Newbie here! January 07, 2006 6:39 PM

Hello everyone! I'm a newbie as of 3:30am-ish this morning. Insomnia helped me find this Care2 site and I love it beyond belief. This was the first group I joined and I apologize for being so late in intro-ing myself. I have 10 dogs...all rescues with two being pit bulls (well, one female APBT and one male pit/rott cross) the darlings of my eyes! I also have four long-haired dachshunds (on a dachsie board and may start one here, done't know yet), three mixes of various sorts and one new-ish masiff who came to me as a severe abuse case from a neighbor after other neighbors confronted the "owners." Maia is safe here and is learning to trust again. All of my dogs have behavioral or medical conditions that would find them dead if not in my home where they are treated with the love and care they should have every day. I am a trainer speciallizing in aggressive and severely behaviorally-challenged dogs so that they might stay in their home or become more adoptable. And my name is mary and I live in Ohio. Nice to meet you all and I shall post as often as I can.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Hi October 03, 2006 11:32 PM

Hi, I'm new, don't have any dogs, yet, but I love them : ) I am very pasionate about this cause, I had a terable expierence last year that nearly broke my heart I had a pure bred, siberian husky, he as 8 months old at the time, he was housebroken, sat, stayed, came, and we were working on rolling over This dog was my 3rd baby, I loved, and still love, him with all my heart, my children we 3 and >1 at the time, and they wrestled, walked, and fed him out of the palm of their hands, my cousins corgie could take his bone right out of his mouth and he would cry until we got it back (mind you even at 8 months he was more than twice the other dogs size) K, having said that, we lost our home, and could not find a sutable environment for him, so I took him to the MSPCA, they did a test on him, and when I called to see how he was they told me he was scedualed to be put down, because of food agrasion! I told them that was impossable, Sergent (the husky) was anything but aggressive, I told them about my chirldren and the other smaller dog, I told them how easily he was trained, what an exceptional dog he was, and being a pure breed puppy how easily he could be placed None of this mattered, he was to be put down I demanded he come home with me, and was given all h$$l when I went in to pick him up, they told me he was a vicious dog, and I was putting people in danger Know how they tested him? They left him in a cage for 3 whole days, my dog, who was part of a giant family, wth doting parents, loving "brothers" and had his "doggie" days at the park every single Sunday was left alone, with no contact for 72 hours! and than they fed him food, and poke at him with a rubber hand, a RUBBER hand, and he put it in his mouth, oh no, call the police, we have a vicious dog on the loose! Anyway, can you tell I get emotional, I found a home with a coworker of mine, he now lives with 3 children, 2 parents, including an at home mommy for him : ) he lives on an acre of land, right next to the doggie park, and a beach, he just finished his 3rd grade of doggie school, isn't that cute? and is a year and a half So mine and Sergents,is a happy ending, except for the fact I miss my baby every day, but I shudder to think, how many wonderful puppys mistook that rubber hand as a toy, and thus were put to death : ( Thats my story, looking foward to learning all of yours  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Hi everybody! October 04, 2006 11:38 PM

Hi everyone! My name is Ellen and I'm from Long Island, NY. I adopted my dog in February 2006 from a rescue group. Her name is CookieMonster and she's in my avatar. She has become the light in my life and I never knew that I had so much love for dogs until I adopted her.She is a 9 month old pointer mix. Fighting for the rights of animals has become a passion of mine. It's nice to belong to a place like this where we share the same feelings.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Hi to all October 06, 2006 10:21 AM

Hi! My name is Lisa and I am the proud parent of 2 wonderful Pits. I think that the Pitbull breed are the smartest, most loveable, loyal dogs you could ever have and the world would be a very sad place if they were not here anymore. But something does need to be done about all of the irresponsible owners and breeders. I think they should make people pass a test b4 they can have a pet!!! Breeders should have to meet high standards and people that abuse animals definately need jail time and lots of mental help!!! Anyway...I am glad to be in the group.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Hi All January 20, 2007 8:31 AM

I am a proud owner of an American Pitbull I adopted Meisha in July of 06...she's a big baby and a clown too...she's my shadow as well...in the four short months that I've had her has enriched my life so much...God placed her at the shelter for me to find her...and I am so blessed to have her...shame on all of those who think that Pitbulls are vicious....people need to realize its the human who make them vicious...and its not just Pitbulls who are vicious...all breeds can be...if mistreated....don't punish the breed...punish the human(s).  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Hi, everyone. I have two dogs, both rescue. January 20, 2007 8:31 AM

