For just the sheer joy of it, I like tangerine.  It smells to me like bottled sunshine.  I'm always in a good mood after smelling it.  The kids love it and it's just a happy EO.

Is it possible to have only ONE favorite???  Oh I love tangerine and patchouli both too.  hmmm

Today my favorite is GRAPEFRUIT.  It is zesty!  I love it in my shampoo and the shower.  I want to eat it, yum yum.

OMG Nag Champa! Definitely. That stuff rocks.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

EOs January 24, 2005 9:43 PM

I have loved nag champa since I was a kid. I also love pachouli and neroli. These 3 just make me happy when I smell them. Chances are if you were to stop by my home, there would be nag champa going, either incense or EO on the light rings. I have the incense stashed in every room in my house.

...do I have to pick just one???

One of my favouriteīs at the moment is a blend of geranium and ylang ylang!

When it comes to incense though itīs sandalwood without a doubt!

 [ send green star]

 January 26, 2005 9:31 AM

sorry-forgot to say why

Well geranium and ylang ylang is great for your hair in shampoo to make it shine + it smells sooooo good and īromantic (I need some romance in my life!)

Sandalwood is so comforting I think! It makes me feel secure and good about myself!

...interesting choice Caedwyn...a very heady essential oil..very sensuous oil (interesting fact: used to be worn by prostitutes to attract clients! )

Thanks so much for sharing...continue to enjoy!

It's pefectly fine to have a favourite essential oil for the day..in fact I quite like that idea, because I like you, change my mind constantly!

Grapefruit is a lovely zesty essential oil...good for celulite and weight loss as well (because it is a natural diaretic ie makes you wee more).  But please don't rely on Grapefruit to change your body overnight!!  If trying to lose weight etc Grapefruit is not a miracle worker, you'll still need to follow a healthy weight loss and exercise plan

.for sharing!

Nag champa January 27, 2005 4:36 AM

hi February 18, 2005 3:14 PM

It's been a while since I've posted, but thought I'd help revive this thread.
My favorite eo is lavender...I love the smell and it is the one oil I never want to be without because it is so versatile! I use it to help disinfect scrapes or cuts, I've used it with success to help with a minor burn I received while cooking (took the pain away and there was no blister or scar!) and it helps me to relax and relieve headaches.

anonymous my favorite February 18, 2005 3:43 PM

I have a couple, patchouli & lavender. I also like lilac. Patchouli because it has a aroma that soothes my spirit. Lavendar because it reminds me of summertime & Lilac, from a couple of lilac bushes that was in the entranceway of my grandmother;s yard. She past away in '97, she was my father's mother & was very close to me.

Lavender is such a great versatile essential oil...and like you said, absoloutely fantastic for burns and scalds and scarring.  Also fantastic for reducing swelling and bringing bruises to the surface quickly, hence the brusing also disappears quickly too!

An essential for the home first aid kit!

Just one?    Oh my!!!!!!   If I could only have one, I would have to pick Lavender.. It is good for everything and should be part of a first aid kit... antibiotic, good for burns of all kinds, relaxing, helps you connect to the higher planes, dreams, etc. etc.   oh and it smells darn good

Lavender has to be the number one essential oil for the first aid kit! So versatile and safe.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

 August 31, 2005 1:06 PM

HMMMMMMM, this is going to be hard.  Practical uses I would go with either Lavender or Tea Tree.  Great for everything, skin conditions, injuries, antiseptic, antifungal, and microbial, antibacterial, and antiviral!

But if I was going with sheer pleasure of the senses.........a blend I make with Sandalwood, Rose, Lavender, Cedarwood, and sweet orange!  Soothing, antidepressant, and just plain old sensually exotic!

I have to agree with you Robyn...you can't beat lavender and tea tree for health and antibacterial.  Shame tea tree doesn't smell a bit nicer, lol!

It's certainly very hard to reach a decision as to which essential oil is your favourite; the more you learn about essential oils and the more essential oils you become familiar with the harder that decision is to make!!  Your blend sounds wonderful...will have to try that one for myself!

