Monday morning, the Senate began debate on a bill that is a giant bail-out for an industry that knowingly poisoned hundreds of thousands of Americans - including Charles Sales, 23, of Hot Springs, AR. This bail-out bill would shield manufacturers of asbestos from having to pay for misleading the public about the deadly nature of their product for decades. Tell Congress to oppose the Asbestos Bailout Bill before it is too late.
Charles is suffering from mesothelioma, a fatal cancer caused only by asbestos. A non-smoker and in excellent health before his diagnosis, Charles and his wife, who have a two year-old daughter, planned on expanding their family. His wife will soon be a widow though, as most victims don't live longer than twelve months after their diagnosis.
Charles' father and grandfather, employed at the lumber mill where he would eventually also work, carried asbestos fibers home on their clothing, exposing young Charles to this deadly product. Charles himself did nothing to contribute to this disease - yet he is paying the ultimate price for the irresponsibility of the asbestos industry.
The asbestos companies put people at risk, even long after they knew that asbestos caused cancer and other diseases. They knowingly poisoned people and covered it up. Now, they've come to Congress looking for a bailout that would leave some victims without enough money to cover their medical costs and could potentially leave the American taxpayers with as much as a hundred-billion-dollar tab.
Now unemployed, Charles and his wife have had to file for bankruptcy as a result of his medical bills, which have already exceeded $500,000. Under the asbestos bail out bill, Charles will not be permitted to take his case to court but will be forced to start the claims process all over again from the beginning - wasting time he and his family don't have.
Do we really want to deny the legal rights of millions of people all so we can give negligent companies a free ride?
The F.A.I.R Act may come to a vote any day. Please urge your senators to reject this legislation that re-victimizes those who are already suffering from the devastating financial and health consequences of asbestos poisoning.http://go.care2.com/e/Ipg/hz/Eh0p
