Alkaline - Acid Balance
9 years ago
| Nutrition

Acid runs your Battery not your Body

Working in the area of nutrition, I have found that 95% of people are too acid: burned out & stressed out. They are eating an unbalanced diet which is too acidic.  Acid by its nature breaks down bodily tissue; acid is highly irritating to delicate internal tissue of the body.

Our blood needs to be around 7.35 to be at its optimum level.  A slight change in the pH of the blood to 7.2 could result in death.  Thus the blood, as well as most of the body, needs to stay within tight range of alkalinity to function well and be healthy.

Diet needs to Be Alkaline - to Be Energized

Our body is about 20% acidic and 80% alkaline: therefore it is recommended that we consume approximately 20% acidic foods and 80% alkaline foods.

Sadly, most people eat far too many acidic forming foods (proteins, grains, sugars, processed foods) and not enough alkaline foods (fruits and vegetables), which eventually takes their body out of balance.  The stimulants tobacco, coffee, tea, and alcohol create an acid environment.  Also stress will make the body even more acidic.

Too Acidic?
9 years ago

Have you discovered that you are too acidic, not surprising and are wondering what to do?

.

How to create a more alkaline body:

1.    Eat 80% alkaline food, 20% acid by volume daily

2.    Eat lots of fruits and vegetables – this will help balance out the body.

3.    Chew your food well. Saliva is alkaline and you can produce 2 gallons a day!

4.    Drink 2- 3 litres of pure water per day.

5.    Live in the light of the day – we need sunlight.*

*According to Kris A. Pletschke in his book The Raw Conscious Evolution:

.

“Sunlight effects the levels of acid within the body as well.  An alkaline chemistry is enhanced by the presence of full spectrum sunlight.  The opposite is true in the absence of sunlight.  Darkness creates acid build-up within bodily tissues.  The effects compromise the immune system, skin vitality, vitamin D production, and more.”

Alkaline AND High Protein?
9 years ago

Has anyone got off of Atkins and found that any carb at all goes to fat, and thus incredible weight gain afterwards?  I had no choice but to return to the high protein after a weight gain of close to 50 pounds (which was 25 more than I lost.)

How does one eat Alkaline and high protein?

So what are Alkaline Foods?

Acid-Alkaline Balance and Your Health

books to read
9 years ago

I've come accrossa really great book that specifically talks on the acid and alkline levels. It's a great source of information and includes all aspects of a healthier life, not just food but exercise, correct breathing and the best water to drink. The book is written by author Daniel Reid, you may have heard of him. He studies alot of Eastern philosophies and the Tao of life in general. The book is called " The Tao of Detox ". If you find it, read through it and see what you think, it's wonderful, a really good guide. He also has a collection of many other books which I am also reading. Hope this helps.

Have fun, be happy,

Stacy

pH and Bone Loss
9 years ago

Do you know how important the alkaline/acid balance is for our bones?

A recent seven-year study conducted at the University of California, San Francisco, on 9,000 women showed that those who have chronic acidosis are at greater risk for bone loss than those who have normal pH levels. The scientists who carried out this experiment believe that many of the hip fractures prevalent among middle-aged women are connected to high acidity caused by a diet rich in animal foods and low in vegetables. This is because the body borrows calcium from the bones in order to balance pH. — American Journal of Clinical Nutrition

Dear Diana,

Thank you so much for these wonderful informaiton.

Just two things:
Several links above are not reacheable...
Are you sured all vegis and fruits are alkaline??

Thank you!!

Hello IC G
9 years ago

I see that one of the links for the book is no longer available, his book can probably be found at health food or book stores  The Raw Conscious Evolution’  by Kris A. Pletschke

I will post more about which foods are Acidfying soon.

For simplicity eating more fruits and vegies will be more alkaline but look at the lists above and you will see the alkaline fruits and vegetables.
Here are a few of the Acid forming foods
9 years ago

.

ACIDIFYING FRUITS

Blueberries, Cranberries, Prunes, Sour Cherries, Rhubarb, Currants, Plums, Prunes, Processed Fruit Juices

ACIDIFYING BEANS VEGETABLES LEGUMES

Chocolate, Potatoes (without skins), Pinto Beans, Navy Beans, Lima Beans, Cooked Spinach, Kidney Beans, String Beans, Corn, Lentils, Olives, Winter Squash, Asparagus

Most ACIDIFYING SWEETENERS

NutraSweet, Sweet 'N Low Aspartame, Equal, White Sugar, Brown Sugar, Processed Honey, Molasses

Just because a food is acid forming does not mean it is necessarily not good for us; it is all about BALANCE!

9 years ago

Dear Dinana,

ALKALIZING FRUITS
Apricot, Grapefruit, Tangerine Tropical Fruits

For the above mentioned fruits, I am afraid they are not as alkalizing...

Especially the Grapefruit and Tangerine,  they cause me a great deal of joint pain...  They are not the same family of orange, orange is something very neutral and mild...

If taking it too much with empty stomach makes acid...

Tropical Fruits are numerous, I am not sure what they are referring to...

......

Or, may be it just me who feels this way??

9 years ago
Sorry for missing word in the sentence of "if taking too much...", it should be "If taking too much Abricot with empty stomach..."

Sorry again!