My favourite essential oil is forever changing...at the moment, purely for the wonderful smell it has to be peppermint....trouble is it smells good enough to eat!!! LOLOL

Everyone read Jitterbug Perfume? September 15, 2005 10:51 PM

Up here in BC,Canada there is a company called Escents, local purveyors of all things smelly and sweet. Their latest line for fall has some Fab-u-lous(!) blends, including "Oasis"-blackcurrent & grapefruit. "Study"- peppermint & basil. Buuuut, my all time favorite essential oil....is Clary Sage. Incredible for cramps (just rub on your belly/abdomen) and the scent is overall relieving, enlightening and potent. Truly an earthly blessing ~*~ P.s. good to meetchall! P.s.s. another great mix for headaches is eucalyptus and rosemary- rub on temples and back of neck, maybe a dab under your nose.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Like Debbie, my all-time fav's are Patchouli and Lavender.

Patchouli has been my personal favorite since I was a little kid. It just seems to be ME! I have found a drastic reaction to Patchouli - people either Love it or HATE it. I have been guilty of using my scent as a guage for compatible people.

And Lavender is just so soothing, I have some with me ALWAYS!

anonymous sandalwood October 13, 2005 6:32 AM

it can also stir different emotional feelings at times.

 October 18, 2005 4:42 PM

I agree, I am a great fan of patchouli too! I have had it in insence sticks many times and I imagine it is even better as an oil

I had a smell a long time ago that a friend of mine had given me ( i can no longer remember the name) but it was specially blended for me and I loved it so much! I wish I had more, but I don't know what happened to my friend after graduation.

I also love lavender. I place some on a sachet and place that in my pillow for sleeping! My sis gave it to me a long time ago when she tried it and found it didn't work for her anymore.

Lavender! October 23, 2005 7:57 PM

Lavender is my favorite. The smell is calming without sweetness. Vanilla, for example, I find very calming..but sweet. I also like that lavender it is mildly antiseptic. My lotion has lavender in it, and has cured my skin problems that doctors' prescriptions could not. Lavender also, somehow, reminds me of ocean winds and smells. Maybe, lavender is envigorating and calming.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

anonymous My favorite is October 26, 2005 11:22 PM

Well, I love a lot.  I'm just turning 15 this weekend, and I just began getting into incense and oils.  It's hard to pick A favorite.  When it comes to incense, it's between wild cherry and some type of mint.  When it comes to oils, it would be between strawberry and vanilla.  The vanilla and strawberry smells like a shake you can drink!  Don't worry, I wouldn't dare myself to drink it!  The other one I kind of like is Eucalyptus.  I don't like musk myself, either.

Terri October 28, 2005 12:15 AM

Definitely Bergamot (insect bites, antidepressant, stomach upset, astringent, expectorant, etc.)

Chamomile (Roman or German - antidepressant, antiallergic, healing skin afflictions, antibacterial, antifungal, asthma, sedative, etc.)

Clary Sage (sleep, headache, pms, tonic, spasms, astringent, antibacterial, pms, etc.),

Eucalyptus (smithii or globulus) (for colds coughs, analgesic, for rheumatism, antibacterial, antiseptic, heals cuts and wounds, etc),

Rose Geranium (emmenagogue - good for cramping, muscle pain, canker/mouth sores, analgesic),

Ginger (nausea, achy pain, fever, gas, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, fever),

Juniper (analgesic, antifungal, antimicrobial, astringent, antiseptic, antiviral, diuretic)

Lemon (stomach problems, antibacterial, antiseptic, disinfectant, astringent, expectorant, anti-inflammatory

Peppermint (aches and pains including migraines, analgesic, anesthetic, muscle spasms, stomach problems),

Pine (breathing problems/inhalation antibacterial, antimicrobial, antiseptic, antiviral, disinfectant, antifungal, sedative, analgesic, anti-inflammatory),

