Chronic homelessness is long-term or repeated homelessness accompanied by a disability. Many chronically homeless people have a serious mental illness like schizophrenia and/or alcohol or drug addiction. Most chronically homeless individuals have been in treatment programs, sometimes on dozens of occasions.

The federal government’s definition of chronic homelessness includes homeless individuals with a disabling condition (substance use disorder, serious mental illness, developmental disability, or chronic physical illness or disability) who have been homeless either 1) continuously for one whole year, or 2) four or more times in the past three years.

Research reveals that between 10 to 20 percent of homeless single adults are chronically homeless. This translates into between 150,000 to 200,000 people who experience chronic homelessness.

Permanent supportive housing—housing linked with supportive services—is an effective strategy for ending chronic homelessness and it is cost effective.

Hi ya Kristi, thanks for posting that great site.  I put it in my favorites so I can go back and see the updates.  I am apalled at the number of homeless people in our country.  Not just singles and people with some mental disability or addiction issues, but families.

A year ago I was on a train that was pulling into Washington D.C.  and as we pulled in we had to go under this massive over pass and to my shock were families living under there with couches and grills and more to my amazement a small bed with two babies sleeping.  Almost in the shadow of our nations capital.  We are the richest country on earth and yet we allow this kind of thing to go on day after day and year after year.  Our leaders seem to have no consience at all.

As you can see this is a pretty powerful subject with me, I cannot imagine sending children to bed if they have one at all with their little tummies growelling from hunger while we spend billions in Iraq not to mention the lives lost trying to bring peace to an area that will probably never know peace.  God help us all!  Our government needs to hang their heads in shame..
