Hi Helena ~
That's a nice idea - i'm a native speaker of german currently residing in the Netherlands, but on the move to the US. If you like, we could chat occasionally on yahoo or other (i would have to install msn). So, yeah if you want, just drop me a line - and everyone else too.
Where in Finland are you living if i may ask?
Take care
Peter
Hello from a new member September 15, 2008 1:41 AM
I am Helena from Finland. I was born in Germany but my parents divorced and I came to Finland with my mother. I was then only one years old. I have studyid german at school, but it has been too long time ago, I am totally out now. I would like to lean german again and bettter than it was, is it possible for some to use msn messenger so that we might could hear each others?
Anyway, it will be much more comfortable to stude german with other people, not only alone with a grammar book.
Hey everybody! Ein schoenes neues Jahr! (Happy New Year! - instead of umlauts i'm writing an "e" after the corresponding vowel.) Since i'm sitting here with my morning cup of coffee , i'd like to say Guten Morgen (Good morning!) to all of you! But probably some of you are going to beds now... so Gute Nacht! (Good night!) And to those who are already asleep... Suesse Traeume! (Sweet dreams!) Be safe - macht es gut... Peter

Hallo :) January 05, 2008 3:45 PM
Hallo zusammen. Ich heisse Sanne und bin neu bei care2. Ich bin Deutsche und lebe in Deutschland ,darf ich mich euch anschliessen?

Thanks for the invitation, Louise. I'd love to learn German. I just learned recently that I am not only English and French, but also German in descent - my son who is now 24 has always been interested in learning German. He didn't understand why I wanted him to learn Spanish - of course in TX that's the "other" language. Maybe he knew he was German. Anyway, I've had Spanish and French, but never German, and reading some of this I'm afraid I won't be able to start from nowhere and learn quickly enough but I'll try for awhile and see. I'd love to go there, too. I have been to England and France, but not Germany. We traced my ancestry back to some King Manieq in the 1100s or before and Chaucer in England. Cool....I don't even know enough to say good nite. Guden Nitche....a guess..sorry,

Hello Everyone December 19, 2007 9:26 AM
I studied German in college, that was a long time ago.
I want to familiarize myself with German. I'm glad to be a member.
Hi! Just found this group. I've taken two semesters of intensive German, which is basically two years' worth of German. I'd really like to get practice, since I really enjoy the language! Ich hoffe, dass meine Sprache besser wurden! Tschüss!

Hi August 12, 2007 7:12 PM
Hi everyone!
I just found this site and was so happy! I have been trying to teach myself German for a few years. Although I know quite a few words, I have trouble with sentences, etc.
The majority of my family is of German ancestory, and I am an avid geneologist, so learning the language would obviously be helpful. Although quite a few people in my family know German, they don't remember most of it, which includes my dad who lived there for three years. So here I am.
I think I actually over think things, and I let the fact that there is a high-German, low-German, Swiss-German, etc. get to me.
Hey i just scanned through the contributions here (right after having joined this group) and i really love it! I'm a german linguist (and native speaker) - it's amazing to see so many people interested in german. So if i may say: ich freue mich hier zu sein! Schöne Grüße aus Bielefeld: Peter

I found this group pretty recently, but have just got around to saying anything.
I started teaching myself German a few years ago and really enjoyed it. I took a couple of community classes, until they stopped doing it, but I'm very rusty even on that much. It's a language I really want to learn though.
Hallo I'm new here and kind of ashamed all my mother side of the family are germans and I understand simple conversations and just talk some words and frases .... and mostly swabian dialect
Jeffery, Das ist nur so ein Sagen. Wir Kinder haben immer so herum gespielt mit Wörter. Genau so als "hallo, hallo, wer sitzt am Kloh, die alte Hex m'im Radio".

I just stumbled across this group and thought I'd join. If I can help in any way, let me know. I have lived in Germany on several occasions and done business there in the local language for over thirty years. When in Germany, I am rarely taken for an American.

Hah! Try a Texas accent! I'm from Dallas, and half of the folks in German 1 were sounding pretty hick! When you get the pronunciation down that is basically "the accent", if that makes sense.
Thanks for the welcome! September 25, 2005 1:18 PM
Thanks KJ! I'll definatly pass along an tricks to picking up the language I may learn. I'm sure it's going to be a LONG endeavor for me -- can't you just hear German being spoken with a West Virginia accent?? LOL Is a local accent hard to shake when you learn a new language?

