We are petitioning the Screen Actors Guild, demanding that they sever their ties to, and funding of, American Humane.
An outgrowth of our campaign to Boycott Flicka, this effort will be waged to members of SAG, which authorizes American Humane to monitor animals in film and television. SAG's pension fund gives AHA over a million dollars annually! Unfortunately for the animals, AHA has become a bloated, contented, well-fed bureaucracy whose officers and staff are well paid and too timid to fight.
AHA representatives were on the set of Fox Film's Flicka and signed off on an irresponsible and dangerous wild horse race which caused the death of a horse before my eyes! When I confronted them why they permitted such an outrageous scene, they replied that it wasn't abuse of the horses because it wasn't illegal!
The story was reported in the LA Daily News. A day later, Dana Bartholomew, the Daily News reporter, learned that another horse had been killed on a Flicka set two weeks earlier. In the middle of the night before his story was to run, American Humane issued a press release to the wire services absolving Fox of any culpability.
American Humane continues to run interference for Fox. In a telephone conversation with Marie Wheatley, president of American Humane, she told me that the scene wasn't a wild horse race, that the horses were not supposed to break away from their handlers, and that what I witnessed was merely an accident! But Fox had boom cameras all around the ring to film the horses running loose and terrified!
And the horse's death was an accident like a demolition derby is an accident!
