Please take action - federal funding for cycling
7 years ago
Here is a petition being run by the organisation People for Bikes: The website states that "Federal funding for bicycling and walking is in jeopardy. Send a short email today to your U.S. Representative that affirms your interest in safe and convenient bicycling, and asks your member of Congress to support ongoing funding for bike projects, like bike paths, lanes, and trails, and crucial programs such as Safe Routes to School, in the next federal transportation bill...." Update and new petition - urgent

I have received the following from Transportation for America today: "Dedicated funding for bicycle and pedestrian projects is again on the line. Though the Senate has agreed to extend the existing transportation bill for six months without any policy changes, Senator Coburn of Oklahoma is expected to offer an amendment to eliminate the small program that funds the lion’s share of bike and pedestrian projects. This program represents less than 2 percent of all federal transportation spending and for 20 years has been the primary funding source for sidewalks, crosswalks, bike lanes, and trails. Tell your Senators that you expect them to defend funding for safe walking and biking against this misguided attack." The link for the petition is: Please sign, if you are a US resident.

I have received an email from People for Bikes as follows: "Federal support for bicycling is in trouble, again. The U.S. House and Senate have released bills that would reverse 20 years of progress toward making bicycling safe and stress-free for all Americans. The current Senate transportation bill eliminates essential biking and walking programs. To improve the bill, we’re asking senators to vote for a bipartisan amendment that guarantees our local governments a voice in transportation decisions, allowing them to build bikeways and sidewalks that keep people safe. Take action today to help preserve the successful, cost-effective federal investment in biking. Contact your state’s two U.S. senators to encourage them to vote for the Cardin-Cochran amendment. [link is at: (You can find your senators, review basic suggested text for your email, and send your note directly from this link above.) You can read more about the Cardin-Cochran amendment here ." Please help!