There're both tiny Brussels Griffons, a very rare breed, but somehow they both fell through the cracks and ended up in rescue. Meneken is 13 and I've had him for four years. His elderly owner died and he escaped euthanasia twice before he found me. I called about a cocker who was looking for a home, but he'd been placed, and this really amazing person in rescue, who has become my good friend, told me that she knew of another little dog that was in real trouble. The guy who adopted him didn't want to keep him (he has some issues with men) and was threatening to have him euthanized. So I adopted him and we've been inseparable ever since. I lost my sweet little Sara (a terrier mix who was found as a stray and was scheduled to be gassed before she found her way to a rescue group via the doggy "underground railroad") last spring and I wasn't sure that I could do it again. I adopt older animals, so have lost several. But a vet tech who used to work for my vet contacted me about a Brussels Griffon puppy she was helping to foster because she remembered Meneken. He's a "pet shop dog" who couldn't be sold because wasn't perfect. He has a tiny hernia that can be easily repaired when he's neutered. He was irrisistible, so now I have two again. He does try my patience sometimes, though, LOL, since I'm not used to puppies. His name is Jack and he's seven months old. My guys seem to find me.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

anonymous Hello January 20, 2007 8:32 AM

Thank you for providing such an important forum to share ideas. I am from Alberta, Canada and own four Rotties (my babies), 1 pomeranian/chihuahua X (she bosses the rotts around), three cats (outdoor but very spoiled), and 1 Grey Parrot (who answers all my questions for me ... and always the right answer too!). I grew up on a farm and have stayed with the acreage life to accomodate my love of animals. Rottweilers are a targeted breed because many people get into owning them for security purposes but fail to give the dogs proper care, obedience and love that they require. And, as I feel about any large dog, supervision is required around small children. The best-trained dog may not bite, but it can knock the child down and cause serious injury without intention to. I have a suggestion to communities that are considering bans. Instead of bans, require owners of targeted breeds to participate in obedience training courses and do property checks to be sure owners are providing secure measures to protect the public with proper fencing and proper care of the animals. A sad fact that occurs with these breeds is that those that attack are often abused, hungry, neglected and untrained. They are often not supervised and allowed to run the neighborhood. It is completely unfair to owners who take all precautions and love and fully care for their animals. I am sure that most owners who love their dogs will do whatever it takes (within reason) to alleviate public fear and paranoia about these intelligent animals. The communities need to return the favor though ... increase penalties on people who abuse animals. Severe animal abuse needs to be dealt with severely because abusers often start on animals and then turn that abuse onto humans. These people need to serve time in jail for torturing a defenseless creature and they need intensive psychiatric couseling - because anybody who would drag a dog behind a moving vehicle, use a beloved family pet for a football or skin an animal alive MUST be either murderously sadistic or insane! Until changes are made these horrible occurances will keep going on. Owners like us can't wait for our communites to do something, because banning is their only solution to date. We need to show our communites that these are issues that are just as important to us and we need to work together for a fair solution. Thank you for reading my sleepless night ramblings.  [report anonymous abuse]  [ accepted]

Hello January 20, 2007 8:32 AM

Is anyone out there? I don't see any postings on this group, and I just joined a few days ago. I have 8 dogs of which 4 are Huskies and various others including a Rottweiler mixed, a Sherman Shepperd mixed, a Wolf-Hybrid and a pitbull mixed. One of the Huskies also has wolf. Most of these have been rescued. I have been rescuing dogs for over 9 years now. I hope to meet most of you. JOSE...  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Hello I am new to this group! January 20, 2007 8:33 AM

