Electric Billing Help December 20, 2012 3:57 AM

We need to write our US senators and congressman and ask them to do their best to making cuts to states to help out with such things as help in paying utilities shut off and etc that some of us need from time to time.  Sitting back and doing nothing will help our senators and congressman to vote in making these cuts.

Help during 2012 November 30, 2011 5:17 AM

Hello Everyone:

I know that for some of us we go through some very rough and hard times and we need some assistance every now and then.

In 2012 I know that many agency are going to be working with less money then they have been use to because of the Federal Government making huge cuts in what they will give each state to help out with Electric and or Gas service to our residents.  Hopefully the states will kick in a little more to help out as funds become low and request for help is high.  Hopefully those who can afford it will give their electric and gas providers a little extra with each bill to help put funds into these places that offer us assistance when we need it.

Please, if you need help paying your bill, don't wait until the date on your bill for shut off to go looking for that help.  Do it as soon as you get that shut off notice as you may have to go to several agency before finding one that has the funds to help you.

Rachel:

You have 2 options available to you.  First of all, you can call Salvation Army and have them call the Power company to put a hold on it as they can't see you until your appointment date, they should be able to do that.  Also you might want to call some of your local churches to see if they can help you out.  I have always had good luck most the time with getting help from my local churches in times like these.

Once you get past all of this, what I would do is to get a letter from the doctors office stating that there is a need for electric in the home because of a breathing machine, and send that to the electric company.  Most electric companies have programs they can set up with you to help out when you fall behind a little and can set up payment arrangements over a few months billing periods.  It is worth looking into.

Your very welcome November 18, 2009 1:02 PM

Claire:

You are very welcomed.  I am glad I could be of some help to you and so glad to hear that you were able to get the electric turned back on.  Such a shame that all this happened to you in the first place.

You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Thanks Michael November 07, 2009 1:02 PM

first of all, florida and i think hawaii are 2 states that do nothing to help disabled people and the electric bill. they just disconect without concern to that persons disability. second of all, my daughter DID call Progress Energy and tell them she would be responsible for the bill, BUT we did have it transferred to our apartment in her name. She was going to pay the bill for us, becuase she owed us some money for a car we sold her. But then she did not pay the bill. The power company said there was some roomate clause which no one i have spoken to has ever heard of, but they decided to enact it in our case. I still dont see how they could hold him responsible for her bill, even after she called them and told them she was responsible and to start it over in his or my name. So, last weekend I wrote to our congressman Bill Young, who is a wonderful caring man (very rare today). He had helped my fiance back in 2004, after waiting for his disability for over 3 years, even though it was proven, well, he helped get it speeded up a little.  I wrote to him and his office put a complaint in to the public service commision (which I HAD called myself but got no help or suggestions. They contacted Progress Energy which in turn I got a call from a lady in the Executive offices, consumer affairs division. She was pretty helpful. We paid part of the bill, plus another deposit and got it turned back on. It wasnt 1200.00$ but almost 800.00$ which now is going to mean we are going to be behind in our rent. I cant win for losing. But at least the power is on, and I able to get myself together for job interviews. That was impossible with it 90 degrees outside, it was over 100 degrees in our apartment and no warm water. it hurt so bad to take a cold shower, then i had no way to blow dry my hair, (it looks pretty bad if i dont), PLUS there is no way for me to put make up on, if i am sweating. That just does not work. Plus try putting a nice outfit on if you are soaking wet.  you will stink by the time you get somewhere and look like a bag lady. So anyway now hopefully I can find a job pretty soon.  It does help to know that there are people out there that at least care about others. I hope you all have a great day!

Claire:

I feel so sorry for you having this situation happen to you.  The only thing I can think of is to have yourself and your daughter go down to the electric company to tell them the this was your daughters account from another address and that she never at any time lived with you in your current address since you moved into there.  If needed, get a few people to write out a statement saying so also including your current manager and have them notorized.  Tell them that for some reason unknown to you her account was tranfered to you by mistake.  You can also contact your state reps office and tell them this and ask for there help in this matter also.

Also, in some states as long as there is a disabled person living in the household, you can have your power turned on without having to pay a deposit.  You just need a letter from the doctor stating that the person lives in the household and is disabled.