Rosemary (analgesic, anesthetic, antidepressant, antiseptic, expectorant, nausea, gout, headache, muscle pain, sprains,

Sweet Orange (high blood pressure, and antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, fungicidal, bactericidal, etc)

Tea Tree (Australian - for healing EVERYTHING - analgesic, antifungal, fungicidal, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiparasitic, prevents itching, antiseptic, antiviral, expectorant, etc)

Please let me know if you want the latin names for the oils.  Make sure you get only organic, or wildcrafted oils and only from reputable suppliers.  Lots of suppliers dilute their oils or "modify" their oils for a lower price.  Make sure that you check for any contraindications/irritations before using any oils.

I would have also put Rose Otto and Neroli (but they are very expensive oils!)  These are the oils I would put in a first kit, most are fairly inexpensive (except the chamomile, but I think it is an important oil).

Just in case you want them here are some links for some respectable suppliers with reasonable prices.

carrier oil November 03, 2005 3:18 PM

my newest favorite scent is a blend called ' ambience' - sweet orange, patchouli, rosewood, vanilla, ylangylang, & cedarwood.

teatree oil is my standby for gargling (3 drops in a bit of warm water, right to the back of the tonsils but dont swallow) when i get tonsillitis

a friend made a sachet with lavendar blossoms and it is very potent and helps me relax and sleep.  i bought a plant on the basis of it!

i have very dry skin and just tried a sample dollop of a coconut oil that's the lightest layer the name of it has slipped my mind and i am amazed at the softness of the skin on my trial hand.  i wonder if it would make a good carrier oil?  anyone know what i'm thinkin of?

Terri - Carrier Oils November 03, 2005 10:16 PM

Dear Terri,

The type of carrier oil depends on it's use.  For instance.

Sweet Almond oil is a nourishing very similar to oil found in skin.  Good for cleansing creams, lotions/body creams, dry skin, eczema, etc.  Slightly oily feel.

Apricot Oil similar to Sweet Almond.  High in vit's A and C.  Moisturizing for face, hands, and hair

Avocado Oil highly penetrating, excellent moisturizer.  Good for eczema, and sores.

Grapeseed oil is an astringent oil.  Good for oily skin.  Readily absorbed.  Great for fascial applications.  May leave a oily residue.

Jojoba is most like the skins sebum oil, therefore good for most applications.

Olive Oil nutritious and soothing.  Mildly analgesic.  Good for eczema, psoriasis, and inflamed skin.  Good for massage, bath oils and ointments.  Dilute with another oils to reduce aroma of Olive Oil.

Peanut Oil for soaps, creams, and especially for artheritis and rheumatic conditions.  Leaves a greasy film.

Wheat Germ Oil speeds up healing. Effectively prevents and reduces scar tissue.

Rosehip Seed Oil skin regenerative, effective for scars, burns, or stretchmarks.

This info from ACHS text books.

Hope this helps!

Blessings,

Robyn

my all time forever favorite November 04, 2005 8:20 PM

Patchouli.

No question about it. The scent both calms and energizes me, makes me feel at peace . . . strong and powerful, connected to the earth. I don't know why, but it gives me a feeling of liberation, also, like nothing is impossible.

My favorite blend (that I like to wear just for the scent) is 1 drop patchouli to 3-4 drops sweet orange in water or light carrier oil. I love it! So sensual and energetic . . . I take a bath with this and then feel bad pulling the plug on it, so end up washing my delicates in the water, too.

I like to use eucalyptus for cleaning as it makes everything smell so clean and antiseptic (also because it's relatively inexpensive).

And lavender, of course. I like to put a couple drops in the humidifier in my daughter's room if she's fussy or restless, add a drop of eucalyptus if she's sick w/ a cold.

I am craving some peppermint oil badly, and also want some chamomile for massage, but need to get some bucks first. And thyme (but that one's pretty $$$$, huh?). I want the thyme for it's antiseptic/healing qualities; I was sick w/ flu a little while back and all I wanted was thyme eo for my bath water . . . settled for fresh thyme from the garden mixed w/ mint for tea, though.

