After ten years, the UK is going to allow elephants in circuses again. Please sign petition.
Asian Elephants require connected large habitats. Asian Elephants survival depends on having access (via the corridor) to roam and forage throughout the seasons.
The largest and potentially most viable population of Asian elephants is found in the mountains of the Western Ghats where the 3 Indian states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka meet.
Of a total population of about 2000 elephants surviving in Peninsular India in various fragmented habitat islands, the largest single population which may number over 1000 individuals is found in a near contiguous habitat extending over this 4500sq km tract.
The best forage is in the Tamil Nadu section but the elephants need to migrate to Kerala and Karnataka each summer when water and food become scarce in Tamil Nadu.
Direct movement from Tamil Nadu to Karnataka is no longer possible because of clearing and development and so now the only way for the elephants to migrate from the east to the west in the dry time and return during the wet season is via the Mudumalai TIGER Reserve in Tamil Nadu, to the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary in Kerala.
However, due to habitat fragmentation this route must now pass through a corridor which is only about 2.5 km wide extending from Mulehole in Karnataka to Muthanga in Kerala.
There are suitable alternatives to this development outside the forest.
In another part of this elephant population's range, the proposed establishment of the India Based Neutrino Observatory (INO) in Singara, within the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and in the buffer zone of the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, threatens to further fragment elephant migration routes.
The use of the elephants is particularly shocking because the government had pledged to ban the use of some wild animals in circuses. CAPS is working with other organisations to continue lobbying the government, and two MPs have this week tabled motions calling on the government to bring in a ban.
Please contact your MP and ask them to sign the following Early Day Motions:
- EDM 976 - Animal Welfare in Circuses (No. 2). Tabled by Mark Pritchard
- EDM 948- Animal Welfare in Circuses. Tabled by John Austin
Last year 183 MPs signed an earlier EDM by Mark Pritchard encouraging the government to ban animal circuses.
Also ask your MP to write to Hilary Benn, Secretary of State for Environment, urging him to bring in a ban.
You can also write to Hilary Benn yourself. We know that many of you did so last year, and thank you for doing so; however, the use of three more elephants means that now is the time for the government to recognise the high level of concern.

We recently learned that North Carolinabased Lowe's Foods Stores is offering discounted Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus tickets to its customers. By promoting the circus in this way, Lowe's Food Stores is supporting an industry that causes immense suffering to animals.
Ringling has a lengthy history of animal abuse and neglect. Trainers beat elephants with sharp metal-tipped bullhooks and keep these highly intelligent, social animals in shackles for the majority of their lives. Baby elephants are tied with rope, prematurely ripped away from their mothers, and forced to perform cruel and confusing tricks.
Please use this formto send a message to Lowe's Foods Vice President of Marketing & Merchandising Barbara Saulpaugh urging her to stop promoting Ringling Bros. by offering discounted tickets to customers. Ask that Lowe's Foods never again partner with Ringling or any other circus that uses animals.
Please forward this message to friends, family members, and coworkers. Thank you for everything that you do to help animals.

Please Help Get An Animal Welfare Advocate Appointed For Oversight Of San Francisco Zoo
Please write a quick letter or postcard to help get a true animal welfare representative appointed to oversee animal welfare issues at the San Francisco Zoo. Your short note could make the difference.
Last year San Francisco was the first major city to consider legislation to reform the city-owned zoo to an animal-welfare focused rescue zoo. Had the legislation passed (it lost by only 2 votes) it would have established a much-needed new standard for animal welfare in zoos. Sadly, the zoo and Mayor Gavin Newsom exercised their political clout and killed the ordinance. However, Mayor Newsom requested that an animal welfare position be created for the zoo's oversight committee. This representative will be appointed by the San Francisco Animal Welfare and Control Commission.
We urge you to write to this commission to request that they appoint Deniz Bolbol to this critical position.
In 2004, Deniz Bolbol, a long-time animal welfare advocate in the San Francisco Bay Area, spearheaded the successful closure of the elephant exhibits and rescue of the surviving elephants to a sanctuary. For the past five years Deniz has tirelessly monitored the zoo and animal welfare issues. She's attended all the oversight meetings and again, last year, organized the effort to reform the zoo and address longstanding animal welfare problems at the zoo.
Over the years, Deniz has consistently monitored the welfare of animals at the zoo. Her perseverance and dedication to improving conditions for the animals at the zoo are unparalleled. She is clearly the person most qualified to ensure that animal welfare issues are finally addressed by the San Francisco Zoo Commission.
Please help get Deniz appointed.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
Please write a short letter/postcard urging the Commission to appoint Deniz Bolbol.
Letters must be received by next Tuesday, February 10, 2009.
You'll need to snail-mail letters because the Commission does not have fax or email.
Let them know that the animal welfare community in the San Francisco Bay Area wants Deniz appointed because she has proven to be a good spokesperson for animal welfare concerns and is the person best qualified to represent animal welfare issues on the Zoo Commission. Remind the Animal Welfare Commissioners that Deniz has twice brought animal welfare issues to their attention and they have responded positively because of the hard work and research Deniz puts into her efforts to improve conditions for animals at the zoo.
You are also encouraged to attend the February meeting to voice your support for Deniz Bolbol. The meeting is on Thursday, February 12, 2009 at 5:30 p.m. in Room 408 at City Hall. For more information call 650-654-9955.
Please send letters or postcards to:

