I just read about cats with 6 toes about a month ago.  They are called Hemingways.  Ernest Hemingway, apparently, was given a six-toed cat, and as cats do, it multiplied...A LOT!  Supposedly, any six-toed cats are assumed to be descendants of this cat.  This was an article in a magazine, mind you, so I don't know how true it all is.

Thank you to everyone who posted photos! Such a beautiful breed. At 21 lbs, I thought that my cat (who is part Rag Doll - part Butterscotch Tabby) was big - until I saw my brother's gorgeous Maine Coon, Leo. I was overwhelmed by both his size and beauty. He is tremendous - with huge paws and long, thick fur.

This is my Maine Coon kitten, Damien (aka the Omen Child) at 5 weeks.  He is now six months old and weighs 11 pounds.  He's one very precious and spoiled baby.
He has an absolute fascination for boxes and baskets.  He curls up and sleeps in them - the smaller the better.  It's hilarious to watch this enormous cat curl into a ball inside a flower pot for a nap.

Misty decided today was cuddle your human day. I was on the computer with a pillow on my lap, it's chilly here and thats my habit, so she jumped up and stayed there for atleast an hour. She fell asleep after she purred forever. Smokey also decided humans are good... she follows me around meowing now just like the other two. Cheyenne is just as loveable as ever now... they decided my homecoming dress is a new toy because it has a small train..... they like it...

But Merlin is my silly boy...he's skiddish as all get out, but the biggest lover boy when the weather gets cold.    He's a classic brown tabby, with huge green eyes.  But I've also learned to be very careful picking him up, as he's given me a 4 inch scar on my hand and wrise from seeing an air molecule move and freaking on me...all back claws.  The door bell rings, and he takes off like his tail is on fire.  He's 6 now.  About 14 pounds.  Love him to death, and would never give him up for anything.    Besides, the female rescue kitty I have (Lovey) would be lonely without him to fight with.    Sleep?  Huh?  *L*

Curtis

I'll post a pic later...do not have one on this computer at work.  Curtis was a rescue, found him during a cold, wet Thanksgiving at a nursing home.  He was probably 3-4 months old when I found him.  He was shockingly skinny and had a major cut lip from eating out of cans (still his fav snack-but with supervision).  You could see his knees, ribs and hips clearly...that is how skinny he was.He was the UGLIEST thing I ever brought home.

It has been 6 years since that day.  Curtis now weighs in at 28 pounds.  Vet says he is healthy and I know he is happy.  He spends teh day in the fenced back yard.  Too big to climb the fence and has never really jumped anywhere.  Curtis is my giant loveable ball of fur.  He gets the right side of my bed...Tribble (my Chihuahua) and I share the Left.  I wouldn't have it any other way.

darn it i cant put a picture in here but i do have an album..I was told my scar who is a year old this month was noregian forest cat but after reading all of the info and looking at the different pics of main coons i believe he is one of this breed..he is a black and white..is bigger then my other cats..and has a very tiny soft meow when he does talk..i havent heard any chirping like what i read in here, but when he wants attention from me he will takl to me..This summer he did do some hunting and brought me a few gifts as well..he brought a grasshopper which he ended up eating after i freaked out..then two or three other times he brought in small crab apples..LOL..have no idea what that was about but he played with them then i ended up throwing them away..Then his last one was awhile i was at work and my youngest daughter was home and Scar brought in a huge dragon fly and Amy said she yelled at him and he dropped it so she put it outside and it flew off..LOL..He isnt one for being held or such but he will lay next to me or any of the family  members..he has a buddy in my other young cat she is a pure calico and they just love each other it is cute..anyway he is unique by far..

OK, in case you didn't know -- I WORSHIP Maine Coons.  There is NO better cat in the universe.  My Mushy was a Maine Coon, and she (and all other Maine Coons) are a dream.  They are soft, gorgeous, regal, and on and on and on.  You CANNOT go wrong with a Maine Coon.  Their personalities are OUTSTANDING.  I've NEVER met a person who regretted getting a Maine Coon.

Did I mention that I LOOOOVE Maine Coons?

wierd habits

All 3 of mine have there own wired habits. Misty likes to attack light switches. There has been more than one occasion when the lights went out and she was seen falling off the switch. She also learned how to turn the computer one.