Hello Im a new member November 22, 2005 4:11 PM

Hello...I just love the way groups appear when you arent even looking and so thus is how I arrived here.

I get a massage every two weeks for remedial work and I am very into oils. I burn them as well and lavender being my fav along with rose geranium and a dab of patouli.

When I have a massage I love Sweet Lemon Grass my masseuse uses. It wouldnt be the one I would choose off the shelf but this one lingers on me and smells delicious. with added lavender and perhaps some rose geranium as well....she uses different blends for different moods r what she feels I need.

Monday she used peppermint in the mix which was lovely as well as I have a huge swelling on my right buttock which causes me to limp. She massaged it gently and in the end the swelling had reduced somewhat. Its so sore I can tell you however, a drs visit is happening on friday.

I love the versatile lavender for use on burns that is amazing and for stings that is amazing as well.

Anyway I am sure i  will learn heaps here

Blessings

Here are a few of my favorite things...(oils) November 22, 2005 4:54 PM

Lemon grass seems to balance me, but nothing 'wowie!'

Once, having Jin Shin (Do? Is it the same thing, can anyone tell me?) my therapist rubbed pepperminet on my chest...that gave me a nice awareness.

But favorites for my epsom salt bath are: lavendar, lemon-verbena, orange spice (but lately not into it...is it the cold weather?)

Here is a wonderful store in L.A. (Also can order online - they had the best essential oils I'd ever experienced, tho i'm no expert!)

Herbal Products (probably herbalproducts.com ) in the SF Valley in Los Angeles...

Peace!

Lavendar!  Yep, lavendar, it's like a staple.  I'd keep shelves of essential oils if I could afford it, but there are certain ones I just can't do without, lavendar, tea tree and peppermint being gotta-have's.  For all the above reasons mentioned, I love the calming effects of lavendar.

I also love geranium, clary sage, grapefruit, lemon and orange.  And lots more I just can't think of at the moment   Love 'em!

anonymous It's extremely hard to pick just one May 28, 2006 11:26 PM

I have always loved Lavender and for many of the reasons already listed above.
Years ago I live in Australia, my little house in the outback actually sat almost in the middle of a lavender field. The farmer
in back had two paddies full of lavender. I'd sit on my front porch and just breath in the sweet perfumed air.

But if I could only have one EO and being a southern girl I'd have to pick "jasmine"
It's soft sweet smell reminds me of the long hot summer nights. It's very fresh to me and a hint romantic. It's also a great pick-me-up if I'm feeling a little down or blue a touch of jasmine oil always helps.

I blend equal amounts of :

pine oil

cedarwood oil

Use in a base carrier........

Ahh, the great outdoors!!!!

My favorites that are not-blended are

Out of all that iv'e actually used so far my favorite is Neroli for cosmetic, it takes the red out of my face when I mix it in a lotion. Also I like to use it as a perfume.

For cleaning Lavender and Tea Tree also Lemon.

But if I had to pick one it of course would be Neroli.

I thought I would like Jasmine  but for some reason it doesn't agree with my senses and makes me sick.

Mountain Rose Herbs is where I order all mine from.

I love all essential oils of course.

And my home is well stocked with all of  these assorted essentials and such.

So i will add just a couple of my favs to this wonderful subject.

For an Antiseptic I  mostly use tea tree oil.

Sandalwood and Neroli are pleasant to inhale.

As are the essential oils of hyssop and clove bud.

Lavender by far, is the most important EO to me~ It is my natural intidepressant, and the clean smell is what I cannot get enough of...

I've had problems with adult acne, and have found that Tea Tree Oil does the trick... After all those years of wasting $$ on acne medications and going to the Dermatologists!

fave oils August 11, 2007 5:04 AM

I'm new to EOs pretty much.  I've used orange oil for a while to add to citrus cleaners to give them even more of a fresh scent.  Recently started using lavender diluted in a spray bottle as an air freshener.  Great for the bathroom and cat area.  Might try some clove oil to add to my bath.  Hopefully have enough money one day for ylang and some of the pricier ones  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Hi all, new to this group, but not new to care2.

