Beware of Spay/Neuter Clinics August 29, 2005 12:27 PM

Beware of Spay/Neuter Clinics 10:57 AM

I need to share this with you folks.  I found a spay/neuter clinic that would do my cats for a minimal fee.  I personally couldn't take them, so I had a friend take them for me.  She drove to Houston and dropped them off and oh my goodness, my cats were tortured.  My friend told me this place was in such disarray.  The conditions were deplorable and unsanitary.  They tossed cats around like hamburger meat. I had told the facilitator that my cats weren't feral but strays that I had taken in and domesticated.  Of course the facilitator wasn't there when my friend went and my cats were treated as feral cats.  THEY CLIPPED MY BEAUTIFUL CATS EARS!!!  My husband and I were livid.  I purposely told this lady that they were domesticated cats and they treated them as ferals.  I couldn't believe it.  My friend told me they put the cats right after surgery all over the lobby, no use of sterility of any kind but newspapers on the floor.  The floor was nasty from pee and poop.  This is a strongly supported place by top notch people in Houston, Texas and I want to let the supporters know what it is they are supporting.  My friend said there were signs all over the place for donations of rubbing alcohol.  Can you believe that?

So my reasoning for writing this is folks, do your homework before you trust a low cost spay/neuter.   Ask lots of questions, ask other people.  Please don't make the same mistake I did.

My cats are bouncing back but minus a part of their ear and of course private parts.  I just can't believe that here is another organization that isn't doing this for the love of animals but for money.  Please check into any low cost spay/neuter clinic before you take your animal to a place such as this.

This shouldn't even be done to feral cats!   [ send green star]

What can we do about this? August 29, 2005 12:36 PM

I have posted this in several groups.  I am so livid right now, I can't even think straight.  One lady suggested I contact the BBB and possibly the animal control.  The only problem I see is this organization has been in business for years.  How any one could stand back and let this happen beats me? What can we do as supporter of animals rights do? I need help my friends.

I too agree, feral cats shouldn't even be treated in this manner.

We need a diffferent way too ID s/n ferals... August 29, 2005 12:38 PM

The ear clip was started by one of the major feral s/n groups and has become an "easy" way for rescue TNRs to ID those already done.

We need, IMOHO, to come up with a humane way to ID these cats...

Suggestiions????

Tatoos ?? I wonder what that costs?

Hey Gayle, it was Kindle that took these kitties for me and she was so scared to call me and it wasn't until she got them back to me, that I just ran into my room crying and shouting I was sorry because I felt I had sent my cats off to the slaughterhouse.  I was trying to save a few dollars and I ended up hurting my babies instead.  Kindle never realized what was happening because they were really snobby and rude and sneaky is what I call it.

I blame this organization.  Something must be done.   I agree, why not tatoo them or ear tag them, not cut the ear.  Unbelievable.

That is NOTHING like our clinics. Please dont condem all clinics for your horrible place. Please report them to the department of ag in your area.  [ send green star]

Why did your friend leave them there if it was so bad?

I do not like the tattoos either. We had a rescued greyhound who had her ear tattooed, and you couldn't even touch her ear without her freaking out.

I agree Connie, don't dismiss all clinics as bad. Just be careful. When you go in look around, make sure it looks like a good place. Make sure the animals there are being treated well, make sure the staff is nice and will listen to you.

Gayle, do you want to touch a feral cats ear to read the tatto??? Ear tipping is humane and very easy for people to id the cats already trapped. Otherwise these cats will have to go back under the anesthsia to be checked for a tatto or another way. It is much better for the person to take a peak into the trap, see the tipped ear and release the cat right there.

I have my ferals tipped without any problems.

I mean pin it to the homepage! I will also warn all the people I come in contact with about the possibility of this happening, should they utilize a similar service.

Blessings.

Thank you so much for taking this so seriously.  I understand ear clipping feral cats, but these are my own domesticated house cats.  Thank you Spooky, all I wanted was for people to see what could happen if they didn't research places first.  Just because the price sounds right doesn't make it right.

And to those that mentioned about bad mouthing all clinics, in no way, shape or form would I do that.  I am only targeting this one.  I used to work for vets that S/N feral cats and at least they acted humanely.