Diana,
9 years ago
You have rhubarb in both Alkalizing AND Acidizing...

9 years ago

Thank you Nathalia, actually r should only be on the acid forming list.

IC G., when it comes to alkaline forming foods what is important to know is that a food can start out as an acid food but in the body becomes alkaline as it makes it's way through, which is why we say alkaline forming.

9 years ago
Dear Diana,

I totally agree with you! Especially things like lemon! But tangerine and grapefruit, no matter how sweet they can be, they are acid to me...
9 years ago

Hi ICG

Most fruits are acid to begin with but do turn to alkaline once they go throught the body but they feel very acid in the stomach.  The stomach if it is a healthy is full of acidic juices to break down our food. So for you I suspect that it is too much acid al at once.  The other thing that could be going on is that you may simply have a sensitivity to these fruits at this time. One of the reasons maybe candida.

I am not a qualified nutritionist or naturopath so all I am saying is from my own readinga and research.  If there is someone with qualifications out there to add to this I would love that.  I enjoy learning.

Question:
9 years ago

(I'm really getting into this, and am SO GRATEFUL for this wealth of friendly information!!! )

Is tofu fermented already or is there some fermenting process that needs to be done at home???  I've been eating it since I became a vegetarian at age 9, but don't know the answer to this question...

What a BUMMER that dried beans are on the acidifying list... I LOVE getting protein from bean, lentils, etc. as the bulk of a meal, in veggie soups, etc.

9 years ago

Hi Janey!  There really is nothing wrong with acid foods; it is just the balance that needs to happen.  Too often people eat way too many of the acid forming foods neglecting the alkaline ones thus creating an imbalance in the body.  Acid foods are easy to fill up on as they are things like toast, cakes, cookies, hamburgers, sandwhiches etc.  These are the foods people reach for when the want a quick hunger fix.

Tofu is not fermented; it is coagulated.  I find tofu very digestable and eat lots of it.

9 years ago
Patt, I can't get the links in your post on August 4th to work they are the ones about the charts to print out. Any help there would be appreciated.  Tal
9 years ago

Just realized that I had not put in the link to my favorite chart which is by Dr Hay the one who brought this whole concept out.

In 1933 a New York doctor named William Howard Hay published a groundbreaking book, A New Health Era in which he maintains that all disease is caused by "self-poisoning" due to acid accumulation in the body.

9 years ago

Actually I don't know what that is...that what I get for simply copying.

I don't do that too often

While I'm asking, what's with the pressed or pickled veggies?  How to do it, why are they good, can they be bought in stores?  Do good ol' kosher dills qualify?
Fermented tofu
9 years ago
Fermented tofu is very smelly, actually it stinks!!
There are white, green or black...depends on how long...
Asian people like to deep fried it and dipping into soysauce with smashed garlic, dark rice vinaigar and few drops of white sesame oil.   Fermented Tofu as a side dish usually accompanied with pickled cabage+carrot slightly spicy.
My two cents...
9 years ago
By the way, after deep frying, stinggy fermented tofu becomes goldish and smells wonderful.
Some people like to steam them...  I personally just can't stand the smells...
Thanks IC G

So does plain store-bought tofu still qualify as an alkeline food?

I feel bottomless regarding food lately- always hungry- it's noon here and today I've already eaten an orange, an apple w/ a little good peanut butter, miso soup w/ tofu and chard and veggies, 2 slices of lite spelt toast with avocado, and green tea w/mint.  I'm pretty sure that my choices are all fine (right?) but why am I so hungry?!  I've had fruits, veggies, lean protein, good fats, whole grains...  Luckily I'm not craving anything in particular, but I feel empty.  Oh yeah, I'm full time breastfeeding, that could be it.  I'm cautious to add more carbs... this 75% alkeline and 25% acidifying focus has got me a little hung up!

Regarding the fruit breakfasts and vegetable dinners, I think these foods take around 1/2 hour to digest... easy to see why they're better as a snack or in addition to a well-balanced meal for feeling more satisfied.

Great information
9 years ago
Thanks everyone for this. THere is a lot of detailed information here. I have a lot of information taken down about this subject from the links that Patti gave earlier. There is a lot to think about with this subject. We try to eat a reasonably healthy diet - mainly vegetables with grains, and occasional meat. Lots of nuts and seed and some fruit. But I feel that I need to think more about the balance of the food |I eat. I have a Zen cookery book that has a lot of information and recipes along these lines. It also suggests changing the diet with the seasons and the weather. I am sure I will be back with questions when I have absorbed the info. Thanks again. claire

If I wake up in the morning with stiffness in my joints and that "achey breaky" feeling in my body, a cup or two of bancha tea really helps to tip my body's pH back toward alkaline.

If that doesn't work quickly enough, I'll soak 3 umeboschi plums in 16 oz. of bancha tea and drink the ume/bancha tea ...

"Umeboshi Plum" is really an apricot and available in health food stores.  It's most significant value in this case is it is the most alkalanizing food and helps neutralize  acid created by faulty food choices.

By taking 10 grams of umeboshi it is possible to neutralize the acidity created by consuming 100 grams of sugar.