Strathmore, a nonprofit arts center, has plans to host Ringling Bros. & Barnum and Bailey Circus at its annual festival. We've repeatedly explained to the organization that by endorsing Ringling Bros., Strathmore would be supporting an industry that condones cruelty and violence to animals. Following discussions, Strathmore representatives told us that the festival will still include Ringling Bros. jugglers, clowns, and trapeze artists. We need your help to urge Strathmore to end its relationship with Ringling Bros. and to promise never again to partner with a circus that uses animals.
Ringling has a lengthy history of animal abuse and neglect. Trainers beat elephants with sharp metal bullhooks and keep these highly intelligent, social animals in shackles for the majority of their lives. Baby elephants are tied with rope, prematurely ripped away from their mothers, and forced to perform cruel and confusing tricks.
Please take a few minutes to use this form to send a message to Strathmore President Eliot Pfanstiehl urging him to drop Ringling Bros. from the annual festival. Ask that Strathmore never again partner with Ringling or any other circus that uses animals.
Please forward this message to friends, family members, and coworkers. Thank you for everything that you do to help animals.

South Africa is poised to finalise the country's Norms & Standards for Elephant Management, a policy it describes as a "toolbox" of options for the management of elephants. Unbelievably, one of the "tools" which South Africa considers acceptable is "culling" killing elephants as a method of "population control".
Mass killing operations tear elephant families apart and leave the survivors permanently scarred. Between 1966 and 1994, more than 16,000 elephants in South Africa's Kruger National Park were culled.Terrified elephants were herded into groups with helicopters while people on the ground and in the air opened fire with high-powered weapons. Elephants are capable of communicating over long distances, and their death screams were undoubtedly heard by other elephants miles away.
Innumerable orphaned calves, who were regarded as valuable collateral, were sold to zoos and circuses, where many were beaten into submission, chained and confined and had their freedom taken and their spirits broken. Scientists are now determining that these individuals were left with lifelong emotional trauma from witnessing the violent executions of their families.
Respected scientists have condemned South Africa's proposal to kill elephants. There is no evidence that elephants pose an imminent risk to biodiversity. Reducing the elephant population is arbitrary and scientifically unsound, and it reflects outdated wildlife-management principles.

Help President-Elect Obama Choose Our Next Interior Secretary
Please help us assure our country has a Secretary of Interior who really cares about the public lands, wild horses, burros, and all the other animals who share our beautiful country. Rep. Raul M Grijalva (D-AZ) may be emerging as the top contender for the post, according to Politico.com, and we think he'd make a fine pick.
Signed petitions, cannot believe such cruelty exists in our 'civilized' society.
Hi. I'm the one that started this petition that includes a heartwrenching video of the torture. I was just curious how many of you actually were able to watch the video from start to finish. Watching the video hurt my heart so badly that even I had to stop it at a point. I could not take seeing the elephants in so much horrible pain. It literally broke my heart and made me so angry at the people torturing the elephants that my emotions were just flying. I still keep thinking that I want to actually go there and somehow put a stop to this. I know this sounds crazy but seeing those mammoth elephants in such excrutiating pain just killed me inside & everytime I think about it, I can't help but cry again & again. So, back to my main question, how many actually were able to watch the whole video? Also, thank you to everybody who signed the petition. Every person makes a difference & these elephants need our help more than anything. Thank you, Haley