Good luck and keep us posted.  I know these are rough times for most agencies and money is of short supply and this is why they have limits to how much they can pay for you.

disabled fiance. power shut off. cannot charge wheelchair October 23, 2009 10:23 PM

So, I llived at another apartment with my disabled fiance, daughter and grandson. When we moved in there we were shocked when we got our first electric bill of 380.00$. the air cond. would never shut off. We called the apt. complex over and over and they treated us like idiots, and said "oh, its blowin cold air out. it works fine."....so anyway they never fixed it, and our bills would range from 350, to 415.00$ a month. When we finally got out of that hell of a complex, my daughter and GSon moved into a new house, and my fiance and I moved to our own 1 Bedroom apt. Lovely. the air actually comes on and goes off. our bill was 70$. But here is the problem. The electric at our other apartment was in our daughter's name. She had it transferred over to this apartment becuase she owed me some money, and that way i did not need to come up with deposits. Well, she didnt pay it, and now it got cut off. My daughter does not live here. she is not on the lease here. My fiance tried to get the power turned on in his name, but they would not let him. We are responsible for her bill. 1066.00$. We will basically never have that kind of money. I just got laid off from my job 2 weeks ago.  His disability is 800.00 a month, that pays our rent, and some food. It is hot here in florida. His sits here and sweats and stares at the ceiling. I cant charge his wheelchair and get him outside where he might can get cooled off.  I cant bathe him with cold water, it is too painful for people with nerve damage. I cannot feed him properly. He is so hot he is throwing up his medicine. No agency will help us. they have no money, and if they do, they only give 100.00$ or less. I am in a mess, and at the end of my rope. We had already lost everything we owned a few years ago when we were homeless and lost our storage. This has been one nightmare after another since he became disabled in 2001. People keep saying it will get better. it doesnt. it just keeps getting worse. what can i do???? someone please help!

If you really get desperate, you must, repeat must, contact your power companies corporates office, not where you mail your payment to. You will need speak with the person in charge of customer support and planning. Explain your financiacial situation and they will ask you how much you can pay on the 1st of the month and then they will put a hold on your power account so that your power cannot be shut off. But you must pay that amount you agreed to. You will still owe all of the monies but at least you will be able to keep your power on.

The contact person for those in Florida that use FPL for power is Evelyn Sweeting in Miami Corporate Offices and her phone number is:1-305-552-4978.

I have tried all elected officials to no avail, rotten SOB"s so let's vote them all out!

Wish I could give you the numbers for all states but sorry not possible but if you really run into trouble and cannot find the number please email me and I will do my best for you. Blessings to all, Dreama

The heat this year is worse then its been for over 100 years they say, and this has caused so many of us to have to use our AC a whole lot more then we normally would, and causes our electric bills to be out of this world.†† And as Dreama has said about Florida, we have the same problem here in Texas.† Most all agencies are already out of money to help the low income, disabled, elderly people to help pay their high bills and they have no idea when they will have more money available.†† And of course a lot of this is caused because of the severe budget cuts our wonderful federal government put in place in order to help spend that money on giving it to those who want the government to rebuild their homes and businesses free of charge because of them being destroyed in New Orleans during last years Hurricane Katrina.† So we are now seeing the fall out from this, and many of us are having to suffer in the heat, and people are dying all over the USA from heat related illnesses because they can't afford to run their AC units with no one able to help them pay their high bills.

So we must now do our best to help each other by letting each other know how we deal with things and help to keep ourselves as cool as possible, and cut our electric cost as much as possible too.†† As I can almost bet you, things are going to get a whole lot worse before they get any better.†† In the mean time, we must all start writing and calling our elected officials and demand that they allow the states more money to help the elderly, disabled, and all low income people to help pay for their high electric bills.

Thanks again Dreama for your tips.†

Due to so many natural disasters in this country, most all funds to help the disabled, low-income people, and the very poor, funds are very limited, in fact just about non-existent. Here in Florida we are all getting hit with double electric bills, or at least all who have to FPL. They double your bill for fuel costs, outrageous.

I have had to get really creative and will share with all how I now keep my power bills manageable:

1.†I took off A/C vents in rooms we do not use all of the time, closed off the vent and put aluminum foil around the†inside of the vent, and then put it back in place. By doing this, you are just cooling rooms you use a lot and it also forces†the air into those rooms much stronger. Keep the dooors closed to those rooms that you have blocked the vents.

2.† I turn my A/C setting to 84 for at least 4 hours or longer and use electric fans and have all shades and curtains closed. Then I set it back down to 78. My power bill is now cut in half by doing all of this every day.

