I just saw the video. Delhi was such a sweet heart.

I saw the kiss Scott gave her, very sweet.  And the "big escape" over the fence was just great!  Nothing stopped her!    She was a character!

Rose

Scott does give Delhi a kiss.  This was taken from the Delhi's Journey video at The Elephant Sanctuary website.

Delhi's Journey

What about the part where she kicks the bucket underneath her and both of her left legs leave the ground in unison.  And her "great escape" over the fencing.  She was such a comedienne.  She enjoyed every day of her freedom from the day she arrived.

bless DELHI!WE ALL LOVE YOU!

I love towards the end of the video when Scott rubs her trunk and it looks like he gives her a kiss....the way she looks at him with such love!! I'm so glad she at least had a few years at the sanctuary, she had some happiness in her life....God bless them!!!

i think of delhi at least once a day since she has left us and it makes me think of how she got to the sanctuary and her live until then. we need to keep fighting for these beautiful creatures. fight in honor of all the elephants that didn't die a peaceful death. thank god delhi was surrounded by her sisters and the love of her caretakers, not to mention the love everyone here sent her. i prayed for her everyday and i hope she felt that, i would like to believe she did....miss you

May your spirit soar, Dehli

I will never forget the goosebumps and chills I got when I saw the "our girls so far" dvd and saw Dehli fling mud and trumpet loudly as if to say "I want the world to hear me, to hear that I am free". It made me cry. You could see how her new life at the sanctuary brought out the kid in her again. We can all be happy knowing that she was able to spend some time being a kid....something that was robbed from her at one time. Love you always and forever, you beautiful big elephant.

In Memory of Delhi

Wonderful 3 minute video of Delhi, including her "great escape", "granny dash" and vocalizing.  The ending shot of Delhi tossing hay in the air and trumpeting is the perfect finish for this video tribute to her.

You left us with such grace and dignity with yur best buddy watching over you. I will never forget how you came to come to TES and am so glad it gave you more years of being free of chains, roaming the hills in Tennessee with your family, and getting the best medical care possible. You have now joined the ones that have gone before you. You will be missed and never forgotten.

Dehli arrived at The Elephant Sanctuary on November 23, 2003.  The way she moved fast on her feet was dubbed the "granny dash"

Here are two entries from Delhi's Diary:

December 11, 2003

Today was sunny and reasonably warm for December. Delhi could not wait to get outside. She did her granny dash from the barn to the sand pile and then out to the grass. She was full of energy and wanted to play. When Scott approached with an armful of hay she decided that he would make a good playmate. For nearly fifteen minutes she engaged in play behavior and she was not gentle about it. Scott did his best to be a good playmate. The problem was that Delhi is agile and kept throwing her legs out to the side and straight up in the back. Scott would tickle her stomach and then she would wiggle and throw a leg out. If she had another elephant to play with she would be in heaven, but for the time being Scott will simply have to do. He was a good sport about it.

February 2, 2004

Delhi continues to recover daily. We are seeing a marked improvement in the pads of her front feet which are callusing, regenerating into a thick pad. The daily foot soaks and Greentwo salve, along with a healthy diet and exercise have paid off. Delhi is moving more freely. She no longer has that sprawled stance she had when she first arrived and spends much of her time playing. Today it was raining, so mud became her focus. She spent the afternoon playing in the mud outside the front door of her barn. At one point something caught her fancy and she did the "granny dash" down the lane out into her yard disappearing around the hill. Without hesitation she did a full body slam into a soft mountain of hay created by a "round bale" that she had demolished earlier. She must feel good because she is playful, active and in good spirits.

Delhi's "Granny Dash" and her vocalizations are featured on the "All Of ... Our Girls ... So Far" dvd.  It's a must have.

The grins on those dear ele faces say everything we need to know about how happy they have all been at TES.  Blessings on Carol and Scott and all the other caregivers for everything they do for these wonderful creatures.
Here's to Delhi as she rejoins her sisters who have gone before.

The Granny Dash

Does anyone have a video of Delhi doing the granny dash? I have never seen it but have read numerous references about it...would love a link if anyone has it.

I am also glad Delhi found sanctuary, loving caregivers, and a loving elephant family.  She provided comic relief the day she climbed over her fence which all viewers of the elecam saw.   She invented the granny dash ..... when her quarantine time was over, she became part of the Founding Herd Family and was reunited with an old friend, Jenny.  She roamed the land as she pleased, she even got to wear Tina's shoes and best of all, when Misty came out of quarantine, they were reunited ... like a mother and daughter.  She also got to meet the latest rescue at TES, Dulary and formed a bond with her.
I feel sorry for Misty and Dulary .... they lost their momma-ele .... but the Founding Herd will comfort each other.

August 7, 2004: Jenny, Tarra, Shirley and Delhi are ready to get to know each other.

Delhi has left us

New Asian Diary entry: March 11, 2008 In the early hours of the morning while her sisters and caregivers slept, Delhi made her transition. Her passing was silent and peaceful, she passed without waking. We are all spending the day honoring our last precious hours with her; caregivers are still fussing around her, whispering quiet goodbyes. Misty carefully touched all over Delhi’s body and then gently stepped over her, sheltering her dearly departed friend. We are honored to have been Delhi’s caregivers, thankful to be loved by such a kind and wise being. The gifts that Delhi has bestowed upon all of us have been immeasurable. We are ever grateful. Namaste our dearest Delhi. I weep for our loss, but I'm so glad she's finally free of pain.
