Primates possess many qualities which
were once considered solely human attributes. The central nervous system of Primates and humans is organized in almost the same way, and there are similarities between the social behavior, emotional needs and intellectual capabilities of humans and other Primates. Primates demonstrate the ability to reason, to exhibit friendship and altruism, to suffer fear and stress.

UK and EU legislation has been partially expanded to supposedly protect their specific requirements in the laboratory and afford them a 'higher' status than other animal species under Directive 86/609/EEC.  The reality is, however, that this legal provision does not prevent thousands of primates each year enduring terrible pain, suffering and death in the laboratory.  . Experiments that would be unthinkable if performed on human subjects should also be considered morally unacceptable when carried out on our genetic cousins.

Researchers use primates as 'models' of human diseases on which the development and progression of such diseases can be monitored and treated. However primates, like other animals, make poor 'models' and attempting to extrapolate test results from one species to another is a fundamentally flawed research methodology. Despite their similarities, there are also many significant differences between humans and others Primates.

The fundamental flaw underlying the research of human diseases in primates is that researchers can only attempt to artificially induce similar superficial symptoms of human diseases in Primates, which is very different from studying a naturally occurring disease in a biologically relevant animal i.e. a human patient.

Primates who are removed from their normal habitat, deprived of environmental stimulants and social interaction, make poor 'models' on which to record the 'natural' development of disease or infection. Like human beings, primates react very differently to disease or illness depending on their physical and psychological states.

The reality is, despite what the research industry would have us believe, primates do not provide a reliable 'model' of the human being. After decades of research on primates, scientists have repeatedly failed to make significant breakthroughs in fully understanding the onset and progression of HIV or AIDS, cot death, epilepsy, Parkinson's or Alzheimer's disease, or cancer - all human conditions which have been thoroughly, though pointlessly, explored through research on Primates.

The RSPCA is shocked and appalled at the use of live dogs and cats as bait in shark fishing, reported recently on the island of Réunion in the Indian Ocean.

It is understood that stray animals are rounded up by local fishermen for the purpose.

RSPCA International senior programme manager Paul Littlefair says: "This is one of the most disturbing practices that we've come across. The use of a live animal in this way, apparently involving the binding of its legs with wire and piercing of the muzzle with large hooks, is unjustifiably cruel.

"Given Réunion's status as a French overseas département, we strongly urge the French government to take immediate steps to enforce its animal protection legislation and end this inhumane practice. Members of the public should address their concerns to the French embassy to help bring this cruelty to an immediate halt."

For all wildlife advocates, April 14 is a day we should never forget! The Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWCC) moved one step closer to downlisting manatees from endangered status while thumbing their noses at science. At a meeting in Tallahassee, they voted unanimously to adopt amendments to a bad state rule that sets standards for listing and delisting imperiled species. This shameful action with little regard for the welfare of the state's wildlife could lead to numerous native species being downlisted or delisted before their populations have been recovered.

The FWCC will now move forward with the manatee's status review, paving the way for the species' downlisting, regardless of how they are actually faring in the wild. Once manatees are downlisted, protective regulations such as boat speed zones could be rolled back and the public will incorrectly think that manatees are doing better than they actually are.

I've started a petition (from the information from Monkey World - see: http://www.defra.gov.uk/corporate/consult/cites-specimen/index.htm) to support the full implementation of powers for the CITES convention on endangered species (see http://www.cites.org/ for details of the convention). This petition runs only to 31st October 2005 when it has to be on the Minister's desk in the House of Parliament. Though it is intended for UK implementation, the CITES powers are in effect throughout the world by all the signees. Therefore anyone can sign it (and hopefully get more attention by the Minister).

This will give the authorities powers to not only stop trading, but also stopping people from keeping endangered and inappropriate animals as pets. Do you really want YOUR neighbour to keep dangerous or poisonous animals in his garden? Also Monkey World has promoted this to stop all types of monkeys being sold and kept as pets, which is a cruel thing to do especially for monkeys.