Bless you all, Dreama

Re: This Is No Joke on How We Are Now Trying to Pay Our Huge Electric Bills

Dear Sirs,

I am enclosing copies of my electric bills and they show that half of all Floridianís bills are for fuel costs. My electric bill for the month of July is $337.53 and of that amount , $160.63 is for your fuel costs. How in the world can we pay this huge amount being on fixed income? I am sure that you all get your big bonuses and perks, and stock portfolios while we are all being plundered and looted by Florida Plunder and Loot. How shameful of you all.

Here is what my 78 year old mother has sunken so low to do to try and pay our electric bills. She is working a prostitution corner in Riviera Beach and she has to accept food stamps and coupons, and sometimes she has to give them change back. These should be her golden years and we are being raped by FPL.

I am disabled, recovering from a major stroke and she is my caregiver, when she is not working the corner, so I have had to get creative myself. On the Island of Palm Beach where all of the wealthy live, there are men walkers for the old women to escort them to society functions. So, I am now going to try becoming a walkette for old geezers on that Isle of Greed. I will have to tell them that I am in a wheelchair, have recovering from a major stroke, and 911 has to be called for me quite often. But desperate times call for desperate measures but all of my medical conditions aside, I can be fun for an old man who is half blind and senile. See how low you have sunken me also with your corporate greed.

My other plan for all in Florida is a good one to get rid of FPL and your huge

Page 2

electric bills and cripple your company and corporate greed. We all set-up tent cities with generators as they are doing in MS, AZ, and CO. And we could all live free from you raping your customers and we do not get pleasure out of it! We are all getting sick and tired of your FPL TV commercial about what you are doing for us all for any future hurricanes. We donít trust you and I am sure you are charging all of us in FPLís customer area for those commercials. All of the Charity agencies are out of monies down here because of these huge electric bills. I have called them all at Governorís Jeb Bushís Aides insistence and help with giving me all of the phone numbers.

I will be circulating this all across a website that I am a member of as a disability advocate that over 5 million members worldwide and will do a petition for Florida and other states suffering the same high electric bills.

Sincerely,

Dreama and Lucy Runyon

Dear Rex:

As promised on your telephone call to me, I am faxing you copies of my high electric bills and you told me that you would send them on to the Public Service Commission for review. Thank you, Rex as you always keep your word and I am most grateful.

I called LIHEAP for assistance for paying one month of my $333.53 electric bill and sadly, with both my mom's Social Security and my Social Security Disability Yearly income , we were $10.00 over the limit to qualify for help. And that has been the same story with all of the agencies that the supervisor at FPL gave to me to call, they have no monies available and all of the Churches have no monies due to all of the Hurricanes. God, please pray for us all†in Florida.

I go today to have an MRI at 4pm as my neuro-surgeon suspects that I have a blood clot in my brain. I really am ready to leave this evil, uncaring, and ugly world, Rex. I am at peace with the Lord and it would be a blessed release.

I feel so lost and alone and know I have to fight this wrong that is being down to millions of people in Florida.

Hello Everyone:

I got this information this evening from my senator weekly newsletter he puts out.† In this weeks installment he gave the following good information.

This week, the House voted on a bill to make heating and cooling cost grants available to low income households this fiscal year (FY06). S. 2320 will make $1 billion dollars in FY 2007 Low Income Heating assistance Program (LIHEAP) funds available for use a year ealier.† Of this amount, $500 million would be allocated to LIHEAP's Basic State Grant formula program and the remaining $500 million would be held for LIHEAP's Contingency Grants to be released at the discreation of the President.

While many in the northeastern part of the country use this funding for home heating cost, Texans are able to get help with their cooling cost this summer.† An additional $500 million in formula funding would guarantee texas an additional $38.3 million for FY 2006- nearly doubling the State's existing $44.1 million dollar grant.† This would allow LIHEAP to reach 46,500 additional disabled and low income households in Texas this year.

Congress estabilished LIHEAP in the early 1980s, following a period of several sharp energy price increases.† LIHEAP makes grants to states, which distribute the aid that provides cooling as well as heating assistance to the disabled and low income households in every state of the United States.

For those that are not sure where to go to get assistance in help in paying your electric bill, you can look in your phone book under state government, look for the LIHEAP department.† You can call them and they will tell you what agency in your area recieve their funding to help pay these bills for you.† Most states only help those who are disabled and or living in a low income household who have recieved a shut off notice, but some states and agency do not require a shut off notice before they will pay the bill for you, so look into how the agencies in your area work so you can get the needed help when needed.

