For US Citizens - petition for sustainable agriculture December 17, 2008 9:09 AM

This is from a friend of mine who has immigrated to my home town:

This is a petition asking Obama to appoint a "sustainable" choice as Secretary of Agriculture. Now, online petitions never work, but listen:

Michael Dimock, president of Roots of Change (a non-profit where I currently volunteer), was on a conference call with Obama's transition team last week. He says that they are aware of the petition and said that 25,000 endorsements would get their attention, and 50,000 could really influence Obama's pick.

It's currently at 42,000, and slowing down. Please take 15 seconds to sign, and a few moments to pass this along to your own networks. To reiterate: this petition has the attention of Obama's team, and they are expected to make their choice public very soon, so there are only a few days left to press for a reform-minded choice.

PCRM Action Alert

ATTENTION:

DO YOU OR ANY OF YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS, FRIENDS, OR PATIENTS EAT GRILLED CHICKEN OR HOT DOGS?

THESE ARE FOODS THAT INCREASE YOUR RISK OF CANCER, AND BIG BUSINESS WILL DO ANYTHING TO CONCEAL THAT FACT.

PCRM plans to file two law suits protecting consumers from fraudulent business practices where consumers are not warned about the increased risk of cancer from eating grilled chicken or hot dogs.

One suit will be against national restaurant chains (McDonald’s, Burger King, etc.) for failing to alert consumers about the presence of a known carcinogen (PhIP) in their grilled chicken products.

PCRM will also file a lawsuit against manufacturers and large-scale sellers of hot dogs and other processed meats for failing to alert consumers about the increased risk of cancer due to consumption of processed meats.  A comprehensive report released late last year by the American Institute for Cancer Research and the World Cancer Research Fund concludes that processed meat increases one’s risk of colorectal cancer, on average, by 21 percent for every 50 grams consumed daily. (A 50-gram serving is approximately the size of a typical hot dog.)

In order to bring these suits, we need your help. We need people who bought and consumed grilled chicken products from a national restaurant chain, but did not know about PhIP.  We also need people who purchased and consumed hot dogs, without knowing about the cancer risk from processed meats.

These lawsuits will raise public awareness about the unseen, unhealthful properties of processed meats and grilled chicken. The primary relief sought in these lawsuits is warnings to consumers.

If you or someone you know is interested in helping, please contact PCRM at rbernstein@pcrm.org or 202-686-2210, ext. 314.

Thank you so much for your help,

Allowing spinach and lettuce to be irradiated simply masks unsafe production practices, while supplying lower quality, less nutritious and potentially hazardous food. Ask Congress to step in and protect consumers.

Petition on Aspartame August 27, 2008 8:41 AM

Please take a minute of your time to sign the following petition & forward to as many people as you can:

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/petition/555759748

This petition is to ban aspartame from our food supply.  Aspartame is an artificial sweetener found in everything from diet sodas to children’s vitamins.

  • It triggers brain tumors.

  • It causes headaches, memory loss, seizures, vision loss, coma, and cancer and has been linked to fatalities.

  • It appears to worsen or mimic the symptoms of such conditions as fibromyalgia, MS, lupus, ADD, diabetes, Alzheimer's, chronic fatigue, and depression.

  • Used for people dieting, it actually makes you hungrier & fatter.

  • It is unsafe for unborn children, yet the FDA refuses to issue warnings for pregnant woman.

  • Labeled a carcinogen in Italy & banned from that country’s food supply.

  • A member of the Parliament in the U.K. demanded it be banned citing, “compelling and reliable evidence for this carcinogenic substance to be banned from the UK food and drinks market altogether”

  • The State of New Mexico has tried to ban it from entering their state.

  • For 16 years, the FDA refused to declare it safe for the food supply.  It wasn’t until the influence of Donald Rumsfield, former CEO of Searle now owned by Monsanto I believe (the company that manufactures aspartame) that the FDA declared this substance safe for human consumption.

  • There are over 5,000 products containing this product & the patent has expired – which means it will make it into more of our foods.

  • This substance is especially harmful to people who have diabetes.

  • The FDA would like you to believe this to be safe – that’s because the drug & chemical companies have very deep pockets.

  • The FDA has received thousands of complaints from consumers about aspartame.