Oppose sale of elephant ivory to China:
Urgent! Time-sensitive petition!
Elephants and other animals are being captured and tortured in the name of "amusement" on circuses worldwide.
Elephants and other animals have complex needs of a freedom to move around and to interact with eachother. They are very very highly developed mammals intellectually, socially and emotionally. They are strong group individuals with amazing loyalties and proof of an advanced capacity of empathy and concern towards both each other and towards humans and other animals.
Nearly all of Lucys life has been spent shuffling around the Edmonton Valley Zoos tiny elephant yard. She stands stationary much of the time, sometimes rocking back and forth, and has numerous ongoing health issues.
She wasnt always alone. Until last September, a female African elephant named Samantha shared her small enclosure. Samantha was shipped off to another zoo on a long-term breeding loan and may never return.
Elephants are among the most social of all animals. In the wild, a female elephant spends her entire life, day and night, in contact with other elephants.
The Valley Zoo says Lucy is fine where she is and that she has bonded with her keepers. They say the zoo is all she knows and that it wouldn't be in her best interest for her to leave.
But the constant 24 hour a day social contact, that wild elephants experience with their families cannot be replicated by staff at the Valley Zoo. They are not a substitute for a family or herd.
Think about it. Keepers go home at the end of their shift. And when they do, Lucy is left alone in her Spartan indoor facility until the next morning. Elephant families dont disband in the late afternoon and then reassemble the next morning. They are together all the time. Lucys keepers are not a stand-in for a real elephant family.
Denying Lucy a better life just because shes only known the Valley Zoo doesnt make sense. In fact, it's a terrible reason for her to spend the rest of her life in solitary confinement in the zoos Spartan conditions.
Recently, the zoo has also said Lucy has an infection that makes it too dangerous for her to travel.
Lucy has many health issues, but it's difficult to imagine that her health wouldn't improve if she were moved to a better situation. Her living conditions and lack of activity, coupled with the frustration and stress of being alone, must be having a severely negative effect.
In a more stimulating, naturalistic environment Lucy would be able to act more like an elephant. Shed be more active, her fitness would get better, her immune system would get stronger and her mental state would improve.
If the history of elephants in zoos is any indication, then the odds are against Lucy if she remains where she is. Foot and bone infections are two of the biggest killers of elephants in North American zoos. And most of the elephants who die from them arent very old.
The path ahead is clear. Lucy must be sent to a better facility in a warmer climate where she has room to roam and the company of other elephants. Halfway measures wont make a difference. She has to go.
If Lucy stays at the Edmonton Valley Zoo, theres not a lot that can be done to substantially raise her quality of life, or even to make it tolerable, over the long-term. The space is just too small, the climate is wrong and there are no other elephants.
There are facilities willing to provide a home to Lucy. The zoo just needs to say yes.
For more information on Lucy's plight, click here.

"In updating the draft norms and standards for the treatment of elephants in South Africa, the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEAT) has failed to listen to the recommendations of elephant experts. This reopens the door for the continued capture and training of elephants for elephant-back safaris and circuses in the country. Please Take Action now to respectfully urge DEAT officials to immediately halt the capture, captive breeding, and cruel "training" of wild elephants." by IDA
Twiggy’s 5-8-07--? Belgrade Zoo
After years of stonewalling and denial, the Alaska Zoo finally announced in June that it intends to send Maggie, the state's lone elephant, to a warmer clime. The zoo's board of directors voted unanimously in favor of the move after two incidents in June when the 27-year-old African elephant was found lying down and unable to get up. Both times, the Anchorage Fire Department was called in to hoist Maggie up, utilizing as many as 17 firefighters and heavy equipment, because the zoo lacked appropriate equipment.
Since making the announcement about Maggie's relocation, the Alaska Zoo board of directors has unnecessarily prolonged the selection process for her new home, so Maggie may be forced to spend another winter in her small, dark pen. Maggie's condition tends to deteriorate during the long winter months when she is forced to remain indoors on hard concrete floors. IDA has filed multiple complaints with the USDA and most recently called for Maggie's removal from Alaska Zoo because her life will be in danger if she is forced to remain there throughout another winter.
There is some hope that the Alaska Zoo board will finally see the light and do the right thing for Maggie. Bob Barker traveled to Alaska with Ed Stewart from the PAWS sanctuary, where they held a press conference and offered a package for Maggie that should be hard to refuse. PAWS has offered to pay for all expenses to relocate Maggie to the sanctuary and Mr. Barker has agreed to donate enough funds to care for Maggie for the remainder of her life. In addition, an anonymous donor is offering a $100,000 improvement grant to the Alaska Zoo if Maggie goes to PAWS.
Rather than being put on display in yet another zoo, Maggie should be transferred to an elephant sanctuary that can provide a stable, permanent home and the acreage and natural environment she needs to truly thrive.
Please "Take Action" now to urge the USDA to move Maggie to sanctuary before the start of winter.
All the current petitions have been signed. It's upsetting to see that 1. there are so many needed and 2. that there are not an awful lot of signatures on each of them
Thank you so very much to all that contributed to compiling the links for these petitions
I just finished signing all petitions.....Been working on them since I first joined 2 days ago!It really saddens me to see these poor elephants endure so much at our hands.I'm so ashamed to be apart of the same race these A Holes are in.And we call ourselves the superior beings.Makes you wonder!!!Anyway I want to thank you all....Together we're awesome and together we'll make a difference.....Thanks for all the hard word getting all this together....Hugs,Annie
Signed all. I took a while, but that shows how much elephant suffering there is in this world. That makes me really sad.
My comment on the Cartier/Ele Polo petition:
I'm very surprised Cartier would involve themselves in this cruel "sport." For years, my employer (a progressive organization w/ over 4,000 in their payroll) has rewarded Cartier watches to it's loyal employees on their 10th year anniversary. First thing on Monday, I will issue a memo with a request to switch to Rolex. Thank you.
LOL.... it's true though!
Thank you all!
