I can't explain well. The long list of places you've travelled to,and the brief but clear "where you came from." answer, "mom"just hit a funny spot in me. Plus some long soul searching of ancestries. Indeed we came from our moms!

I have been on some of those small Coast Guard boats helping my dad out with the Coast Guard Auxillary during 4th of July. Cola really helps to settle the stomach. The big ships do not rock as much so are easy to handle.
a lot of courage (& a strong stomach!)

I watched an IMAX movie about the Coast Guard and was thoroughly impressed with their courage and stamina. The stormy seas & huge waves they often must travel through on fairly small craft are awesome and terrifying.
Also, never forget how important the Coast Guard is to ships in distress. They've saved a lot of lives.

It seems strange that a lot of people do not think of the Coast Guard as part of the military. It is true that during peace time, they fall under the department of transportation, but then they also fall under the department of defense.
I remember hearing jokes about the Coast Guard as being the shallow water Navy, which we know is definitely not true. It just seems that they are expected to do a lot more with a lot less. And in my opinion, they do it very well.

I am a Coast Guard Brat
I was born on a U.S. Air Force base in Libya, Tripoli in 1964. My father was stationed on the Currier, which was stationed on a small Greek Island, where my dad met, dated, married my mom, conceived me.
From there:
Detroit, Michigan
Cheboygan, Michigan
Grand Haven (Ferrysburg), Michigan
Cape May, New Jersey
London, England
Semeri Crichi (Sellia Marina), Italy
Cleveland, Ohio
Port O'Conner (Port Lavaca), Texas
Norfolk (Virginia Beach), Virginia
Which is why when people ask me where I am from, my usual reply is,"My mother."