  • Much disinformation has been put out on the internet about how all of the dangers associated with aspartame are a hoax.  Big corporations stand to lose a lot of money if this product is taken off the market.

Please do your own research & if you find, as I have, that the dangers are overwhelming real, please sign the petition & forward to as many people as you can.  If we all become educated about these dangers & stop buying any products with this chemical artificial sweetener in it, they can no longer make money off of our naiveté & our health!

As a constituent in your area and a proud Canadian I want you to be my voice and vote against Bill C-51.

Ok here is the final letter that I sent to a few so far.

Dear

I am strongly opposed to this bill as it infringes on my personal choice for good health.

I want access to natural health products protected as they have made a huge difference to my health in a positive way. The medical profession had no answers and the medications that were prescribed caused many side effects, often they would make me worse for weeks.  It was natural herbal formulas that actually gave me a life back so much so that after being on disability for 10 years I was able to come off disability. See my story www.wassickandtired.com

I have been well for 7 years and am happy to be creating my own income which means much in the way of personal freedom and feel very distressed at the possibility of the life giving herbal foods I have been consuming would be taken away.

I am opposed to the police state powers in Bill C-51. As a proud Canadian I want you to hear my voice and vote against Bill C-51.

Yours Sincerely,

fresh news January 09, 2008 2:27 AM

1. The results of a scientific study tends to proove that the modified gene (anti-insect) of the Monsanto GMO corn has passed from the corn into the body of the earthworms, then there's obvious contamination, and we know that if Earthworms dies, the soil will die as well. This could be sufficient for the High authority to give a negative report on GMOs and convince French president Nicolas Sarkozy to ban GMOs culture on our soil.

That's the good news, now onto a very bad news.

2. The president of the major farmers Union (FNSEA), who fears for its profits, (I suspect he receives bribes from Monsanto) has declared this morning, that since the Justice doesn't punish the GMO commandos who mowed GMO (experimental, so they say) fields, he recommand to the farmers to buy GMO corn in Spain (where it's legal ) and cultivate it in France, posing it as civil disobedience.

What's in YOUR milk?

I am posting an email I received from my CSA (which included a PDF attachment that I will share if anyone is interested), and have since heard that it is being reconsidered due to negative feedback from residents here in PA.  Any state could be next.

 Dear farm members and friends:

Perhaps you have heard that the Governors office has bowed to corporate interests on milk labeling to the detriment of consumers.  This particularly effects the advocates of organic production.  We feel that milk producers who wish to produce hormone-free milk should be allowed to state what is not in their milk, particularly the common synthetic growth hormone rBST.

The Secretary of Agriculture feels otherwise and the Governor has agreed to limit the right to differentiate milk in labelling and advertising.  They evidently worry that conventional producers would eventually be forced to change their production methods if an informed consumer rejects their product.

Below is a letter from the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture that requests action be taken.  Normally, we do not contact you on these issues, but this one has far-reaching implications for the ability of organic producers of any commodity to differentiate their product and keep consumers informed.

Please consider taking immediate action on this matter.  January 1st is when the new regulation is due to take effect.
(cont'd)...

 December 03, 2007 12:04 PM

Dear PASA Members,

The time has come to take action on the milk labeling debacle in Pennsylvania! We had planned to ask you in the week after Thanksgiving.  But the time has come a bit sooner when we need an urgent flood of messages to let our leaders in Harrisburg know what you think.

Please take a few moments before the holiday, or perhaps just after, to write to Governor Rendell and let him know what you think of PDA's move to restrict product labeling claims involving artificial hormones and other substances many of us do not want used in the production of our food.

We are asking you, if at all possible, to write a REAL letter (it'll get more attention) to the governor at the following address:
Governor Edward G. Rendell
225 Main Capitol Building
Harrisburg, PA  17102

If time is short, you may use this email address and follow the instructions as prompted:
http://sites.state.pa.us/PA_Exec/Governor/govmail.html

Or, just call his office at (717) 787-2500 right now and make your feelings known to whomever answers.

Sending copies of any correspondence with the governor to your local legislators would make sense as well.  We're also asking that you consider writing letters to the editors of your local papers or of the ag press ( Lancaster Farming, The Farmer's Friend, Farm & Dairy, etc…) to let people know your thoughts about this issue.  It's important that PASA members be heard at this critical time!