I use essential oils when I do Reiki on my family, guests at my inn, clients.  I also am a certified aromatherapist with the australasian college on the web, that took 3 years to complete.  My favorite oil is not for the scent but for my health and that is Frankencense.  I am 59 and have not been ill at all in over 10 years!!!  As far as scent, that varies with my mood, if I am down, I love rose oil, if just need to get up and go, I use mint, any mint, it really gets me going!!! lol  And I have mint growing all over my property to boot!

Thank you fo letting me share and yes, I only do use Young Living Oils, always have, always will, as they are the best and so are their blends!

I have many favorites depending on the purpose. I am a Young Living distributor and have been using essential oils for 20 years for ALL kinds of things. I'll limit it to two... As a cologne: I mix one drop each of Sandlewood, Patchouli, and either Ylang-Ylang or Jasmine. Why? WOW! For muscle pain: the blend Motivation (yup, Motivation -for all the Young Living people this blend is antispasmodic) Why? It works the best for me.  [report anonymous abuse]  [ accepted]

But I like a combination of Peppermint, Sandlewood and Orange...it gives me energy in a balanced way.  I also love flower scents such are Jasmine, Gardenia, Honeysuckle and Lilac - mainly in the summertime because they are so pretty.

I also like putting Patchouli in my diffuser...but I temper it with either white or green tea or sage for balance

Hello all October 01, 2008 9:25 PM

Hello all, I didn't notice a thread for introductions so I decided to just jump in here. I'm really happy I came upon this room because it has started up the desire for essential oils in me once again.  I used to use them quite a bit and then drifted away except for one that I use on a fairly constant basis.  Jasmin.  But being here in this room I can almost smell the scent of Cedar, Frankincense, and Lemongrass.  And last but not least Lavender.   But, LOL, I think that the first one I'll buy is the Frankincense, and no doubt the rest will follow.

Thanks for the room.

What works for my senses October 04, 2008 4:53 AM

Is a combination of Patchouli and Ylang Ylang but as my one daughter does not like the combination I am inclined to use Ylang Ylang on its own.  It just grounds me and puts me in such a nice place.  It is like listening to Sade when studying her songs do the same thing for my brain.  You can imagine how mellow and yet focused I am when I wear the fragrance and listen to the music at the same time.  Tee hee

It depends on my mood, but with the economy the way it is and the fall of rome or the USA soon, I say keep a nice kit on hand for emergency use.  Frankencense, Thieves, etc.  I do love YLEO even if they are MLM, don't care, they are 100 percent.  I know they get it from the same places are others which are 100% pure but I love their blends, especially the one for respiratory problems, RC. I sell them on eBay and am a trained by eBay educator and trading assistant.  Do not believe the religious thing(I am Wiccan and a healing witch and this is my modality of healing along with Reiki) but these oils were used in ancient times and they work. Case closed.

Thanks for the conversion chart. Very good. November 08, 2008 10:43 AM

This is a wonderful thread of suggestions, and insights.

I love the field of Lavender photograph, and can almost taste it.

Everything has been said and leaves me little to contribute. But I also love the aroma of cinnamon and not sure if it can be found as a oil.

Lavender also seems to be my favorite to relax with.  The herb added to any herbal tea mix acts as a sweetner.

