Elderly dog tied to fence outside of Florida shelter

Abandoned by owner

An elderly Labrador retriever, said to be eighteen years of age, was abandoned on Friday by her owner.

News of the dog's pitiful situation was shared by the Tri-County Humane in Boca Raton, Fla. as it was outside of their facility which the dog, "Friday," was abandoned.

Early Friday morning, Friday was led inside of the shelter by her owner, described as a "well-appointed" woman. The woman told the employees that her dog was eighteen years of age and suffering from kidney disease.

Not wanting the owner to make a decision she might (should) regret, the Executive Director of the shelter came out to talk to with her about leaving the senior dog at the facility.

The Executive Director explained to the woman that dogs, devoted to their family, have a difficult time at the shelter. The sense of loss and confusion can be overwhelming.

She also let the woman know that the shelter would assist her with providing a special food for the kidney disease...if only the she would reconsider leaving the elderly dog behind.

Finally, after a lengthy discussion, it seemed that the owner understood that she should not leave her long-time companion at the shelter; that she should instead, provide her dog with the care that she needs until the end of her life.

The woman left the facility, elderly dog in tow.

But the woman had not reconsidered at all - instead, she had decided to make a cowardly move, and tied the elderly dog to a fence outside of the facility, alongside a busy roadway.

Thankfully the shelter employees saw the abandoned dog and rushed to get her inside where she would be safe.

But, there is no explaining to Friday why she now calls a kennel run home.

There is no way to let her know why she sees nothing familiar, or let her know why her own soft bed in a house she once knew, is gone forever.

The Tri-County Humane Society intends to keep Friday for as long as necessary.

Under their care, she will get a special diet for her failing kidneys and as much love as the volunteers and staff can provide.

Friday is available through the shelter's foster care program. Those interested should visit the website to learn more. The facility is also accepting donations of K/D food for the elderly dog.

Friday was abandoned in her hour of greatest need, but she will not find herself abandoned ever again - thanks to the efforts of those at the shelter who care more than her owner ever had the courage to.