Perhaps no single issue in Pennsylvania agriculture during this first decade of the new century has run so contrary to the goals of sustainability.  Sure, labels can be misleading, and we do need state leadership in deciding how they can be consistently and fairly applied. But it is simply outrageous to think that keeping consumers in the dark on important matters involving their food is the better way to go.

As always, it's important that you individually express your opinions in ways that demonstrate the diversity and thoughtfulness of the PASA membership. But for those who want some help in formulating those thoughts, I offer the following considerations:

n  Animal Welfare – Cows treated with rBST have higher rates of mastitis and shorter lives in general.

n  Human Health – The science is inconclusive as to whether or not there are long-term negative effects on humans who consume milk from rBST-treated cows.

n  Freedom of Speech – Farmers need the ability to use truthful claims on labels that help them communicate with their customers and make a good living.

n  Consumer Information – It's not irrelevant at all for consumers to know who uses artificial hormones and who doesn't.

n  Ethical Consistency – Why are performance enhancing drugs banned in other aspects of our daily lives, but not in food production?

There are many other points that could be made, and I look forward to seeing what many of you come up with.  But the important thing is that you make your voices heard right now!

Please send this action alert to your friends, neighbors, customers and any other group in Pennsylvania you can think of who might care about this issue. I'm also sharing with you an op-ed written by me that was published in today's (11/20/07) Centre Daily Times – it is attached. Please feel free to distribute this as you wish, possibly even to your local papers.

Let's enjoy this week of Thanksgiving knowing full well that food is one of our most precious resources, and that we are united in defending the integrity of how it is produced and marketed to the public.

Yours sincerely,
Brian Snyder, Executive Director
Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture (PASA)

Update

Good News for Ban Terminator Campaign

RightOnCanada.ca has been campaigning for most of this year to halt Canada's promotion of genetically engineered food and related technologies. We have a lot of work ahead of us, but I wanted to let you know about two positive developments.

As you may know,
Canada is one of the largest producers of Genetically Modified crops in the world. Canada has been called part of the "Axis of Evil" for its past efforts, at meetings under the U.N. Convention on Biological Diversity,  to overthrow the international moratorium on Terminator seed.

Terminator seed is genetically engineered so as to become sterile after one harvest. It is part of a strategy by Monsanto and agribusiness to privatize the world's seed supply and require farmers to purchase GM seeds every year from agribusiness corporations. 1.4 billion people around the world depend on farmer-saved seeds, which are crucial for their food security and for the planet's biodiversity.

Here are two recent positive breakthroughs in the fight for food security and biodiversity:

1) The EU's Environment Commissioner, Savros Dimas, wants to ban two types of GM corn because they pose "unacceptable" risks for the environment (see article below). Separate studies have suggested that the GM plants' insecticide harms butterflies and gets into streams, where it poisons aquatic life. "This could and should be the beginning of the end for GM crops in Europe," says Clare Oxborrow, GM campaigner for Friends of the Earth.

2) 80% of British Columbians want mandatory labelling of GM foods. NDP MLA, Gregor Robertson, has just introduced "Right to Know" legislation, which would make BC the first province in Canada to require GM food to be labelled. Phone or email Premier Gordon Campbell telling him you want the "Right to Know" legislation passed (phone: 250 387-1715; email:premier@gov.bc.ca).

If you havent already done so, please take a moment to urge Stephen Harper to adopt Bill C-448 to ban Terminator seeds in Canada.

Don't Let Local Farms and Healthy Food Lose Out to Special Interests Wednesday, 3:00 PM

Work on the 2007 Farm Bill has begun, but the legislation is far from passed.  Negotiations are underway leading up to a final vote this fall—right now we have a window of opportunity to let Congress know local farms and healthy food cannot be ignored in favor of special interests.

The farm bill isn't just about subsidies, it's time to put food back in the farm bill and support programs that meet the needs of farmers, ranchers, communities and consumers. Before the deals are made, sign your name to the 'No Farms, No Food' petition.

You can make a difference.  Help us gather 10,000 signatures before the 4th of July Congressional break. When you sign your name and forward on to five friends, we'll send you a 'No Farms, No Food' bumper sticker to show your support for a new direction in farm and food policy.