Dear ladies and Gentlemen,

As you have certainly read in the recent news, animals confiscated in Gelinden (Sint-Truiden) are currently held in the local animal shelter. Concerning these animals, we like to have lots of support.
The current situation is thus, that 12 dogs and 4 cats shall be returned to their previous owner, which are in miserable condition. This will be done according to a decision by the bureau of consumer protection, animal welfare and CITES. (Convention on International Trade In Endangered Species (of wild fauna & flora))

Of course we cannot agree with the conclusions drawn by the veterinarians, politicians or other employees, who have not seen the incredibly pitiful state these animals were in.

The dogs, currently kept in the animal shelter of Sint Truiden URGENTLY need help,  or else their will be transferred back to their miserable, unclean former whereabouts and owners! Please prevent this today!!

Cat welfare group starts rounding up West Bank strays

Representatives of the Cat Welfare Society of Israel spent the weekend at the northern West Bank settlement of Ganim, slated to be evacuated under the disengagement plan, in order to feed and save the many cats that have been abandoned by former residents. The group also is trying to raise funds to help find new homes for the felines.

Volunteers arrived at Ganim with bags of cat food, and asked the remaining residents to continue feeding the cats as well as give them water until a solution is found. The society fears that as of August 15, the settlements will completely empty itself of residents, and the cats will die of hunger and thirst.

"No governmental entity has been inclined to take care of these cats, and they are basically being left to die," the society said. After rescuing the cats, the society wants to sterilize and vaccinate them and then transfer them to its cat sanctuary in Hadera.

"More than 1,000 cats and dogs could end up dying after the disengagement, and government bodies are not acting with the appropriate urgency," said Revital Wreskin, the society's spokeswoman.

We, the undersigned, wish to voice our strong protest against the horrendous torture that thousands of horses, mules, donkeys and oxen are put through at the El Rocío so called pilgrimage through the Coto Doñana National Park every year. The Brotherhoods (semi-religious guilds) set out from villages in carriages pulled by old, weak and even blind hired animals carrying amazing weights, more than 30 people plus food and drink with temperatures well over 100F under the Andalusian sun with no shade, water or rest at any time. The animals can do hundreds of miles in 6 days without a stop and many die of heart attacks,literally exploding because of the effort and dehydration. At Villamnarique they have to climb 8 steps pulling the over heavy carriages! Along the way they are constantly punched on the belly, beaten over the head and body with clubs and pierced by nail bearing whips and spurs by the drunken rabble. As the animals fall dying they get beaten up and kicked to make them get up which of course they cannot do. There are no animal protection laws in Andalusia and we demand that strong legal regulations be imposed immediately to stop this other example of traditional animal abuse in Spain which is called El Rocío. Children should be taught compassion and respect for animals, may be then one day Spain will be able to call itself a civilized nation.

I was reading the local online news this morning and an article caught my attention. It was about the Houston City Pound (BARC) and informing people that they do not scan animals coming through the shelter because it is "TOO TIME CONSUMING". I was appalled by this, since I microchipped my pets so if they're ever lost, they could be returned to me. Yet, the Houston City Pound (BARC) finds that scanning an animal for what? ....3 seconds?... Is too much trouble.

I don't mean to bother or annoy anyone with this, but this is the first time I have ever created a petition in my life (I'm good at signing them!!) and so if you could please help me get it going by adding your signature, I would surely appreciate it a bunch!

French horses do not have the right to be burned or buried when they pass away.

The day they do pass away, the french owners just have to watch people take their horse....to a place where he will be cremated with no respect, with no possibility for the owners to get the ashes back (as they are not burned alone).

I had to see that in november and I don't want ANY horse to have to go through this...they deserve our respect and our love!!

We deserve the right to have at least their ashes in an urn....they deserve to be treated respectfully.

so, help us to have the right to cremate our friends......alone, and to have their ashes back.....that their remains might be treated with love again.