Hello Everyone.

Update for you.† I am not sure if TXU has done this on those accounts who were formally getting the Lite-up Texas discount before it ended last year or not.† About 2 months ago TXU started giving a low income discount on their monthly bill.† Both of mine have been an average of $14.00 a month.† If you are not getting this low income discount on your monthly bill, and the bill is in your name, then you might want to call TXU and ask them about getting the low income credit on your electric bill.† They may have forms that you might have to fill out.† I know I didn't, it just started appearing on my bill, but I was getting the lite-up Texas credit before the state ended that program, so sure my name was on their records from that.

Blue Berry M.† No, I have not had much luck with TXU either.† They gave me that number also, but its the wrong number.† Plus they gave me the number to Community Services who handles most of the enegry assistance help for my county.

Another thing you can try is to write or call the LIHEAP Program of Texas, and they can give you information on assistance programs that are available in your county.† The contact persons name is Ms. Peggy Colvin.† Mailing address is:

Ms Peggy Covin, Energy Assistance Section, Texas Department of Housing & Community Affairs, PO Box 13941, Austin Texas, 78711-3941

Phone number is (512) 475-3864

Email address:† PColvin@tdhca.state.tx.us

Check out their web site at www.tdhca.state.tx.us/ea.html

Hopefully they can let you know what is available in your area to help out now that the Lite-Up Texas program went broke.

Anyone else who lives in Texas can contact these folks also to find out where assistance for your energy bills is available in your area.

I agree Nanette September 03, 2005 1:15 AM

I agree Nanette.† 3 % sure isn't much, but it is at least something.† I wish all states would have a program in place to give those on low incomes some type of a break on their monthly bills, plus better programs to help those who are due for shut offs because of not being able to pay their full bills.† I know here in Texas, if you have not had a disconnect notice in the past 12 months, they will do a deffered payment plan so you can pay the bill out over 3 months with the rest of your monthly bill, but if you have had more then 1 disconnect notice in a 12 month period, they will not help you in any way shape or form, and this is just not right.†† We need better programs to help the disabled out on their monthly utility bills, including, electric, gas, water, phone so these folks can get help when needed and never have to worry about being turned off as long as they show they are trying their hardest to pay what they can each month.

The program in NC September 02, 2005 2:20 PM

In NC Duke Power has an automatic program where anyone on a disablity gets some taken off their bill.† I believe it's 3%.† It's not much, I know, but it's something.† Also, they have a policy of trying not to cut off power from the disabled, though, in the end if you can't pay they will cut you off.  [ send green star]

Help Needed August 17, 2005 1:02 PM

Hello Everyone:

If you live in Texas, we could really use your help on this.† As thoughs of you who were on the Texas Lite-Up program may have received a noticed in the last day or two, the state is discontinuing this program effected your August bills because of the lack of funding.

We need to write to our state senators and represenatives and let them know that we need this program, and many depend on its savings because our only source of income is either SSDI or SSI.† We need the state to give the needed funding to the program and get it restarted for us.† But we can't do this alone, so please also write to your friends and family members who also live in Texas and have them write also to get this needed program back up and running again.

What type of programs do your state offer July 07, 2005 8:38 PM

If you know of any program that your state may offer to help those who are disabled or living on a limited income, feel free to post it here so others in your state who may not know about its program can get the needed help they need.

Also if your state doesn't have any programs like they do here in Texas with the LiteUp Texas program.† If you live in or around a large city, and you know of any organization that helps out with paying disconnect notices on electric service, you can also post that information here also.† All I would ask is if you post any phone numbers to use to contact organizations at, please make sure that it is a correct number for that organization before posting it so people won't be calling a non working number or another business or residences.†† Hopefully this way we can get the needed information to help others who need this type of assistance.

Electric Billing Help June 14, 2005 8:11 PM

I am not sure how other states help out the disabled and people living on a limited income, but here in Texas, there is a program called "Lite up Texas". This state program gives the disabled and those on limited incomes 10 percent off their monthly electric bills. You can call your local electric provider for an application to be sent to you. If you live outside of Texas, you might want to call your electric company and see if they offer such a program in your state. I know 10 percent is not much, but every little bit does help, especailly during the long hot summers. Michael  [ send green star]
