The Wind Cries Mary May 10, 2005 2:30 PM

After all the jacks are in their boxes,
and the clowns have all gone to bed,
you can hear happiness staggering on down the street,
footprints dress in red.

And the wind whispers Mary.

A broom is drearily sweeping
up the broken pieces of yesterday's life.
Somewhere a Queen is weeping,
somewhere a King has no wife.

And the wind it cries Mary.

The traffic lights they turn blue tomorrow
And shine their emptiness down on my bed,
The tiny island sags downstream
'Cos the life that they lived is dead.

And the wind screams Mary.

Will the wind ever remember
The names it has blown in the past,
And with this crutch, its old age and its wisdom
It whispers, "No, this will be the last."

And The Wind Cries Mary.

Kathy Etchingham first met Jimi (when he was a complete unknown, BTW) at the Scotch of St. James club, London, on his first day in  England in 1966. Their relationship spanned the remaining
years of his life. She was as close as any woman ever came to
being Jimi's 'mate' or 'life partner' or  'common law spouse': Jimi loved her dearly. She was the inspiration for Jimi's haunting 'The Wind Cries Mary' (her middle name is Mary and Jimi sometimes used this as a pet name), composed in a flat in Montague Square they shared in London; later they shared a flat in Brook Street now enshrined with a coveted 'Blue Plaque' in Jimi's honor.               [ send green star]
