In pictures: Tackling domestic abuse November 11, 2005 7:17 AM

Now, one radio station is encouraging them to fight for their rights. BBC Outlook's Emma Thomas visited the Palabra de Mujer radio station and attended a workshop it organised to educate women. Excerpt on machista (macho) culture: "Pink dress This little girl was transfixed by the woman leading the workshop. The pink and flowery dress she was wearing perfectly reflects the way little girls are brought up to be feminine and submissive in Nicaragua, while boys are brought up thinking that to carry a pistol and use violence makes them a real men. This is the essence of the machista culture which contributes in large degree to the idea that it is acceptable for a man to exercise violence in their role as head of the family."
