    dress like a pirate June 19, 2008 5:01 PM

    Supplies

    • black construction paper
    • thick cardboard
    • paper
    • glue
    • colored pencils
    • paper punch
    • paints
    • black elastic
    • silver foil
    • scissors
    • tape measure
    How To Make It
    1. Measure around your head and cut a piece of cardboard the same length. Fold the cardboard in half and draw the shape of your hat.
    2. Cut it out. Take your hat cut out and trace it on the thin black cardboard. Cut it out and unfold the cardboard and construction paper. Glue the black construction paper to the cardboard.
    3. Decorate it anyway you want. Try adding a white or gray skull and cross bones. How about cross swords? Perhaps you might want to use some colored or white paper to outline the brim of your hat? How about a buckle or feather? Gold coin?
    4. Cut a piece of black construction paper in the shape of an eye patch. Cut a piece of black elastic long enough to go around your head snuggly. Punch a hole on either end of the eye patch. Thread a piece of black elastic through loop and knot. Thread the other end of the elastic to the other hole and tie a knot.
    5. Cut a hoop of thick cardboard big enough for earrings. Add a notch long enough to slip over your ear. Paint your earring silver or gold.
    6. Draw daggers and swords on the thick cardboard. Cut them out and cover the blades with tin foil. Glue tin foil in place. Trace the handles onto black construction paper. Cut them out and glue them to the handles.
NotesUse bandana's and colored fabric for head scarves and waist belts. Wear black pants, striped shirts, or a white button up shirt with puffy sleeves. Purchase bags of plastic jewelry to wear and place in your treasure chest.  [ send green star]

    treasure map June 19, 2008 5:03 PM

    Supplies

    • 3/4 cup cold coffee or tea
    • White paper
    • Blowdryer
    • Markers
    How To Make It
    1. Rip all along the edges of your white piece of paper (don't cut them, you need to rip them).
    2. Crumple the paper into a tight ball.
    3. Flatten the paper out and put onto a cookie sheet.
    4. Pour coffee or tea over the paper. Make sure water covers all the paper.
    5. Let the paper soak for about 5 minutes then pour the water out of the cookie sheet.
    6. Leave the paper on the sheet and blow-dry the paper on high for about 5 minutes. Turn the dryer down to low and continue to dry for 2 minutes more.
    7. With your markers, draw your map.

Note #1 Draw a big X to mark the spot of the treasure. Popular treasure map features are directional arrows in the corner (North, South, East, West), water falls, rocks, cliffs, mountains, jungle, cave, coves, pass, beach and palm trees. Popular Pirate map feature names are Bloody Beach, Falls of Doom, Skull Rock, Deadman's Cliff, Captain's Cavern, Serpent Pass, Pirate Cove, and Hangman's Tree.

Note #2 Want to fool your friends? Mark a site on the map with an X and have directions leading to it. Then take some lemon juice and a paint brush. Mark the site of the REAL treasure with an X in lemon juice. Let it dry completely. An adult can hold the paper up to a hot light or over a candle flame. The real X will become visable by turning brown.