You can use umeboshi for:

* over acidity in the stomach
* intestinal problems
* tiredness
* after consuming a harmful food such as sugar.
* lack of appetite
* constipation
* bad breath
* morning sickness

Ume-sho-ban:  An umeboshi, shoyu, bancha tea concentrate added to hot water that is helpful in the case of stomach troubles, tiredness, anemia, weak blood, and headaches caused by excessive consumption of expansive foods.  It is extremely alkalinizing for the body.

Macrobiotic Home Remedies Made From Bancha/Kukicha Tea

Several folk medicines for specific medical conditions are made by combining twig tea or bancha with other medicinal foods such as gomashio (sesame seeds and sea salt), soya sauce and umeboshi. Although there is no scientific research confirming the effectiveness of these tonics, there is a wealth of anecdotal evidence, and many of these remedies have roots in the ancient traditional medicines of Japan and China.

Clearspring does not recommend these teas as a substitute for professional medical advice. If you have any of the conditions listed below, check with your personal health care provider before using the suggestions below.

Ume-Sho-Ban:

Crush the meat of one umeboshi and add 1/2 teaspoon soya sauce to it. Add boiling bancha tea (1/2 -1 cup, according to individual taste). You may also add several drops of ginger juice. Stir well and drink. For children use without ginger and with less soya sauce.

This drink can be useful for the following conditions:

  • headache caused by excessive consumption of foods high in sugar or oil
  • stomach trouble (nausea, lack of appetite)
  • tiredness
  • anaemia, weak blood and weak circulation
  • intoxication by carbon monoxide

Sho-Ban or Soy-Bancha:

Put one or two teaspoons of soya sauce in a cup. Add hot bancha to fill the cup. This tea will have a strengthening and refreshing effect on healthy people. Soya sauce as well as bancha have an alkalinising effect on acidic blood which can be caused by overactivity or eating lots of sugary foods or animal foods. This tonic is known to activate the circulation.

Take 1 to 2 cups a day until relief is obtained, but do not continue for more than 3 to 4 days in a row. If you add a little grated ginger to this drink it is particularly effective in cases of stomach trouble such as nausea and flatulence.

This drink can be useful for the following conditions:

  • stomach troubles (in particular stomach acidity and indigestion)
  • menstrual cramps, flatulence
  • carbon monoxide intoxication
  • rheumatism

Gomashio-Bancha:

Add a cup of hot bancha to a teaspoon of gomashio, and stir well. Use this drink the same way as Sho-ban above. It has been found to be particularly useful for stomach or intestinal cramps. It also helps relieve tiredness in the summer.

Kuzu (Kudzu) Drink

Strengthens digestion, increases vitality, and relieves general fatigue. Dissolve a heaping teaspoon of kuzu powder in 2 teaspoons water and add to 1 cup cold water. Bring the mixture to a boil, reduce the heat to the simmering point, and stir constantly, until the liquid becomes a transparent gelatin. Stir in 1 teaspoon tamari soy sauce and drink while hot.

Different needs?

I have had an aching stomach since I was born, more or less. A few years back a friend wanted support in following the Atkins diet. Giving up grain made me pain-free for the first time in my life, and I decided that I was gluten intolerant. The last months I have realized that IBS would suit better, and this talk of alkaline food goes directly to my heart... er, stomach... But one thing bothers me. Several years ago, in my pre-gluten era, I came by a person who diagnosed me as acid insufficient and prescribed hydrochloric acid for my burning stomach and throat. And it worked very well indeed. Which the usual brands of alkalising pills did not at all. They rather make the burn worse. According to the blood group theories on food, blood group A people have a hydrochloric acid deficiency, and should therefore ADD acid. (I don't know if I have A blood, but it fits.) So here I am. On the one hand the hydrochloric acid pills help me in a pinch, but on the other I can see by the lists of food you provided earlier that I feel better eating alkaline food. I cannot make these ends meet? Can you? Best wishes, Stella

Hi Patt

No. At first I thought it was just gluten with a hidden lactose intolerance hidden beneath it, but there are some idiosyncracies. I cannot drink homogenized milk, but non-homogenized seems to work quite well but not perfectly well, which more or less rules out the lactose intolerance. Milk proteins may be a factor. Fat of any kind makes things worse. There is also the suspicion that Candida albicans is a part here, since Candida on the run allegedly have some of the same symptoms that I have referred to as CFS. My veterinarians (read; doctors) have diagnosed this as depression. Their solution was to feed me with anti-depressants which I, not so amiably, declined. I'm on sick leave since about two years for depression, a diagnosis that nobody who knows me believes in. I'm extremely exhausted which has led into obesity and a bad over-all condition. When I add zinc I feel better. Does this make more sense? Stella - who hopes to have gained some more facts before seeing the physician again.

No doubt, fresh fruits and vegetables are best, but for those who are interested, I recently switched nutritional bars to one which, among other benefits, claims to be "alkaline forming."  It's called Organic Food Bar, its various flavors range from mostly raw to all raw, and I found mine at Trader Joe's.

Found this and used it to talk to my doctor about the changes I'm experiencing with respect to my "digestion" ... Gas, Bloating and Burping ... and it worsened  soon after I began taking "digestive enzymes" ...