Hi Scott, welcome to the group! Classes are the best way to go to learn German, I think.... (aside from spending time in German speaking countries). Let us know how they are going and feel free to post any tips you come across in your class. I recently finished German 2 in August and really enjoyed my classes!

Hello everyone! I just stumbled into the group, and look forward to learning German with/from you all. I begin taking formal classes in German at the end of October.

Hi everyone! Yes, okay, I'm rather ashamed that I haven't been here for ages, but I thought I'd pop my head round the door again! How is everyone doing? Has anything happened since I was last here? Is there any news? So, if anyone needs anything to do with German, you can reach me at derekjwilcox@hotmail.com Take care, Lots of love, Derek

Hi I'm Lorelei from Texas. I took German in high school and college, and I kept my books and dictionaries. We go to visit several German towns in Texas yearly, including Gruene, New Braunfels and Fredericksburg, where we indulge ourselves in the local cuisine and of course BIER! I also have a weekend job in a Biergarten, so I have ample opportunity to practice speaking. As we all know, if you do not use a language, it starts to fade away from your memory, so I am hoping to learn a little here as well.

Thanks for the offer Erin, though I wasn't looking for a cohost. I agree with Ina on the whole host topic. We only have 39 members, more than half of which are not even active. I hope that people don't feel like they need to be a host or cohost to jump in and interact with people, because I want everyone to feel comfortable in starting and joining in on topics and throw out ideas to help us all better our German. This is not just my group, but OUR group!
[send green star]
This is just my opinion - maybe KJ and the other members disagree- but the group is supposed to be interactive, isn't it? There is supposed to be a host -not because it's strictly necessary, but because Care2 rules say so- but the members can help just as much by being online and active often, without being cohosts... I haven't seen any messages that need to be deleted or any members that should be banned, and that (deleting messages and banning) is pretty much the only privilege of mods.
Are you in need of a cohost? I would really enjoy being one, and you'll know I'll be around, I have to take 2 more semesters of German after this semster, so I'll be around at least until Dec. of 2006. What do you think? You can say no, that's totally cool, I just liked this group so much, I thought I'd offer if you want another member.
So what language do we use here? Meine Name ist Esther, ich bin Niederländisch aber wohne in die USA. Ich spreche Niederlandländisch, Deutsch, English und ein bißchen Franschözisch.
So I guess I need to translate this???
My name is Esther, I'm Dutch but live in the USA. I speak Dutch, German , English and a bit French.
I would love to use my German again since I hardly ever use it. I used to speak & write German more than English.
Hallo Erin! Glad to see you here! I am currently taking German 1 at the local community college and will be continuing with German 2 next month. Unfortunately they don't go any higher than 2 there... so I'll be on a hunt for the next level after that. We look forward to having you, please feel free to jump in on any of the posts!

Hallo leute! Ich heisse Erin! I have been learning Deutsch since January, and I love it! I couldn't decide which language to take up... I love Russian, but some complicated matters at my University made that impossible. I have taken French, several years of it and I went to France a couple years back. I decided I didn't like it that much anymore. So, I am learning German now. It is beautiful, and a lot more challenging to learn than French. That's what makes it fun! I am taking my second German class this July, then my Third in January, and my last next summer. So, I'll be around to practice, teach, and to learn from all of you. I'll need practice on my cases, though. Deutsch ist so viel spass!
Guten Tag Amin! Hope you enjoy it here... Please feel free to post on existing threads, start your own and jump in on the quizzes going on!

Habe seit längster Zeit mit Dir nich gesprochen. Ich wuste nicht daβ Du Deutsch gelernt haβt. Wenn ich Dir helfen kann muβt Du's mir nur sagen. Ich bin froh daβ Du auch hier bist.
hi all! this is a great idea! i learnt german for a couple of years quite a while back (a decade ago hehehe).. been thinking i should work on it again!
[send green star]
Maybe we could first have a list of words that are the same in English and German and then have everyone write a simple little story using those words. It might be funny and fun. Remember, this is not a graded class. Or is it?
[send green star]
Yeah, im the same as you....little things excite me! The Character Map comes in a lot of handy for foreign language typing!!
I just started this group about 2 weeks ago if even that, so we're still getting things started. Basically I have just been typing up basic information. I'm still trying to come up with a solid game plan on different activities and quizzes we can do to strengthen our German, so I am all for hearing any ideas anyone may have! But for now I need to go to my German class (it's my first day! )
Thanks, not only will I be furthering my German language skills but also my computer language skills. I always saw the character map but did not know what it was for. You made me really happy!!!!! I always get excited over the small things because little things do mean a lot. So, what can I do to help and how are approaching these learning sessions?
[send green star]
Ursula!! I hope you enjoy the group! A lot of what I am posting are the basics, because I am beginner....but if you (or anyone else out there) have more advanced things they would like to post PLEASE feel free!
Also, I don't have a "special computer" but everyone should have a "Character Map" on their computer where you can pull up those letters.
To get to the "Character Map" (which I believe is the same on all computers, but I could be wrong)
Hello, This might just be the place I need to be. This morning called my friend in Austria to wish her a happy birthday. She is starting to forget a lot of English and I am really forgetting so much German that I had a difficult time communicating in all German. I came to the US about 40 years ago as a ten year old so that I only had the language capablities of a ten year old. Since then, have not had anyone with whom to speak German on an ongoing basis. Hope I can be helpful, too. I'm excited about this group.