Smokey will run up and down  the stairs meowing, then sit at the door at the top of the steps and meow so beautifully. Thne whne you open the door she bolts down the steps and back up again.

Cheyenne likes to open drawers on my dresser and lay in all my cloths. It's not uncommon for me to find kitty hair all over clean cloths. She also likes to help me make the bed, she'll attack the covers and run around like a phsyco. lol

Maine Coon Cats are very beautiful, I would love to have one. I just have these weakness of getting strays, and the sickly cats that I find homeless. That is my addiction I guess. Just once I would like to get a real pedigreed cat, just once. Of course it would be a Maine Coon. I like the dark tabby coloring.

Alyssa forgot to tell you that your babies are adorable.  Their fur looks anogora soft!!

Brenda thanks!  Scootsie was a real sweetheart.  I owned his mother, the white persian, and she had five kittens.  My daughter was a year old at the time and just learned to walk.  When the kittens saw her coming they would all run the other way.....except for Scootsie.  He ran right to her all the time and followed her from room to room.  So of course we had to keep him.

alyssa

Do any of your cats have strange habits?  My Tigger is a thief!  Since he was lost we don't let him out unless we are with him in the yard.  But before that he would wander into the neighbour's yards and steal all kinds of things and drag them home.  I had a whole collection of tennis balls, rubber balls, barbie dolls, brand new pair of gardening gloves still in the package, trolls, stuffed toys and a shoe.  In the fall he'd bring me tomatoes, peppers, and apples.  He would pile them all under my wheelchair ramp at the front door.  My dog thought it was great fun to have a new ball every day!

Now that he is mostly an indoor cat, which he hates by the way, he drags odd socks around and brings up all the stuffed toys from the basement.  When he carries this stuff he will meow loudly  at the same time.  He also loves to play fetch.

He looks a lot like my Tigger!  I bet he did have Maine coon in him.  You must miss him dearly.

I lost my Tigger for a month.  Spent every day searching and posting signs up with his picture.  I got a few calls saying epople had seen him on the other side of the train yards near us.  He must have gotten chased across the tracks and too scared to come back.  Trains are moving throught there all the time.  Finally one day he came running up the driveway into my arms!  He only weighed 4 lbs and was starving!  It took awhile but now he is back to his normal weight of 14 lbs.  He looks bigger because of all his fur!  He also has the destinct maine coon meow.  It actually sounds like berrrrr-ow with a chirp at the end.

Here ia picture of my daughter's cat, Scootsie.  His mother was purebred white persian and his father was a maine coon.  As he got older he wasn't grooming his fur enough and constntly became matted.  I ended up having to get him shaved.  Here he is in his "lion cut".  He has the shorter persian nose and no ear tufts and his coat was long all year round. He passed away in 2003 at age 20 from kidney disease.

Tigger

Tigger was rescued when he was 1 1/2 weeks old  from an owner who was going to throw the kittens into the lake.  He was bottle fed for a couple of weeks till he bit the nipple right off the bottle!  Fiesty little guy.  Right now he is between coats.  Just lost his thick neck ruff and starting to lose his extra fur on the back end.   I prefer him in his winter coat when he looks big and cuddly!  I just adore his ear tuffs that make him look like a lynx.

 tigger maine coon

He is a real hunter so I had to put a huge bell on his neck.  Even then he could sneak up on the poor unsuspecting birds.

We do have Maine Coons in Australia. In Queensland in fact. Just north of Brisbane there is a breeder. If you google Maine Coons they are under the name Korriki (not sure about the spelling).

I'm pretty sure kittens start at around $800 Aus. I am saving up to get one but it will take a while.

Hope this helps

angela, is it uploading to a care 2 album you can't do?

Easiest is from a care 2 album where you up load and then either right click on the thumb nail and paste (use clip board at top) or open it for a larger view and right click and paste--always use the clip board for paste.

or use something like photo bucket, and use the picture icon next to the smilie and paste the url.

Misty likes to help me type, cheyenne helps me make the bed, and smokey follows misty around, lol. They're great cats. We had a HUGE maine coon. He lived to be 13, but he had a urinary tract problem and he also had a problem with his lungs. He lived a happy healthy 13 years, then his illnesses took him away. He was 18.5 pounds. He used to beat our dog up. But now we've got 3 girls, happy and healthy. They're all sister, but misty is the oldest. They were born onto 2 seperate litters, but have the same parents.