By adding your name to the petition below, you’re letting Congress know it’s time to prioritize:

  • Protecting working farms and ranches from sprawl
  • Making local foods more available
  • Encouraging healthy diets
  • Ending hunger in America

E-mail received from my MP - Peggy Nash:

Hello Elena,

Thank you for your letter. I agree, Terminator seed technology has the potential to be very dangerous and you can certainly count on my support to protect biodiversity and a farmer's right to harvest seeds.

I've included below the latest press release from my colleague  NDP Agriculture Critic Alex Atamanenko, regarding the NDP's opposition to terminator seeds. Thanks again for writing.

NDP Parliamentarians Work To Protect Farmers' Right To Save Seeds

Hundreds of letters flood PM's office in opening minutes of web campaign

OTTAWA NDP Agriculture Critic Alex Atamanenko (British Columbia Southern Interior) says Stephen Harper’s office is being flooded with e-mails from across the country calling for the prime minister to do the right thing for people, farmers and the environment by making sure Bill C-448 becomes law.

These letters are being sent to the prime minister through www.rightoncanada.ca in response to Atamanenko’s Terminator Seed Ban Act - Bill C-448, tabled last week that would ban Variety Genetic Use Restriction Technology (GURT in Canada.

“Carbon copies of these letters are being sent to my office so I can say with certainty that within minutes of the website being activated the prime minister had already received over 700 letters,” said Atamanenko. “The question is, how many more letters will it take to convince him to act?”

Atamanenko says the government’s stated position to assess Terminator on a case-by-case basis as they do for other genetically modifying technology is unacceptable. “Canadians do not want to have to monitor this issue for the next 20 years, repeating their concerns on a case-by-case basis. They need their government to protect them from Terminator technology today.”

“I am committed to working with Canadians from across the country, including the Canadian Biotechnology Action Network, the National Farmers Union and The Rideau Institute who are deeply engaged in this issue,” said Atamanenko.

In 2005 the Canadian Patent Office granted the first patent on Terminator to Delta & Pine Land and the US Department of Agriculture who jointly own the technology.

“We know that Monsanto may soon conclude their second bid to buy Delta & Pine Land which will make them the owners of the most advanced Terminator research in the world,” says Atamanenko. “With that sale, Terminator seeds could be introduced in Canada without public debate or considerations of the social and economic impacts because Canadian regulations do not require this.”

Good News! Terminator Seed Ban Act introduced and needs your support

Dear Elena,

I write to share with you the exciting news of our important victory in the battle to ban Terminator seeds in Canada. Thanks to the efforts of thousands of Canadians like you, Bill C-448, the Terminator Seed Ban Act, was tabled in the House of Commons on May 31, 2007. Bill C-448 is a Private Members Bill by NDP Member of Parliament and Agriculture Critic, Alex Atamanenko.

In recognizing our efforts, Mr. Atamanenko said that, judging by the 1,400 letters that my office has received, and which continue to arrive daily, Canadians are spelling it out loud and clear to this government “ BAN TERMINATOR!"

Next step is to ensure that it becomes law!

If enacted, this bill would prohibit any field-testing or commercial use of Terminator seed technology in Canada. This bill would be Canada's commitment to the world. But this will only happen with your help.

You can take instant action by going to our website and sending a letter to Prime Minister Harper and your Member of Parliament urging Mr. Harper to take concrete action to protect farmers in Canada and around the world by adopting as his own, Bill C-448 that enacts a national ban on Terminator seed technology.

Thank you for caring and especially, thank you for taking action.

In peace and with hope,

Kathleen Ruff

Senior Advisor to the Rideau Institute
and founder of RightOnCanada.ca

FDA Regulators Using Legal Trickery to Jeopardize Alternative Procedures and
Products

The FDA has been known to use legal maneuvering to try to end your access to natural health products (like vitamins, minerals and herbs) and natural health therapies of all sorts. We believe they are at it again. This time, their ploy is to issue a "Guidance" that implies these therapies can be "Medicine," which creates the risk that any non-physician who uses them could be held to be practicing medicine without a license. Since these practices could be considered "Medicine" any products intended for such use could be considered untested drugs and could therefore be forbidden.

