Healthy Air Act January 13, 2006 10:54 AM

The Healthy Air Act would cut power plant pollution that causes breathing disorders, the dead zone in the bay, mercury contamination of fish, and global warming.

The legislative session started on Wednesday, and the bill is ready to go. This week and next, we will be circulating the bill for co-sponsors, before it is formally introduced.

Please take a moment to urge your legislators to co-sponsor the Healthy Air Act.

To take action, click on the following link or paste it into your web browser:

Background

Energy companies like Constellation Energy and Mirant Corp. are exploiting loopholes in the law that allow their oldest power plants to pollute ten times more than newer plants. Their refusal to modernize is fouling our air while they make record profits from these plants.

Power plant pollution causes severe health and environmental problems:

* Mercury: A shocking one in six women of childbearing age have mercury in their blood at levels high enough to cause permanent damage to their children.

* Global Warming: The communities near Maryland's 3,100 miles of coastline will be severely impacted by rising sea levels and increased storms.

* Dead Zone: Air pollution contributes more than a quarter of the nitrogen responsible for the dead zone in the Chesapeake Bay.

* Smog and Soot: Even after new federal standards are in place, Maryland will not meet EPA standards for healthy air.

If energy companies modernized their plants in Maryland, they would cut the pollution that forms smog, soot and mercury contamination by 90 percent. Maryland can also take its first steps toward reducing the state's impact on global warming by cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 10 percent by 2018.

Please take a moment to write your state senator and delegates about the Healthy Air Act.

Act TODAY! Toxic Mine Pollution January 13, 2006 10:47 AM

Don't Let the EPA Restrict Your
Right to Know about Toxic Mine Pollution
Stop the 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' Toxic Pollution Policy

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently announced plans to severely weaken the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI), our nation's premier tool for informing the public about industrial toxic pollution in and around their communities.

Click here to tell EPA not to weaken our right to know about toxic pollution in our communities

Ore roaster at Nevada's Gold Quarry Mine.
The TRI helped reduce mercury air
pollution from this mine.
The Toxics Release Inventory is essential:

  • It annually provides communities with details about the amount of toxic chemicals released into the air, land, and water by a variety of industries, including mining.
  • It enables citizens to press companies to reduce their toxic releases, resulting in safer, healthier communities.
For example:

  • The TRI alerted the public that the mining industry is the #1 toxic polluter in the United States (#1 every year since the mining industry began reporting its releases; over 1 billion pounds of toxics released in 2003).
  • Without the TRI, we never would have discovered that 25% of all mercury air pollution west of Texas comes from gold mines in Nevada, or that citizens in Nevada, Idaho and Utah are downwind from it -- forcing the state of Nevada to act.

TAKE ACTION!
Tell EPA that TRI isn't broken, so don't break it. Let EPA know that weakening TRI puts corporate interests ahead of the public's right to know about toxic pollution in and around their communities.† Please act today -- the comment period closes today, Friday the 13th.

Don't Drown Texas Forests January 13, 2006 10:05 AM

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has recommended acquisition of up to 25,000 acres on the beautiful upper Neches River in northeast Texas as the Neches River National Wildlife Refuge. However, private developers are trying to block final approval of the Refuge so that they can dam the river to create an unnecessary reservoir, drowning forever the best remaining bottomland hardwood forest in Texas.

Please take a moment and ask Secretary of the Interior Gale Norton and Fish and Wildlife Director Dale Hall to give final approval to the refuge as soon as possible. Then ask friends and family members to help out too by forwarding this e-mail to them.

To take action, click on this link or paste it into your web browser:

Background

The 25,000 acres proposed for the refuge are some of the best remaining and least disturbed bottomland hardwood forest habitat left in Texas. The refuge will protect vital habitat for wildlife, waterfowl, and migratory songbirds. In contrast, building a reservoir on the Upper Neches would negatively impact the very water-dependent Big Thicket National Preserve, two national forest wilderness areas, and a state wildlife management area downstream.

The Refuge will provide wonderful hunting and other outdoor recreational opportunities for the public and will serve as an economic boon to surrounding communities. The 540 National Wildlife Refuges in the lower 48 states fueled more than $809 million in sales in 2002. With bird watching and canoeing the fastest-growing nature activities in the state, East Texas has much to gain from establishing the Neches River National Wildlife Refuge.

The reservoir (known as Fastrill) is not needed for water supply. There is enough water available from existing reservoirs to more than meet the region's water demands projected for 2060. No one is proposing to bring Fastrill on line until 2045. The draft regional water plan for the Dallas-Fort Worth area shows it only as a reserve supply for Dallas Water Utilities above their projected demand for 2060.

If established, the Neches River National Wildlife Refuge will also enhance the region's primary tourist attraction -- the Texas State Historic Railroad, which brings $5 million in tourist revenues to the local area. By contrast, the reservoir would require more than $100 million to build longer bridges and could result in the closing of the Historic Railroad.

The reservoir would take many tens of thousands of acres off the tax rolls -- 30,000 acres for the lake and an unknown but probably larger amount for mitigation. If the refuge is finalized, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife will compensate local counties and school districts under a revenue-sharing program.

The Fish and Wildlife Service will not exercise land condemnation to establish the refuge -- unlike the builders of the reservoir. The Service will purchase lands from willing sellers only. For lands purchased within the refuge boundary, the Service will make Refuge Revenue Sharing payments to each county to offset the tax revenues the counties are currently receiving in property taxes. The Service will provide financial assistance to relocate those landowners who choose to sell their lands for the refuge.