Care and Training

Most breeders recommend a high-quality dry food. Most cats can free feed without becoming overweight. Middle-aged cats (5-10) are most likely to have weight problems which can usually be controlled by switching to a low-calorie food. Many Maine Coons love water. Keep a good supply of clean, fresh water available at all times.

Most Maine Coons can be trained to accept a leash. Maine Coons are creatures of habit and they train easily if they associate the activity with something they want (they train humans easily too!).

Special Medical Problems

Individuals within any breed are fairly closely related, and have many characteristics in common. This includes genetic strengths and weaknesses. Certain genetic health disorders may be more or less of a problem in a particular breed than in other breeds. For example, a breed may have a slightly higher incidence of gum disease than the cat population as a whole, but have a lower incidence of heart disease or liver disease.

Genetic problems generally only affect a tiny minority of the breed as a whole, but since they can be eradicated by careful screening, most reputable breeders try to track such problems, both in their breeding stock and the kittens they produce. By working with a responsible breeder who will speak openly about health issues, you are encouraging sound breeding practices.

In the Maine Coon, the most common inherited health problems are hip dysplasia, which can produce lameness in a severely affected cat, and cardiomyopathy, which can produce anything from a minor heart murmur to severe heart trouble. Any breeder you talk to should be willing to discuss whether they've had any problems with these diseases in their breeding stock, or in kittens they've produced; how much screening they're doing, and why.

Frequently Asked Questions

"How big do they get?"

A full-grown female typically weighs between 9-12 pounds and males tend to be in the 13 to 18 pound range.

"Do they need much grooming?"

Maine Coons do not need much grooming and a weekly combing is all that is usually required to keep the coat in top condition.

"But I thought Maine Coons had extra toes...?"

Some "original" Maine Coons were polydactyls (had extra toes). However, modern purebred Maine Coons are rarely polydactyls. This is because all cat associations automatically disqualify polydactyls from competition in the purebred classes. Because of this, most polydactyls were culled from the Maine Coon breed decades ago, and only a few breeders continue to work with them. Since the polydactyl gene is dominant, you can't get a polydactyl kitten unless at least one of the parents is also a polydactyl.

"I think my cat is part Maine Coon. How do I tell?"

The Maine Coon is America's native longhair cat; it evolved naturally in response to the New England climate. Your cat's ancestors might be similar to the cats that founded the Maine Coon breed. However, it's impossible to tell from just looking at your cat if it is related to the Maine Coon or to any other breed. Because the Maine Coon is a natural breed and hasn't been bred to extremes, there are cats all over the world that resemble the Maine Coon. The only way to tell for sure if your cat is a Maine Coon is to look at the pedigree.
wide range of colors and patterns are bred. Eye colors for all coat colors range through green, gold, and green-gold. Blue eyes and odd eyes, (one blue and one gold eye) are permissible in white cats. There is no requirement in the Maine Coon Standard of Perfection for particular combinations of coat color and eye color.

Maine Coon owners enjoy the breed's characteristic clown-like personality, affectionate nature, amusing habits and tricks, willingness to 'help' with any activity, and easily groomed coat. They make excellent companions for large, active families that also enjoy having dogs and other animals around. Their hardiness and ease of kittening make them a satisfying first breed for the novice breeder. For owners wishing to show, the Maine Coon has reclaimed its original glory in the show ring.

MCBFA) to preserve and protect the breed. Today, MCBFA membership numbers over 1000 fanciers and 200 breeders. By 1980, all registries had recognized the Maine Coon, and it was well on its way to regaining its former glory.

Maine Coons were well established more than a century ago as a hardy, handsome breed of domestic cat, well equipped to survive the hostile New England winters. Nature is not soft-hearted. It selects the biggest, the brightest, the best fighters, and the best hunters to breed successive generations. Planned breedings of Maine Coons are relatively recent. Since planned breeding began, Maine Coon breeders have sought to preserve the Maine Coon's "natural," rugged qualities. The ideal Maine Coon is a strong, healthy cat.

Interestingly, the breed closest to the Maine Coon is the Norwegian Forest Cat which, although geographically distant, evolved in much the same climate, and lends credence to the theory that some of the cats responsible for developing the Maine Coon were brought over by the Vikings.
