What defines a patriot in 2007?

| Blue Label
We just threw this question out to our members and activists at Environmental Defense, and I thought it might be a good topic for this group as well.

With the 4th of July just around the corner, it's an appropriate time to examine what it means to be a patriot We believe that every generation confronts a unique challenge that tests its collective mettle and for us, that challenge is global warming.

Here's a snippit from our new declaration. What would you put in yours?

"Today, we recognize that patriotism is not only about love of country. It is also about a shared commitment to the welfare of our planet.

Future generations will judge us based on our success or failure to be good stewards of the Earth. We owe our children and our children’s children nothing less than our very best effort."

You can also sign our declaration here.

So let me see here... this is a US-focused group?

I think I'll take that as a "yes."

That's disappointing to me...

I think I'll leave this group to the US focus, then, and find a more internationally-focused environmental community to participate in.

Thanks.

While most of our staff are in the U.S. and we tend to focus most on policies in the U.S., Environmental Defense is very active in international talks on global warming, as well as a number of other international issues. We also maintain an office in Beijing.

One hope we had when asking the question of "what defines a patriot today" was that each person could answer with their own unique perspective, regardless of where they live or what their politicians are doing (or not doing). You can see some of the discussion our email activists had here.

I hope everyone feels welcome to participate!

Well, we all have to work towards a better future for earth's environment and the global climate. Some do it from a more US centric viewpoint, others from a more European centric viewpoint, and so forth. What is important is that we all work together for a common green future for the whole planet. Some of the postings here may be a bit more US centric as ED afterall is a US based organization, but also as the host says they are open for all viewpoints. We need open discussions and debates to move forward and progress and grow. It is good to highlight this issue so that we all understand where we are coming from (not only in the literal sense This issue also highlights how truly international the environmental cause have become. It is my strong view that it is no longer enough to "think global and act local". nowadays we must also "think global and act global". We must raise this issue to a higher level. These kind of discussions help us do that. I look forward to many more interesting topics in here, both with a US centric focus as well as an international focus.