Wolf Murdered on Hunt in Canada! December 02, 2005 12:23 AM

Wolf Murdered on Hunt in Canada!

A businessman Jack Burgoyne recently murdered a Wolf on a hunt
for moose.

Why? Because he lured them to his location by faking the calls of a
moose!

The Wolves mistook this hunter and his guide for moose and reacted.
The hunters then murdered the Alpha Male. Which of course, they didnít
have to do.

http://159.54.226.83/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20051201/OUTDOORS/512010331/

Once again this is the prime arrogance of man. The arrogance
that humans can do whatever they want whenever they want in
the wild without repercussions.

It is also the prime result of who suffers in barbarous hunts. Wolves
and other creatures. Hunts by those who derive pleasure from blasting
animals to pieces who canít defend themselves from weapons that
can instantly kill them.

If you would like to take action on this, please write a letter
to the editor of the Statesman Journal at:
http://159.54.226.83/apps/pbcs.dll/section?Category=xsendmail

Automaker Lobbyists Seek to Keep Oregon Autos Polluting
Auto Alliance descends on Oregon with deceptive spin to scuttle important emissions regulations

Just who are these automaker lobbyists?
The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers (a.k.a. the Auto Alliance) is a lobbyist group representing most of the major automobile manufacturers (Ford, GM,
Toyota, BMW, Porsche, Volkswagen, DaimlerChrysler, Mazda, and Mitsubishi), excluding Honda and Nissan.† They have a long legacy of lobbying at the state and federal level to prevent any significant movement forward on auto emissions, fuel economy, and safety improvements.† Lately, they have spent a tremendous amount of money first attempting to defeat, then suing to stop Californiaís landmark regulations on global warming pollution from autos.† They led unsuccessful efforts in Washington State to block its adoption of higher auto emission standards, and have now descended upon Oregon in an attempt to derail an auto emissions strategy that would encompass the entire West Coast.

KEEP HONDA & NISSAN OUT OF THE ALLIANCE OF AUTOMOBILE MANUFACTURERS LOBBY GROUP

Let Honda & Nissan know you do not want them to join the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers in lobbying to defeat & prevent Californiaís landmark regulations on global warming pollution from autos.

Send the letter below, with your polite comments, to the heads of Honda & Nissan.

Use this text in the Subject line: Yes to hybrids--No to Auto Alliance

Dear Mr. Ghosn and Mr. Cosmai,

I am writing to applaud your planned 2006 introductions of hybrid vehicles. As a consumer interested in cleaner, more fuel-efficient car options, I am pleased that the Altima and Accent hybrids will help push forward this emerging clean vehicle market. The fact that the Altima hybrid will be assembled in the United States, and the Accent hybrid may help make hybrid technology affordable to a larger segment of the driving public are both very exciting developments.

I have also read, however, that the DC-based lobbyist group for many of the major automakers, the Auto Alliance, is courting both of you to join its ranks. The Auto Alliance has continually used fear and deception to prevent any meaningful improvements in vehicle pollution, safety, and fuel economy standards. For example, the Auto Alliance recently ran advertisements calling today's autos "virtually emission-free" -- deceptive language that resulted in over 20,000 false advertising complaints. Now the Alliance is purportedly focused on preventing higher fuel economy standards and overturning California's breakthrough regulations on global warming pollution from autos among its top agenda items.

Your association with this group would severely undermine whatever environmentally-friendly reputation you hope to develop through your hybrid models, not to mention my interest as a potential customer. A clear, public "no thank you" to this lobbyist group would, in turn, give an indication that your hybrid models are not merely "greenwashing," but a genuine step toward addressing the environmental, public health, and gas saving needs of the American consumer.

I look forward to your reply.

Do Your Part to Protect the Environment

There is no question that we as individuals can make an impact and help protect the environment. Suggestions that you and your family can follow to make a difference.
Recycle! Recycling really does make a difference by lessening the burden on landfills and reducing the burden to our natural resources.

Take a walk! Each gallon of gasoline releases 22 pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. If you must drive, consider carpooling.

Do not slack on car maintenance! Keeping tires inflated properly, the oil changed regularly, and the engine tuned can increase a car's fuel efficiency by as much as ten percent.

Light up with savings! Switch three of the most used light bulbs in your home to more energy efficient compact fluorescent bulbs.

When purchasing new appliances, make sure to look for the EPA Energy Star label. These appliances use 20-40 percent less energy than standard models.

Leave grass clippings on the lawn after mowing. The clippings act as a natural fertilizer when they decompose and prevents them from occupying unused space in landfills.

Think twice before applying chemical pesticides to your garden or lawn. Much of this toxic material winds up in our water systems after it is washed into the storm sewers by rainfall.

Plant trees and shrubs along side of your house so that they act as a natural insulator. This will make your house cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter so that energy is conserved.

Install a low-flow showerhead. Showers account for 32 percent of home water use, and a family of four can save up to 20,000 gallons per year with these newer models.

Use your voice! Contact your elected representatives and tell them your opinions.

Vote smart! Research each candidate before going to the ballot box. Look at each candidate's voting history for important issues.

Read labels! Look for products or packaging that contains the greatest percentage of post-consumer recycled content. Also be sure to purchase products that come in recyclable materials.

Use natural pesticide alternatives if bugs are a menace to your garden.  [ send green star]