Thanks for the list. No, I do not have a depression. No, I do not know if it truly is IBS, but let's go back to the initial question; tummy hurts when I eat most of the food stuff in the acid list, and it feels very tranquil when I eat foods from the alkaline list. Still, if I eat food from the acid list, the stomach ache goes away when I eat the hydrochloric acid pills. This still bugs me... Could it be a question of pH in the body being one thing, and the pH in the stomach being another, and they don't inter-relate very much? I don't know enough physiology to know. Stella has received 5 new, 47 total stars from Care2 membersStella has been awarded 17 butterflies for taking action at Care2 Stella L., oh sure ... the pH can differ ... measuer urine pH and then saliva pH and you'll see the difference ...
8 years ago

Patt Hi...what is the difference? Can you please explain a bit more to me regarding that? thanks

I have just found out and I never knew before that I am an A+ negative

Also if one is a diabetic this can have an affect on the body of course but there is another blood test which goes with or without being a diabetic and in that it exacerbates many things. Aches and pain, tiredness,exhaustion,feeling malaise or under par for no reason usually, mood swings, cravings and the list goes on. This disorder seriously effects your liver.

This is a simple blood test to see and if you reach over 125 and worse up to 400 this needs to be addressed

What is it Hemachromotosis. Too much iron in the system.

I have one cell. It is genetic and many dont realize they have it. Some have two cells. Two people with this blood disorder shouldnt marry well they can but they CANT HAVE CHILDREN, because the couple are carriers thus the children will  have the disorder fully. It is amazing just how many people dont get tested just as its amazing just how many people have this disorder. Usually or sometimes a dr doesnt think to test for it. If you have two cells then one has to have blood taken. Mostly its with men as they dont menstruate and women do therefore it may not be picked up. If diagnosed with hemachromatosis then ALL FAMILY MEMBERS NEED TO BE TESTED.

I have a friend who has diabetes and I remember that she was always so tired she has one cell also. Her blood count was 400 and even tho she has one cell is has to have her blood taken once a month. Now she says she is she is fighting fitter and well. Good hey. She had gone thru her entire life with food problems aches n pains and major tiredness but no one realized that even tho she had one cell that her reading was so high. Its not well known apart from drs who are experienced in this disorder. So I must have mine checked again and note the count. Those who have blood tests should also ask for this test too and note it MUST be under 125 and your fine over that and you have to insist on them taking blood once a mth and by doing that you will feel heaps better.

I am sure that foods that react unbalances the system. I must take note of it all. Thanks for this great thread.

Since last time I wrote...
8 years ago

... my spouse (who has half a uni exam as chemist) looked through some biochemical stuff. It could be that I have an imbalance between sodium and potassium. Potassium is needed to balance the levels of sodium in the cells. If there is a surplus of sodium, the potassium in the body ends up levelling the sodium. But, at the same time potassium is needed to produce gastric juice. Hence my problems, it would seem. When I eat food with salt in it, the elements needed to produce gastric juice vanishes to level the salt I just ate and I get an awful tummy ache which can be alleviated by HCl pills. Now it adds up. I don't usually add lots of salt to my food, but it is Everywhere. The last two weeks, spouse and I have cut salt (NaCl) to a minimum. We both feel much better, and he wasn't really ill to begin with... On top of that, we learned that nitrates are a no-no for me, so no prepared meats or cheese. Most cheese have nitrates in them here (Sweden).
Alkaline Diet
8 years ago
I have numerous physical issues, including CFS and chronic bronchitis.  I finally went on an alkilizing diet, and I notice changes.  I am following (best I can anyway) the pH Miracle Diet by Robert & Shelley Young.  Has anyone read this book?

I have been eating 80/20 alkaline foods, drinking green drinks, taking chlorophyll, and other things he recommends -- for just 7 days now.  I do feel better, though my pH is still very low first thing in the morning.

Can anyone tell me:  When one is first shifting over to an alakline diet, does the pH balance go haywire from the body's attempts to get rid of the acid waste?
8 years ago
Hi Nat,

Many things can happen to the body when you start to alkalize it.  One major thing is that you begin to purge the toxins.  This happens mainly from the nose area.  You may begin with a runny nose and think you are "sick".  It gets progressively worse and turns into the "greenies" before you will be purged out.  (Sorry about being so graphic.)

It will depend a lot on where you are checking your body for pH levels.  If you are checking with urine, you will mostly find that it is acid as it is normal to be acid.  If you are swabbing the inside of your mouth with the test strip, you will get the best indicator.  You should do this at least 2 hours after you have eaten and about 1/2 hour after brushing teeth and rinsing completely.

One thing that can cause the pH balance to fluctuate is that many people will eat very healthy and follow the alkaline diet while continuing to drink soda.  Soda is the total killer of the pH balance in the body.  The pH scale works kind of the same way the earth quake scales work.  They measure each number on the scale as 10 times more devastating as the number before it... for example, a 7.0 is 10 times more devastating than a 6.0.

pH measures sort of the same way, but in a downward manner.  If your body needs to be at 7.1 - 7.4 to be pH balanced and something measures at 6 it is 10 times more acid than it should be.
If it is 5 it is 100 times more acid
If it is 4 it is 1,000 times more acid
If it is 3 it is 10,000 times more acid
If it is 2 it is 100,000 times more acid.