Your Comments are Vitally Important

Please sign this petition & leave your comments:

While we do not expect our alternatives to be taken away from us immediately, we know it is easier to stop or change a bad guidance before it is finalized, rather than ever getting it repealed afterwards. FDA has given us an opportunity to let them know we want them to respect our right to choose the type of therapies we want for ourselves, including alternatives to pharmaceutical treatments.

almond_law

Description/History:
Starting in August or September of 2007, raw almonds available in the USA, Canada and Mexico, will no longer be "truly raw" due to a mandate passed by the USDA, FDA and the California Almond Board, announcing that all almonds including organic must be pasteurized. Information is available at the following link:

Action Plan and Pasteurization - Frequently Asked Questions

The problem is the law has been passed with little public input(if any) or notification whatsoever. In addition all pasteurized almonds available in the marketplace will still be labeled as raw almonds. Can this be considered fraudulence or an out right lie? Are you willing to give up your food freedom choices?

The primary reasons for passing this law are two isolated outbreaks of salmonella, in conjunction with conventional almond farms a few years ago. To the best of our knowledge no salmonella outbreaks have EVER been associated with organic almonds.

Within the past 10 years tomatoes, spinach, green onions, peanuts, grapes, melons, lettuce, and sprouts have all been linked to salmonella outbreaks. Does that mean we should eliminate all fresh produce? Absolutely not!!!

Almonds, the heartbeat of all nuts, literally, have been associated with reduced risk of heart disease, a rich source of calcium, magnesium, vitamin E, protein, fiber and antioxidants to name a few . These amazing and life enhancing health benefits, will be devastatingly reduced if not completely eliminated in the pasteurization process. Three of the potential suggested methods of pasteurization are:

-Propylene oxide(PPO) fumigation(propylene oxide was also used as an insecticidal fumigant till 1988 when its registration was terminated. California prop.65 rates PPO as a carcinogen. Cited from www.mbow.org)

-High heat(which degrades the integrity of the nuts and enzyme structure).

-Steam pasteurization (will also further devalue the nutrients, enzyme activity and antioxidants.)

This is a call to all those who care about their health, we need to join forces by bringing this to the attention of everyone from the mass media to the common consumer before it goes any further than almonds! It is our basic right to choose unprocessed foods! We have created a petition that we will present to the California Almond Board, the FDA and the USDA. Go to www.livingnutz.com and click on the almond pasteurization petition link on the front of our page and sign your name as well as your state, town, and zipcode. E-mail us at info@livingnutz.com with any other questions, media relations, ideas or information you may have relevant to this cause.

A Huge Win on Climate Change March 23, 2007 10:28 AM

This just came in; I love that our last petition made a difference.

I signed this one too. Diana

Dear friends,

Last week, Avaaz campaigners hand-delivered our 100,000-signature climate change petition to the environment ministers of the world's most polluting countries. It worked. The chair of the meeting waved the petition in the air, calling on his fellow ministers to act--and they agreed that climate change would be the #1 issue at the G8 summit in June.

The momentum is on our side. Let's build on it. Next Tuesday, another high-level group will meet to move forward with G8 planning -- and we can keep the focus on the climate issue by showing that the call for action is growing. Can you help us reach our ambitious goal of 150,000 signatures by Tuesday by forwarding this email to ten friends? Your friends can sign the petition here:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/climate_action_g8

Message to World Leaders

On Thursday, March 15th, Avaaz presented the first 100,000 signatures to the G8 Environment Ministers meeting. Subsequently, German Chancellor and G8 President Angela Merkel vowed to make climate change the top priority of the summit of G8 leaders this June.

However, talk is not enough. These leaders represent the countries that contribute the most to climate change. We need to make sure they take real action.

To keep the pressure on these leaders, we are trying to get as many signatures as possible from around the world before the G8 summit on June 6th. Please add your voice now!

Petition To World Leaders: Climate change is the greatest threat facing our world today - and we are almost out of time to stop it. You must tackle this problem now, decisively and together. Start working toward a new global agreement this year. Set binding global targets for emissions to avert catastrophic climate change. Take bold action immediately - and we will join our efforts with yours.

Keep Tuna Safe for Our Families and for Dolphins
http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/492975274

More than half of the tuna consumed by American families comes from non-U.S. producers. But some of these producers -- particularly in Ecuador and Mexico -- use practices that can hurt or kill dolphins and catch tuna with increased mercury levels.

