ACTION ALERT for the UN on behalf of Sea Turtles October 09, 2005 9:14 PM
Dear sea turtle supporter:
With your unwavering support, our effort to protect the leatherback sea turtle from extinction has begun to bear fruit at the United Nations. In order to push this effort further along we need your help. Please take a moment to send a letter to your UN ambassador urging your government to do more.
The threat of extinction to sea turtles was a predominant issue at the 6th meeting of the United Nations Open-ended Informal Consultative Process on Oceans and the Law of the Sea (UNICPOLO this past June. After much debate, that UN body passed a recommendation to implement emergency measures to protect them and sent it to the United Nations General Assembly for a final vote on November 28th.
While this recommendation by UNICPOLOS is a good first step, it is not enough to prevent the critically endangered leatherback sea turtle from imminent extinction in the Pacific.
We need your help. The UN will be discussing the exact wording of the recommendation throughout October. The stronger the recommendation the more likely something will be done to protect the leatherback from extinction.
If you are a US citizen please follow this link to send a letter to the US ambassador to the United Nations urging them to strengthen the recommendation:
While an email letter is good, a mailed or faxed letter is even better. If you can, please copy and paste the letter from the web page into a letter and mail or fax it to the US ambassador to the UN.
If you live outside the US please download the draft letter at:
Please address it to either your highest level contact in your government, the minister of the environment or fisheries or the UN ambassador. Contact me if you need a name or contact information.
Unfortunately, we do not yet have any translations of this letter but if you do translate it please send us a copy so we can share it with your colleagues.
Please forward this action alert to your friends, colleagues, members and supporters and put a link to it on your website. Time is running out for the leatherback!
...there was another action alert directed at the UN - but this action alert is new and please send to Urge the US to Support Stronger Protections at the UN.
