Vivian A. Letter to zoo director Monday, 6:11 AM This is my letter to the zoo director. Feel free to use it & change it for yourself. I'm working on a letter for the mayor and other officials, and will post it as soon as it's done. Vivian
Dear Mr. Bojovik:
I am writing in regard to conditions present in the Belgrade City Zoo, which have recently been brought to my attention. The eyewitness accounts I have heard, along with many photographs, are of animals in stark surroundings, without a hint of the elements that would be found in their natural environment. The animals show distinct signs of distress, boredom, anxiety, and in some cases, illness. In sharp contrast to this depressing view are the clean, groomed, and tree-lined walks provided for zoo patrons. It is a cruel injustice that the creatures on display can only observe the type of scenery of which they should be a part. And what do the visitors see? I fear to speculate. There is simply no excuse for the disgraceful way the animals in your zoo are being treated. It is apparent that your priorities have little to do with the welfare of the animals in your care, and more to do with landscaping. I, along with other concerned citizens and animal activists worldwide, will work to bring the Belgrade City Zoo under the spotlight of attention until conditions have changed for the better. I sincerely hope that you, as zoo director, focus your attention on making the zoo a place to be proud of, instead of the magnet for bad publicity it will surely become, barring comprehensive change.

Mr. Nenad Bogdanović Mayor of Belgrade Dragoslava Jovanovica 2, 3229-678 Beograd, SERBIA
Dear Mr. Bogdanovic:
I am writing in regard to adverse conditions present in the Belgrade City Zoo. I have seen a great number of photographs of the zoo, and have heard eyewitness accounts of the state of the animals. The enclosures in which the animals are housed are substandard, by any measure of decency. Instead of attempting to mimic the natural surroundings of each animal, bare cages, cement, and dirt are all that can be seen. In contrast, the areas and walkways for visitors that surround these enclosures are green, well maintained, and pleasant. The animals have no stimulation, many have no companionship of their own kind, and all are obviously bored, anxious, and in distress. This is not surprising, as any living creature would suffer similarly under completely unnatural circumstances.
I am not alone in my concern. Word of the zoos terrible state of affairs is spreading rapidly, and a growing number of citizens and animal activists worldwide are outraged by this situation. In addition, we will actively encourage a total boycott of Belgrade until positive change is instituted. The publicity generated by this campaign will undoubtedly reflect negatively on the city of Belgrade.
I am hopeful that, as the Mayor of Belgrade, you will initiate a serious investigation of the problems presented above, and work to make the Belgrade City Zoo a vacation destination, instead of a place to be avoided. I will appreciate your keeping me informed of any progress in this matter.
Sincerely,

Gentlemen:
My family and I had been planning an extended visit to Belgrade to visit friends, and to tour their lovely city. Unfortunately, we have had to cancel our plans indefinitely because of news we heard concerning the Belgrade City Zoo.
Photographs of the animals and zoo grounds confirm the neglect and abuse that has obviously been going on for years. The animals in this zoo live in bare enclosures, and show obvious signs of distress and illness. How can visitors stroll along the beautifully groomed walkways and look upon such misery? If these animals are to be in captivity, they deserve to be in enclosures that reflect their natural environment, and to be with others of their species. The operation of the Belgrade City Zoo must be investigated, and steps taken to provide proper care of the animals. If there are insufficient funds or resources to make the necessary changes, the zoo should be closed and the animals sent to sanctuaries.
The type of cruelty evidenced in the Belgrade City Zoo has caused me to question the merits of your country, and so my family and I will not be visiting Serbia as planned. I also will advise my friends and associates to boycott Serbia until the zoo has been investigated, and improvements made.
It is unfortunate that a country so rich in culture, beauty, and history, is also a party to such a disgraceful situation. I sincerely hope that changes will be made so that I may visit my friends, and the city we have heard so much about.