Hi Dan, glad to have you here! Good luck with German, I'm enjoying my quest very much and I start my class tomorrow at the community college!! I don't know anything about French, but German is very similar to English in many ways, they are both Germanic languages. So that helps out a lot....and once you get the dialect down most German words are pronounced like they look.
you guys!! Feel free to jump into any of the threads you would like, or start your own. If anyone has any good ideas of activities to get everyone involved, please feel free to post it!!

Hello everyone, I just joined this group, thinking it isn't a bad idea to improve my German (it won't be too hard, I don't know it that well, although I started learning years ago). I decided the best way to learn is to make it interesting, so this group was the perfect opportunity.
It's nice meeting you and I hope we can all improve our German

Hello Everyone!! I am glad to be here. I want to learn a couple of different languages, and it just so happens that German is one of them. I can't wait!
Yay! Welcome Stephanie! I was talking to my mom a couple days ago telling her about the German class I start next week at the community college and she was thinking about it and she was shocked that she didn't know any German considering we have a lot of German in our family.
[send green star]
Hey, everyone!! I think my family stopped speaking German with my Great Grandparents. I would love to learn. I am excited to be here!!
[send green star]
everyone!! How exciting! This group has grown considering I just started it a couple days ago! Thanks Michelle for sending out invites!!
Derek, that's great your good at German, I'm sure we will definitely come to you for questions!!
I went to Germany a couple years ago, which is what really sparked my interest to learn the language. We stayed in Switzerland for the most past in the Zürich area where they speak Swiss German, which I'm under the impression it is German with a different dialect, so I think German will come in handy in a few different areas of Europe (Because I plan on visiting a lot! )
I lived in Germany for 3 years, so my German's not at all bad
If anyone wats to know anything, please feel free to use me as a walking reference book I'm very happy to help anyone... perhaps that's why Michelle invited me?
I am here now...Thank you to both KJ and Michelle!!! I got an invite from both of you!! I feel the love LOL. I am excited to be here. I am hoping to at least learn a little something. I do like the German language and am excited to learn

Hi all! glad to meet everyone. I love the German language, and am eager to learn. It seems a little difficult, but I'm willing to try. I do know a few words , but I would love to learn more. I am happy to be part of this group. It seems like a great group to be in. I can't wait to get started. KJO THANKS FOR THE INVITE. Brenda

LOL Michelle, I'm sure your Oma will be thrilled! I will try and always include pronunciation to make it easier for everyone to say. One thing about German is in a lot of cases it's pronounced just like it's looked, so that is good!

Okay, so I have a German background, but don't speak a word of it!!! I was hoping to maybe learn a few things, (or maybe even many things), and surprise my Oma. Good to be here!

Hey Sarah, glad to have you here! I have never taken German classes, I am trying to teach myself, which is very hard, so that's why I signed up for the class at the community college that I start next week. Unfortunately my high school didn't have German classes.
That's also why I started this group. I hope to provide a spot where people interested in the German language can get together and study/learn. I know for myself I hoped that this group can help me stay on track and not give up on my studies.
I'm glad to join your group. I took german for two years in highschool but I dont remember much, I wish I could remember more so hopefully this will help me a little. I use some german phrases in everyday conversations, just like ich auch ( I dont even know if I am spelling it right!) I also (me too). Oh well, its fun to say either way

I was excited to come on this morning and see there are 4 members here, when I got offline yesterday there was just me.
I'm still in the process of posting up some goodies on the board, so be on the lookout for that!
And on another note, I just signed up for a German class at the community college and will hopefully bring some of the knowledge I learn there to this group!
Please feel free to post on any of the threads, start your own, give ideas on how we can work together to learn, or anything!