Well, soda measures 2 on the pH scale.  It just is not something we should be putting in our bodies.  They are discovering young girls now with osteoporosis who are still in their teens.  When you are acid you deplete your body of calcium and thus you lose calcium in your bones.  Your body will keep your brain and heart functioning with the calcium it needs even if it means taking it from your bones.  Oh, sorry forgot to say that calcium is the best alkalizer for the body.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ excerpted from an article on web ~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dr. Warburg, in his Nobel Prize winning study, in the 1930's, illustrated the environment of the cancer cell. A normal healthy cell undergoes an adverse change when it can no longer take in oxygen to convert glucose into energy. In the absence of oxygen, the cell reverts to a primal nutritional program to nourish itself by converting glucose through the process of fermentation. The lactic acid produced by fermentation lowers the cell pH (acid/alkaline balance) and destroys the ability of DNA and RNA to control cell division. The cancer cells then begin to multiply. The lactic acid simultaneously causes severe local pain as it destroys cell enzymes. Cancer appears as a rapidly growing external cell covering, with a core of dead cells.
Dr. Otto Warburg finished one of his most famous speeches with the following statement: "…nobody today can say that one does not know what cancer and its prime cause is. On the contrary, there is no disease whose prime cause is better known, so that today ignorance is no longer an excuse that one cannot do more about prevention."[2]
Otto Warburg won the Nobel Prize for showing that cancer thrives in anaerobic (without oxygen), or acidic, conditions. In other words, the main cause for cancer is acidity of the human body.
I forgot to mention that one 12 ounce soda will take 34 glasses of water to detoxify the body.
8 years ago
From what I know of biology, nothing leaves a working stomach in an alkaline form. Even antacids will be doused with enough acid (HCl) to fully acidify the calcium in order to break it down for use. Most alkalines are either neutralized or acidified within the stomach. This is my understanding of how the "mammilian" digestive process works.
8 years ago
Actually Mike, this concept is wrong.  The stomach must be alkaline in order to be dumped into the small intestine and be absorbed.  For instance, when the stomach appears to be acid and you take an antacid tablet, you are doing a lot of harm to your body.  The antacid tablet will make the stomach "think" that it is alkaline and will dump into the small intestine.  This undigested and unalkaline food cannot be absorbed, and thus you eat and eat and eat without getting any nutrition.  This is what causes us to be hungry when we have just eaten.
The stomach uses digestive enzymes to break down the food and change it to alkaline so that the body can make use of it.  It takes one enzyme to digest veggies, it takes a different one for starches, a different one for fruits and a different one for protein.
The one for fruit must work alone.  The one for veggies can work both with starch and protein, however, the protein enzyme and the starch enzyme cannot work together.
The way you combine your foods can make all the difference in the way your body can process the food you eat.  You should always eat fruit alone, with no other foods.  In fact, you should only eat sweet fruits together and acid fruits together.  You will not get a burning feeling if you are combining them properly.  It is when all the enzymes are trying to fight each other to do their jobs that you get the burning and acid reflux.
You should make fruit your first meal in the day, even if you don't eat until 2 pm.  It takes one hour for fruit to digest, it is the fastest food to digest.  So, you should not eat anything else for at least one hour.
Your second meal should be starch and veggies.  These two enzymes can work at the same time and this will take 3-4 hours to digest.  If you are eating properly, you will begin to feel hungry again just about when this time is past.
Your last meal of the day should be protein and veggies, these two enzymes can also work together.  The protein, however, takes at least 7-8 hours to digest.  That is why when you eat protein and starch together and they are fighting each other you get the burning feeling.  One will sit there and wait for the other to digest and will putrefy while waiting.  This will also cause a lot of gas buildup.
If you learn to combine foods properly, you feel a huge energy jump and also many have lost weight.  You can also eat ALL you want if you combine the foods the right way.  Your body will process the food and use it instead of not processing and storing as fat.
I hope that I have explained it so that all can understand.  Sometimes I ramble and I understand and others don't, so if you have questions, I will try to answer them.
Hi Miss tress, does this mean that I have over $200  worth of gastrointestinal-biology text books that are incorrect ?
This would include such articles as found at:
This is false. In most cases, the characteristic "sourness" is due to fermentation of foods
in the stomach due to maldigestion, a common result of poor food selection, overeating,
eating too fast, or
that where abnormal acid production exists, it is far more often
especially in elderly individuals!
fermentation, but may actually increase the problem in the long run. They may also
create new problems such as malnutrition. Most minerals, vitamins B12 and folic acid all
require adequate stomach acid for absorption, and chronic antacid use can dramatically
reduce the availability of these nutrients.
I just copied and pasted this from the article you refered to... I am quite sure that is exactly what I was explaining.  It did not go into the depth of combining foods or that the acids used to digest certain types of foods as I tried to in laymen terms.  pH balance is a VERY complex issue and I tried to make it as easy to understand as I could.  I did not study alopathic medicine, I studied natural medicine.
