German Phrases August 30, 2005 11:17 AM

Hi

Is it possible that members who are good in German, to start a thread of single sentence/phrase leading to a conversation. I will help the beginners to learn the spoken language.

Thanks

Hi Heather, you're close! They are:

"Sprechen Sie langsamer, bitte"

"Ich liebe dich"

I too have really wanted to learn how to speak German.  After having our son in 97' I went and checked out tapes to try and teach myself by listening over and over when the baby would be napping.  I just fell out of the habit of listening to them, and had nobody to speak it with....kinda made it seem pointless.  My grandmother is from Germany and I remember her from when I was a little girl, she would speak German and try to teach me how to say things.  Always thought that was so cool!  She taught me "I love you".  [ send green star]

That's awesome Heather!  That's how I started too... listening to tapes and CDs, etc.  But on those things the people talk sooo fast and I had no idea why they pronounced certain words the way they did and I got highly frustrated.

That's when I started looking into some of the community colleges in my area for continuing education classes on German.  So I ended up taking German 1 and German 2 and that helped me a lot!  I just need to be sure I practice on my own and listen to my CDs.  Also I keep in touch with some of my classmates and we try to meet up at local German restaurants and festivals.  I plan on taking the courses over again next summer as a refresher.

Hallo! March 27, 2008 10:23 PM

Douglas, remember numbers are the "wrong" way round in german.

Trick Question April 01, 2008 3:45 AM

Was ist der Unterschied zwischen...

Ich bin Berliner.

Ich bin ein Berliner.

(I believe it was Kennedy who made this faux pas while expressing his solidarity with West Berliners at the height of the Cold War).