In the Eastern Pacific Ocean, large, mature yellowfin tuna often swim with pods of dolphins -- a relationship that's exploited by some commercial fishers using purse-seine nets that ensnare tuna and dolphins alike. Since the late 1950s, approximately seven million dolphins have died from this practice.

The practice poses an obvious risk to dolphins, but the large tuna that swim with dolphins often contain the highest levels of mercury. So this practice not only harms dolphins, it also poses a risk to people who are unlucky enough to eat tuna caught in such a manner.

Send a message to the Environmental Protection Agency and Food and Drug Administration to improve mercury testing so we can keep tuna safe for our families and for dolphins.

CONGRESS BLINDFOLDS CONSUMERS March 14, 2006 1:48 PM

Well, Congress let us down... it's now up to us to convince the Senate!

CONGRESS BLINDFOLDS CONSUMERS- REMOVING RIGHT TO KNOW WHAT'S IN YOUR FOOD

On March 8, despite massive public opposition, including 50,000 calls and letters from supporters of the Organic Consumers Association, the House of Representatives passed the controversial "national food uniformity" labeling law, which would eliminate over 200 state food safety labeling laws. The law basically takes away local government and states' power to require food safety labels such as those required in California and other states on foods or beverages that are likely to cause cancer, birth defects, allergic reactions, or mercury poisoning. The bill would also prevent local municipalities and states from passing laws requiring that genetically engineered foods and ingredients be labeled. Under the bill, hundreds of state laws and regulations would be eliminated, including those relating to the safety of milk, fish, and shellfish. In order to become law, the bill will now have to go to the Senate for a vote. Because of the enormous public backlash against the bill, Washington analysts believe the bill will have great difficulty passing in the Senate. OCA and other public interest organizations have vowed to go "all out" to stop this anti-democratic, anti-consumer bill in the Senate. Take action here: http://www.organicconsumers.org/rd/labeling.cfm

Doi you know WHAT'S IN YOUR FOOD? March 07, 2006 8:06 PM

Public demand is fueling the fast-growing increase in organic production and distribution, which may be seen as threatening to large-scale conventional farms and the enormous food processing industry.

They would like nothing better than to be able to call their products organic to “catch the wave” of this industry without having to be strict about the quality of their foods.

The only way to maintain real organic foods is to pressure the USDA to adopt high standards.

I suggest joining the Organic Consumers Association at www.organicconcumers.org

Action Alert from the Organic Consumers Association:

Congress Poised to Pass Bill Taking Away Right to Know What's in Your Food

Tell your Congressman or Congresswoman to vote "No" on House of Representatives Bill H.R. 4167, the "National Uniformity for Food Act"

The House of Representatives will vote this week on a controversial "national food uniformity" labeling law that will take away local government and states' power to require food safety food labels such as those required in California and other states on foods or beverages that are likely to cause cancer, birth defects, allergic reactions, or mercury poisoning. This bill would also prevent citizens in local municipalities and states from passing laws requiring that genetically engineered foods and ingredients such as Monsanto's recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH) be labeled.

The House will vote March 2, 2006 on a bill that would gut state food safety and labeling laws. H.R. 4167, the "National Uniformity for Food Act," lowers the bar on food safety by overturning state food safety laws that are not "identical" to federal law. Hundreds of state laws and regulations are at risk, including those governing the safety of milk, fish, and shellfish. The bill is being pushed by large supermarket chains and food manufacturers, spearheaded by the powerful Grocery Manufacturers of America.

Big food corporations and the biotech industry understand that consumers are more and more concerned about food safety, genetic engineering, and chemical-intensive agriculture, and are reading labels more closely. They understand that pesticide and mercury residues and hazardous technologies such as genetic engineering and food irradiation will be rejected if there are truthful labels required on food products. Industry-sponsored H.R. 4167 is gaining momentum and must be stopped! Act now! Preserve local and regional democracy and protect yourself and your family from unsafe food by sending an email or calling your Representative and urging them to vote "No" on H.R. 4167.