There is one other cause of stomach "soreness", the recently found cause of many ulcers is viral in nature.  I have personally found that ingestion of cayenne 5 or more times a week, has completely eliminated all trace of any ulcers I once had. Capsicum, the active ingrediant in Cayenne, is a harsh alkaline.   As for that pdf, as in many like it that include an advert, it begins accurately enough, then, when it gets to sales of the product, contradicts many earlier statements.  I had not read through to the end before posting that link; that is my fault and I apologize for that.
 One thing to note, it did state accurately enough that food leaves the stomach at about pH 3.5 or so, which is greatly reduced in acidity, but is no where near alkaline (pH above 7; seven being neutral).
  My only point is that there is a lot of stuff out there floating about; I didn't mean to upset you in any way, I don't want to start a fight ; I just sometimes feel frustrated....You have Kevin Trudeau and his salesman pitch that "your stomach should never be subject to antacids since this floods the stomach with acid and thereby makes it alkaline" so you must "drink more acid" in the form of cidar vinegar  ( http://skepdic.com/trudeau.html )
    "Gabe Mirkin, M.D., warns:
Anyone who tells you that certain foods or supplements make your stomach or blood acidic does not understand nutrition.
You should not believe that it matters whether foods are acidic or alkaline, because no foods change the acidity of anything in your body except your urine. Your stomach is so acidic that no food can change its acidity. Citrus fruits, vinegar, and vitamins such as ascorbic acid or folic acid do not change the acidity of your stomach or your bloodstream. An entire bottle of calcium pills or antacids would not change the acidity of your stomach for more than a few minutes.
All foods that leave your stomach are acidic. Then they enter your intestines where secretions from your pancreas neutralize the stomach acids. So no matter what you eat, the food in the stomach is acidic and the food in the intestines is alkaline."
It all just scares me that people will go so far to get the money empire he (Kevin) has.
Mike the info you stated above does not take the whole into consideration.
We are not simply concerned with stomach acid and it is not about some foods being acidic to begin with; it is about foods being acid or alkaline forming in the body.  The word important here is forming.
Also, one only has to do some consistent daily urine testing for a few months (and yes I did do this ) to see how foods affect the acid alkaline balance of the body. I saw very clearly what was happening as I worked to bring a balance back to my ill body.
Hi, Diana -
You are SUCH a fount of information!  I love your groups!
You mentioned that you'd done the urine testing for the acid/alkaline balance - I'm assuming it's the PH testing.  Several years ago I started using the Hydrion Papers (4.5-7.5 scale), which are a saliva test.  Everything I read comparing the two indicated that the saliva test is more accurate.  What's your take on that?
A sidenote:  I remember an old Army doctor using PH saliva tests on me when I was about 4 as I was severely anemic.  He could tell at a glance whether my health was improving or not, although they STILL did the finger-poke every day!  Nowadays most doctors think PH testing is archaic and don't utilize them, which is a great loss to our health since they can provide an overall snapshot of body status.
acid counteracts acid
7 years ago
Wow  So many equations to think about here in order to be healthy. But I am glad you have hit on this topic  as I have eaten healthy all my life and was taught by my father at an early age that a sick body is an acidic one  and that  acid counteracts acid. In other words an acidic food can turn your body to an alcaline condition. As long as your urine is pale yellow it is a pretty good indication of good health. Drinking enough water thins the blood and cleanses the kidneys/liver. So I believe eating everything in moderation is simply the key. It seems like a simple solution to a complicated problem but we shouldnt make eating so complicated. After all we are not consumming huge amts of any one food  to do that much damage --Are we?
7 years ago
Good points and Kat, it does not have to be that complicated: the EATING part of our lives.
The problem is that often people are eating large quantities of the unhealthy foods...addictions to caffiene, carbs, sugar and meat are the main culperts.  When I am advsing the people I work with I do keep it simple by telling them to just eat more fruit and vegetables as that is almost always lacking in the average person's diet.  I figure if they do that then the acid/alkaline and too much protien will be adressed.
Nine Rules for Proper Food Combining
7 years ago
By Dr. Herbert M. Shelton
Reprinted from Dr. Shelton's Hygienic Review
There are sound physiological reasons for eating foods in compatible combinations. In other words, some foods, if mixed in the digestive system, will cause distress!
The principles of food combining are dictated by digestive chemistry. Different foods are digested differently...
  • Starchy foods require an alkaline digestive medium which is supplied initially in the mouth by the enzyme ptyalin;
  • Protein foods require an acid medium for digestion- hydrochloric acid.
As any student of chemistry will assure you, acids and bases (alkalis) neutralize each other. If you eat a starch with a protein, digestion is impaired or completely arrested!
The undigested food mass can cause various kinds of digestive disorders. Undigested food becomes soil for bacteria which ferment and decompose it. Its by products are poisonous, one of which, alcohol, is a narcotic that destroys or inhibits nerve function.
It plays havoc with nerves of the digestive tract, suspending their vital action such that constipation may well be a result! As set forth in Dr. Herbert Shelton's FOOD COMBINING MADE EASY these are the salient rules for proper food combining.
The Nine Basic Rules of Proper Food Combining:
1. Eat acids and starches at separate meals. Acids neutralize the alkaline medium required for starch digestion and the result is fermentation and indigestion.
2. Eat protein foods and carbohydrate foods at separate meals. Protein foods require an acid medium for digestion.
