Care2 is hosting ads from General Motors promoting the benefits of ethanol from corn, as a way to achieve 'energy independence' (GM must still be denying global warming). Corn is the worst option because so much energy and so much environmental damage is involved in growing it. It is reliant on heavy subsidies to uncompetitive US farmers and heavy tariff penalties to poor third world sugar cane farmers. Jared Diamond used US corn as a classic example of unsustainable chemical based agriculture consuming valuable topsoil.

Of course, none of this would be an issue if the US used a sensible policy like carbon taxes to solve their problems.