Please Take Action Now--Send a Message to Your Congress Member in the House of Representatives to Vote "No" on H.R. 4167

http://www.organicconsumers.org/

And please call your Congress Member at 202-224-3121

Petition to Support U.S. Food Agenda 2010 January 17, 2006 11:41 AM

Lax Oversight Found in Tests of Gene-Altered Crops
From: The New York Times
January 3, 2006
Lax Oversight Found in Tests of Gene-Altered Crops
By ANDREW POLLACK

The Department of Agriculture has failed to regulate field trials of
genetically engineered crops adequately, raising the risk of
unintended environmental consequences, according to a stinging report
issued by the department's own auditor.

The report, issued late last month by the department's Office of
Inspector General, found that biotechnology regulators did not always
notice violations of their own rules, did not inspect planting sites
when they should have and did not assure that the genetically
engineered crops were destroyed when the field trial was done.

In many cases, the report said, regulators did not even know the
locations of field trials for which they granted permits.

This petition calls on U.S. elected officials to:

place a moratorium on all genetically engineered foods & crops unless adequate safety-tested...

begin the phase-out of industrial agriculture's damaging practices by banning the most dangerous pesticides...

implement a long-term "transition to
organic" program to shift agricultural production in the US from chemical-intensive, industrial farming to at least 30% organic by the year 2010

ALERT: U.S. PROPOSES DOUSING WILDERNESS AREAS WITH HERBICIDES December 16, 2005 7:09 AM

ALERT: U.S. PROPOSES DOUSING WILDERNESS AREAS WITH HERBICIDES

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has proposed to apply massive amounts of herbicides to public lands in 17 Western states. The BLM claims these pesticides need to be applied to forests, rangelands and aquatic areas in order to reduce the risk of fire and slow the spread of invasive weeds. Under the proposal 932,000 acres would undergo chemical application in 17 western states, including National Monuments and National Conservation areas. An integral part of this proposal involves aerial spraying of toxic herbicides, which increases negative impacts on non-targeted vegetation, wildlife, and people, including recreationists, tourists, and native peoples. The pesticides that would be used include persistent and mobile chemicals, including known developmental and reproductive toxins. Public comments are being accepted until January 9, 2006. Sign the petition here to support the continued use of traditional vegetation management techniques on public lands that do not involve toxic chemicals.: http://www.organicconsumers.org/blm.htm  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Hi Diana.... thats fine by me. ty for letting me know. I am happy.....well thrilled to read many who have contributed to the Artificial Sugar thread.

I have been truly concerned equally about CODEX and have signed the petition. I have been searching for one for ages, however, I wrote to them personally and here too in melbourne Australia. below is the quick link to sign about CODEX and vitamins etc.

Talk about silent. I feel that the pharacutical companies are very greedy but with the trend towards healthy living and life style i would suggest that they have seen the potential there or feel the pinch as many go across to an alternative medical way.

I approached my local health food shop which has a chain of them. they have on board naturapaths who will help you in the store. I asked if they had heard about the CODEX  issues and they had. Good on them for knowing...anyway she happened to pull out from under her counter three bottles of meds for three different customers who buy this particular product. She said they cant buy it and she isnt allow to sell it or big fines and she also mentioned that it will be difficult to buy even more products as they flex their muscles. This WILL BE true if we dont at least have a try. but with WHO and the other one...W?? are in bed sleeping with this huge company. Ugh.

This is one of the most serious that hardly anyone knows about or if they do they might shrug their shoulders and say..how can we make a difference? Well we can and I stand on my 'soap box and go rah rah rah' grrrrrr. This means that all Reiki people cant practice, Sharmans cant do their job, Tribal people cant do it too. And when you think about it there I would suggest there are more people doing it than wont. So although they say there will be stiff fines, how can they regulate it? Well naturapaths and the like WILL not be able to offer or sell Vitamins or certain homopathy meds or the like as they can only use them for their own person and cant sell or give them to anyone else and if they have to then they have to refer them to a GP or MD. OMG its ridiculous and someone is making huge money. If they are caught selling or giving their Vitamins, Oils or Meds to another, CODEX will take action and take them to court for ILLEGAL DRUG TRAFFICKING>>> OMG! It seems as I have read much about this that people who are 'into health and professionals' will be all trussed up and tied up and tossed out and some losing jobs etc. How DARE they impose such stuff...I d use a different word here!

How Dictatorial??!!!!!

my blood is rapidly boiling over this, HOW DARE THEY! So spread the word and get people aware to sign this as its really a silent issue. Meaning its rather hush hush.