3. Eat but one kind of protein food at a meal.
4. Eat proteins and acid foods at separate meals. The acids of acid foods inhibit the secretion of the digestive acids required for protein digestion. Undigested protein putrefies in bacterial decomposition and produces some potent poisons.
5. Eat fats and proteins at separate meals. Some foods, especially nuts, are over 50% fat and require hours for digestion.
6. Eat sugars (fruits) and proteins at separate meals.
7. Eat sugars (fruits) and starchy foods at separate meals. Fruits undergo no digestion in the stomach and are held up if eaten with foods that require digestion in the stomach.
8. Eat melons alone. They combine with almost no other food.
9. Desert the desserts. Eaten on top of meals they lie heavy on the stomach, requiring no digestion there, and ferment. Bacteria turn them into alcohols and vinegars and acetic acids.
Good talk Patt...Thank you!
80% of our diet is best if it is Alkaline and so meat eaters need to be aware that meat is very acidic.  That said it is not just meat eaters that get an imbalance by being too acidic; vegetarians do too. I was working with a man who had been a vegetarian for 35 last week and his diet was way too acidic!
6 years ago
I am reminded of this topic today as I prepare for a small group coming over with their food journals to look see how they can get it more balanced in the alkaline department.
6 years ago
From all of the reading and research I have done over the last 30 years this is what I believe is the place to start whe wanting to eat a balanced healthy diet.
If you balance the Alkaline/Acid then so much gets addressed.  You will be eating lots of vegetables and fruits which is what the average person's diet lacks.  And there is no way you can eat too many carbs or too much protein.
So Balance the Alkaline/Acid of your diet andmuch will be taken care of.
I don´t know about you, but here, in Europe, theres not much information about alkaline - acid balance.
In fact, I had never heard anyone talking about this topic before.
I found very interesting the fact that a slight change in the pH could be so dramatic, and that stress can make people's organism more acidic.
People should be more aware of what they eat I think..
Good topic though : )
I learned a bit more today
Thank you for the info.  What if you have acid-reflux disease and an ulcer? Anymore it doesn't matter what I eat or drink I still have a lot of acid. It is even showing up as a skin rash. Yes, I am going to the doctor this month. Debbie
Acid Reflux Disease
5 years ago
It may be worth checking into, but frequently people with "acid reflux disease" may actually have too little hydrochloric acid in their stomach and that's why they have problems. Taking Swedish Bitters or digestive enzymes can help. You may want to find a Naturopath or other practitioner to talk to about this.
5 years ago
Debbie, for sure follow up with your doctor as we are not medically qualified and what Mira says is worth checking out.
Have you worked with balancing your acid/alkaline foods?
I find in my line of work that almost everyone that comes to see me is eating a diet that is imbalanced in the direction of being too acidic.  And I have seen people through diet and some concentrated foods decrease their acid reflux medication.
So you might as well work with this principle....it does not cost anything and you will end up with a healthier diet.
4 years ago
If asked for one Healthy Eating principle that would make all of the difference; I would say balance your Acid/Alkaline foods. So do read the info here and if you would like personal help from me then just ask.
Diana, I don't know if this relates directly to acid/alkaline
foods, but I've recently found I am lactose intolarant. I've
had almost constant stomach pain for sometime now, and
troubles with elimination.  With the help of a friend, I did
discover the lactose problem and felt much better in just
a few days after switching to lactose free milk. It has even
helped with the elimination problems.
That is great Debbie! It is often like that with milk.
Most people are too Acid. An easy way to alkalize is to eat watermelon and have lemon water....each once a day and separately.
4 years ago
Oh wow...this is great info. I have trouble eating anything from a cow...not just milk.
I notice lately I've been craving fruits that are juicy...maybe this could be because my body has become too acidic? Maybe...who knows.
4 years ago
Rachel, that could be what is happening. If that is so then eat lots of green leafy veg too as they are highly alkaline forming. Fruit can also be a sweet craving so we do not want to eat too much.
hhmm, I posted here several days ago and for some reason it's not here. I was wondering if anyone else has ever had this, the info with the PH strips state urine is slightly more acidic than saliva. I am the opposite. My urine is finally alkaline, Thank the Lord, but my saliva is still acidic. I' thinking it could be from my amalgams. I will let you know after I get them safely removed! I have been doing green smoothies for 2 years and was hoping that would make me alkaline, it helped but didn't bring it into the normal range. I was sure eating Veganish for the last almost 9 months would finally change it but nope. I started drinking alkaline water a month ago and my urine is now normal! Yeah!! I'm so thankful something is working because I had cancer cells 7 years ago and I know that cancer can only grow in an acidic body! Thanks Diana for all the great info!!
Randy I agree with you and had that serious problem as well that turned into GERD, Stomach ulcers and esophical ulcers as well.
I decided to ditch some of the meds b/c they were seriously making me ill and I swapped for Liquid Chlorophyll.
 Woweee does this stuff work, however, you can get all your greens and vitamise them and drink it too but I decided to buy a bottle of Liquid Chlorophyll instead and late last year into this year I was pretty serious and now??? I dont have that problem anymore with all the side effects it brings. I can live a better life thanks to Liquid Chlorophyll.  I started off with a 1/2 capful into 750mls of water.. a bottle and did this twice per day.