Hello everyone.I am new to this group. My name is Lisbeth and I am the very fortunate owner of two sighthounds. One blue and white whippet boy named Mike and one rescued ex-racing greyhound named Connor wich is old gaelic and means victory.Connors story began with the death of my nine month old whippet puppy named Alex.He had been diagnosed with an inoperabel cerebral tumor. The only thing i could do for Alex was to let him go with love. This happend two years ago today.I still miss Alex an awful lot however knowing that I had done everything in my power to help him was a great healer. The fact that I decided to find a worthy greyhound to adopt gave me something to look forward to wich helped me through the deep grief that I felt when Alex died. His gift to me and Mike my other whippet was/is love.So by adopting Connor that gift lives on in him and for them both. This means that the memory of Alex and his gift of love will always remain with the ones of us he left behind. Lots of love and Light from Lisbeth Mike whippet and Connor the rescued ex-racing greyhound who is a deeply loved family member just as much as Mike.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Hi There.! January 20, 2007 8:34 AM

Hi there everyone.I am new to this group.I love animals of all shapes and sizes. However I am particularly fond of sighthounds.I have one whippet and one ex-racing greyhound who was rescued from very bad circumstances.Today Connor is through his detraining periode and doing realy well.Mike my whippet welcomed him to our house with an open mind and so much love that it brought tears of sheer joy to my eyes.My two lads are the light of my life.Living without them is inconcievebel.I get fairly upset knowing how manny greyhounds are destroyed every year just because they are not fast enough to own their so called owners a lot of money.Manny die a horrid death before they reach the age of three.I diden`t know about this going on before I adopted Connor. Now that I do know I try to do everything in my power to help rescue as manny galgoes and greyhounds as I possibilly can.I have my own organisation where I work hard to spread the news about the way greyhounds are treated and I urge people to not fratenise with the racing industry. Please refrain from betting on the greyhounds please don`t watch the races. If people stop going to the races and stop betting on the greyhounds the industry will have to pack it in.In this way fewer greyhounds will be born to race for their lives and fewer of them will be forced to live in demeaning conditions. The number of greyhounds destroyed every year is staggering.about 40.000 greyhounds are killed in the US every year aproximatly the same number of greyhounds are destroyed in the UK and Ireland.Should any of you want any more information about these goings on I can recomend the following websites. www.greyhoundaction.org.uk and www.scoobymedina.com . Lots of love and light to you all from Lisbeth Mike whippet and Connor the rescued ex-racing greyhound.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Hello, is anyone home? July 21, 2007 12:04 PM

You sure are a quiet group! Hi ya everyone, I must have signed a petition or something that brought me to this group sometime back. With all of the groups that I got into suddenly, I haven't been a very good group member with this one, and I apologize. I recognize some of the names from other places but some, not at all. With this being a dog oriented group, you maybe interested in the petition regarding the Chinese food killings: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/238967338 I would be happy to hear from any of you that are still here if you'd like to get in touch with me. My animal situation just took a big upward turn when a friend asked me if I would take her dog for her. She had suffered a heart attack and wouldn't be able to take care of him. She could no longer take him out or walk him because of the physical requirements that it put on her body. My last dogs were shep/husky mixes, A.J and Alexandra. They were full blood sisters 5 years apart in age but identical to the eye. They were also lost to me 5 years apart at the same age of 14. I had them in my life for a total of 19 years. They had a disease that caused them to lose the feeling in their backs. It is progressive and not curable and I do not remember the name of it. The vet. said that it could have been slowed down in its progression if it had been caught in its earlier stages! I was totally furious at that remark as I had questioned every vet. from that office about the back problems I thought A.J had been having. Everytime I was told, "Well, you know she is getting up there in age, shes a pretty old girl!" The vet. that I was talking to was a recent grad. from Cornell and explained that the actual truth about the disorder had only recently been discovered and the other vets. wouldn't have known about it, nobody did until her grad. class learned about it as it happened. Since it was so new, she couldn't tell me anything about it being hereditary because there was no knowledge available yet. Five years later, I could have told her that at least for my sisters, it was hereditary! Alex didn't really show symtems long before it was too bad to be helped so I lost her to the same condition that had taken A.J. Both of my girls were white and drop dead gorgous! The dog my friend called about is male and has lab. ears, but other wise, looks just like the girls! So now I have 4 cats and a beautiful white dog who was called "Boo!" I stsrted calling him "Doobie" for some reason I'm not sure of, right away and he responds so well to it that it is rapidly becoming his name! I'm glad cuz I think "Boo" is a great name for a cat/kitten, or a ghost, but not a dog! Well, it was nice reading about your animals and what brought you here. I sincerely hope you are all still with care2 as it is a good place to be with good people for the most part. Light and love to you all........  [ send green star]  [ accepted]