I have signed the petitions and sent someone an email about the organic products.  But I would need to beg to differ on the petition about the false sugar.

I have been drinking diet sugar for quite a while because I'm on a diet.  Sugar has not being recommended through I do use it sometimes.  So what I'm being told or what I think I'm being told is that I cannot use false sugar either.

So through I have signed the petition, it was not for me.  It would be for the others who have suffered from the diet sugar.

I will continue sticking to "Sweet n' Low" and "Splenda" because I have no intention of going off my diet.

But do thank you for listening and I am glad to be of help.

(sorry about the vents)

Stop The Sneak Attack in Congress on Organic Standards September 20, 2005 7:38 AM

The Organic Consumers Association (OCA) needs your immediate help to stop Congress and the Bush administration from seriously degrading organic standards. After 35 years of hard work, the U.S. organic community has built up a multi-billion dollar alternative to industrial agriculture, based upon strict organic standards and organic community control over modification to these standards.

Now, large corporations such as Kraft, Wal-Mart, & Dean Foods--aided and abetted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) are moving to lower organic standards by allowing a Bush appointee to create a list of synthetic ingredients that would be allowed organic production. Even worse these proposed regulatory changes will reduce future public discussion and input and take away the National Organic Standards Board’s (NOSB ) traditional lead jurisdiction in setting standards. What this means, in blunt terms. is that USDA bureaucrats and industry lobbyists, not consumers, will now have more control over what can go into organic foods and products. (Send a quick letter to your Congressperson online here: http://www.organicconsumers.org/sos.cfm)

Tomorrow, Tuesday, Sept. 20, acting in haste and near-total secrecy, the U.S. Senate will vote on a “rider” to the 2006 Agriculture Appropriations Bill that will reduce control over organic standards from the National Standards Board and put this control in the hands of federal bureaucrats in the USDA (remember the USDA proposal in 1997-98 that said that genetic engineering, toxic sludge, and food irradiation would be OK on organic farms, or USDA suggestions in 2004 that heretofore banned pesticides, hormones, tainted feeds, and animal drugs would be OK?).

For the past week in Washington, OCA has been urging members of the Senate not to reopen and subvert the federal statute that governs U.S. Organic standards (the Organic Food Production Act—OFPA), but rather to let the organic community and the National Organic Standards resolve our differences over issues like synthetics and animal feed internally, and then proceed to a open public comment period. Unfortunately most Senators seem to be listening to industry lobbyists more closely than to us. We need to raise our voices. (Send a quick letter to your Congressperson online here: http://www.organicconsumers.org/sos.cfm)

In the past, grassroots mobilization and mass pressure by organic consumers have been able to stop the USDA and Congress from degrading organic standards. This time Washington insiders tell us that the “fix is already in.” So we must take decisive action now. We need you to call your U.S. Senators today. We need you to sign the following petition and send it to everyone you know. We also desperately need funds to head off this attack in the weeks and months to come. Thank you for your support. Together we will take back citizen control over organic standards and preserve organic integrity.

anonymous Mad Cow Petition - Please Sign August 03, 2005 2:54 PM

Friends - This group is called "Healthy Cooking" so I know this topic is vital to each of us in the group. Cooking is not healthy if food ingredients are not safe. Yet sometimes our government seems unable or unwilling to do what it should to ensure the safety of America's food supply. Mad Cow disease is the latest example, unfortunately. Mad Cow disease has been a disaster for the UK, where the disease caused 147 horrible human deaths, the slaughter of millions of cows, and a huge economic cost. Yet our own USDA, even after confirming yet another Mad Cow case in our own country less than two months ago, refuses to take this threat seriously enough. I urge each of you to take a moment now to sign this very worthwhile petition: It is from the good folks at Consumers Union (publishers of Consumer Reports). Their investigations show that the USDA is behaving secretly, not responsibly, and not testing cattle widely or rigorously enough. Consumers Union needs our help to send a strong message to the USDA that this time they must act fast and decisively. To be effective, the petition must be signed by at least 20,000 people, so there is still a way to go. But if you sign it, and forward it to at least one other friend to sign it, we can reach or exceed the goal. For ourselves and our children: Let's make a difference.