It helps you detox but more importantly it balances your acid/alkaline situation in the body as well as a heap of other amazing things. I love it. A lady told me today at the gym to add it to your tea as then it turns into a herbal tea. Must try it.
You can certainly feel the difference from taking it and not taking it. An amazing feeling b/c it gives you lots of energy. Im all for it for if  you dont know about it and do it you too will be amazed and decide to drink it daily to keep the body well and healthy.
Thank you Mongi; it is so important to be living in a balanced way in all aspects of our life.
SummerAnnie, I sometimes drink liquid chlorophyll and love it. The one I use is so tasty.
Here is some food for thought:
To neutralize a glass of cola with a pH of 2.5, it would take 32 glasses of alkaline water with a pH of 10.
2 years ago
I was curious about the minerals in water....could that throw off our balance?
For instance, our water contents are:
Hardness 12 gpg
Iron 24 ppm
TDS (total dissolved solids) 925 ppm
PH 6.2 ppm
Although we have a water softener, we often get red water or orange whites (very grrrrr).
So I'm wondering...would this affect a person's alkaline-acid balance?
2 years ago
Good for you Diana. I know its really nice to drink but the best thing of all is that its AMAZING FOR INDIGESTION and GERD and anything like that including IBS. Not only that I was speaking to a young mum the other day at the Gym and dont ask how we got speaking about Liquid Chlorophyll but we did and she raved on about it and I said all my good points about it and added that it also had made my teeth white!!! She did a quiet scream and said YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS...I noticed that as well! lol and we both smiled at each other showing our teeth!
It is also a fantastic body and breath deodorizer as well. It also rids the body of inflammation and infections. Im using it on a tiny tiny leg ulcer that I have no idea how I got and used it before bed as it had a large red circle around the sore. Say hmmmm 2.1/2 inches of redness and by morning it had cleared up to 1/2 inch of redness surrounding the sore. Like thats so good when you dont a/ have to go to the Drs and B/ it doesnt cost that much to help you cure the ailment.
I drink 1.5 litres of water with liq chlorophyll in it daily. Then I take a break for a few days and resume again.
You can do it by yourself without buying it and that is to vitamise all your greens, silver beet, brocoli even cabbage is excellent..whatever you like but its gotta be GREEN I think Id skip onions!
Btw Liquid Chlorophyll has lots and lots and lots of vitamins and minerals in it.
Water?..........  you have to learn to read the bottle of water you are drinking and make sure its got a incy wincy bit of sodium in it and nothing else Water sure be pure anyway. Put water into a brown bottle and leave it in the sun. It will get rid of the impurities. I ve never heard of red water before unless its been tainted or its from a natural bore. Bore water here tastes ghastly but the water in MELBOURNE Australia is DELICIOUS!
Mind you if I was buying water I am very careful as to who creates it and who sells it and and and and. Im fussy b/c you can be 'HAD' with bottled water. Is there no sanctity in anything? ???!!
Rachel, minerals naturally occurring in the water are alkalizing which is good.
Dangers Of Not Eating Alkaline
“Eating an alkaline diet was key in helping me get my health back; it saved my life!” — Diana
According to Doctor William Howard Hay from New York, all disease is caused by ‘self-poisoning’ due to acid accumulation in the body. Acid/alkaline imbalance causing disease is not a new concept: Dr. Hay said that in 1933, in his book A New Health Era.
Results of eating too many foods that are acid-forming:
1.  Acid-forming foods deplete the minerals in our body. Our blood and cellular fluid will become too acidic. To control this, the body will steal minerals like calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium from the bones, cartilage tissue, and muscles to create the balance. This is the beginning of osteoporosis and arthritis.
  • Joints dry out, becoming stiff and less flexible.
  • There is pain in the lower back and muscle stiffness.
2.  Risk of heart attack and stroke increases due to the build-up of plaque and weakened blood vessels.
3.  Dry and wrinkled skin occurs more rapidly.
4.  Blood sugar fluctuations and diabetes are more likely.
7.  Weight gain occurs, with a difficulty in losing weight.
5.  Digestive problems increase.
6.  Constipation increases, due to lack of digestion.
8.  Weakened immune system.
9.  Weakened glands and organs.
10.  Headaches and depression.
are many other ailments that are caused by over-acidity. While there are other ways to decrease acidity, diet is your obvious first step.
In short… Acid is for Your Car Battery – Not Your Body!
What Research and Experts Say and Do:
  • An overly acidic condition weakens the body and can become dangerous. Our body requires a slightly alkaline condition to function well. Blood, for example, needs to be at 7.4 pH. A shift in blood pH of just 0.2 could result in death. Obviously, the body does not want to die, so it is forced to borrow minerals (calcium, sodium, potassium and magnesium) from vital organs and bones to neutralize the acid.
  • A seven-year study, conducted on 9,000 women at the University of California, showed that those who have chronic acidosis are at greater risk for bone loss than those who have normal pH levels. Many of the hip fractures among middle-aged women are connected to high acidity, caused by a diet rich in animal foods and low in vegetables. –American Journal of Clinical Nutrition
  • “The countless names of illnesses do not really matter. What does matter is that they all come from the same root cause… too much tissue acid waste in the body!” Dr. Theodore A. Baroody says in his remarkable book Alkalize or Die.
  • Immune cells that are too acid or too alkaline do not produce antibodies or cytokines (chemical messengers to regulate other immune cells), and they have impaired phagocytosis (the ability to engulf and destroy microbes). As a result, the affected individual becomes susceptible to viral, bacterial, fungal and other infectious microbes as well as cancer,” says Dr. William Lee Cowden.
There are many more of what the experts say and recipes at the end.
