LOS ANGELES -- San Diego police will recommend that Riverside's police chief be charged amid allegations he struck his wife when they turn the case over to prosecutors Wednesday.
Police Chief Russ Leach adamantly denies the allegations made by a security guard who told police he saw Leach strike his wife in a San Diego hotel room.
The guard peered through a bathroom window after hearing a woman's scream and says he saw Leach hit his wife, then stomp on her foot.
San Diego police officials say there's enough evidence to charge Leach with misdemeanor battery -- a charge punishable by up to a year in jail.
Leach appeared at a news conference with his wife, Connie, Tuesday and insisted they merely had an argument.
He denied any physical violence and said he'll stay on the job throughout the legal process.
The San Diego city attorney's office says it may take several weeks to determine whether to file charges.