favorite? March 16, 2009 7:31 PM

Impossible to pick a favorite, but I think I could list some of my fav's...it does tend to change daily depending upon need.
although...my ALL TIME FAVORITE is Ambrette Seed. precious.
She helps  me to confidently hold my space, yet is loving and gentle...and sensual! Major 1st chakra essence!
Other loves include:
Sage, Purple Brush (Artemesia Tridentada): third eye, clarify vision, meditation tool
Palo Santo: Big tool for shamanic visions, truth and wisdom/time shifting
Neroli (Egypt): even though it tends to be a little less expensive than French Neroli, she is sweeter. great for treating loss, depression and grief. a gentle love.
Greenland Moss: welcome to the land of Faerie. Never fails to arouse my boyfriend either!!
Laurel Leaf (Bay): Lymphatic protector/drainage. Aura protection, courage
Angelica: grounding, yet opens the crown as well. holds that balance. divine feminine. fills in empty holes
Champaca: floral...manifestation tool, anything is possible! Big attractor!
Pine, Pinion: from Utah. This is one sturdy mama! Resiliant, strong, overcome adversity, patient, abundant.
Hyssop: self love and forgiveness. liver cleanse, hypertension
Violet: safety, recalls warmth and nurturing, for the emotionally damaged and untouchable; helps speak truth with love
Orange, Petitgrain: Inner Child! Playful, yet mature; aids loss; good for the lungs, stamina
Spruce, White: Crown Chakra! Energizing, uplifting, consciousness
Tamarack (Larch/Larix): Brain balancing, stimulates creativity, immunity

Oh I could go on, but I'll post another day about the devas that call out then...they are a chatty bunch!

I am among the few renegade aromatherapists out there. We DO NOT blend! Each essence is individually honored and respected...we will not put our ego upon them by making "Joe-Blow's Super-Duper Relaxation Blend" Instead we layer them on ourselves or our clients as needed when the essences themselves "call out".
{This is not meant to insult anyone...it is simply a new perspective...the plants themselves were the ones who asked to be treated this way...honored as individuals. We had to listen. Imagine being forever tied to 3 or more of your friends and expected to perform in a regimented way for the unlimited number of other individuals you were expected to treat...blends provide no room for individual prescriptions that change day to day.}
Also, we DO NOT use carrier oil. We apply the essences neat to the skin. This is why it is imperative to know who made your essence, where it came from and that it is absolutely only 100% steam-distilled essence...no alcohol, no synthetics...in fact, if you can personally talk to the CEO of the essence company to ask these questions and the answers satisfy you, then you're probably in good shape!! I have tried many different brands and I would advise you to not use essences from a regular retail establishment directly on your skin (or at all for that matter!!)
There is a lot of bunk out there in the land of medicinal aromatherapy...mostly to keep practitioners and manufacturers safe from lawsuits...especially when there are so many inferior products out there. French aromatherapy doesn't tend to use carrier oil, this dilutes the medicinal power of an essence. If you've ever gotten a little hot essence on your skin (like Cinnamon or Savory or even Litsea) then you know from experience that smearing the area with any nut or seed oil will make it feel better right away because it dilutes it...if you put water on it to wash it off, it makes it more intense, because essences are hydro and lipophyllic!
I welcome all honest and loving discourse on the subject, we are all here because we love the plants and their essence. I realize that what I have put here is rather controversial and not the norm of what is generally taught in aromatherapy, but I stand by it and have the experience to back it up. Let us join together in our love and honor for the Wisdom of the Plants and Trees and continue to share their healing to our brothers and sisters on this Earth-walk!
Peace, Joy and Blessings to All!

My favorite essential oil is Neroli. I add 15 drops to my Jojoba Oil * 8oz  and  use it everyday as my perfume/lotion.  It helps calm my nerves and anxiety.

I make my own cleaning products for home use so have a wide array of essential oils that I love but yes my favorite of all is Neroli.

I haven't found an favorite essential oil yet. I bought some blends a while back and finnally started to use them again. I like to blend them in moistures. A few months ago I bought lemon oil because, as you all have said, smells so invigorating, lifts your spirits, and makes you feel confident. I recently found out that lemon oil is good for acne. I've had an acne problem for 10 years nows, started at  age 18. I think the lemon oil calms redness, and lightens scars a bit. I noticed less acne and, which is awesome! some blackheads expell out so easily when they are ready. However I've noticed it is a bit drying, which is good, but I'm wondering if there is another oil I could replace the lemon oil on some days. I feel like it's a little too drying. Any suggestions?
