No car
Hello I just joined this group, and it is right up my alley. I sold my car in Dec 99 and have been walking or taking the bus ever since. It's nice to have that knowledge that I'm not only saving money, but helping the environment more than I can by just recycling cans. I also lived for six years without a car in Boulder, CO. That was nice because one can walk to the foothills from downtown. Now I live in Denver so I have to rely on rides to get to the mountains, but even then I know I'm carpooling.

I just got my license a few weeks ago, so of course I'm all excited about going places. But I still stick by my beliefs and dream to not have a car in the future and to move to a place where you can walk everywhere. Besides I figure in a few months I'll hate driving anyway.

That's great Louise! In case you need help getting a ride, I know denver.craigslist.org/rid provides ride sharing information. Of course, you'll want to be careful with whomever you ride. Welcome to the group. Lars

Hi Lars, Thanks for the info about where to find ride sharing. Great tip!

Louise, you are living my dream! :) My first job was within walking distance of my first 2 apartments! I LOVED it! After I made some job changes and some apartment changes, that is sadly no longer the case. Now I commute 21 miles each way, and I absolutely HATE it. Jason (my husband) and I used to try and carpool to work once a week (difficult when neither ever knew when we might have to work late), but he switched jobs and now travels in the opposite direction. I love where we live - within walking/biking distance of the public library, the grocery store, our aunt's house, the local shopping district, my hair stylist, AND our dentist. We are also within walking distance of several forms of public transport, and public transportation into Philadelphia is DEFINATELY the way to go! So it's really only my job that is standing in the way of getting rid of one car. We would still have to keep the other car to visit family and friends, as most live 45 minutes to 2 1/2 hours driving time away, but getting rid of one car IS my eventual goal!! :)
Walk, cycle, or dogscooter on a daily basis

We do have a vehicule which we use for vacations, and for long distance travel, but for the rest it's by foot, by bike or dogscooter. My husband cycle/train/cycle commutes to work in all weather...just need the right equipment and once you're well prepared you're fine. I've been a cycle commuter for 15yrs now and LOVE it. MAny of my friends think I'm crazy, but it's a way of life I enjoy and hope will never change. On a daily basis the longest cycle commute was 20km each way, so I've been lucky so far. However I did have a 53km cycle for a job interview once. But that's another story.... Cheers everyone!

we've moved somewhere i feel comfortable driving now (his gunna hate this)but NOW i really donít feel "comfortable" driving. we have enough to get me a cheap car. i'm going to tell him i want a bike trailor instead or something else i can take the kids around in. i've biked 20 miles before to see someone i wanted to see and i don't think it's unreasonable. i could bike to local transportation (i think) if i need to go into the city. thanks everyone!

i've decided after reading here and thinking about it, i really don't want a car. my husbands felt strapped because i've been without a means of personal transportation, aside from my bike for- our entire relationship, 11 years. :)
No car/and sharing

Hi, all! Just joined. Thank you, Suzanne M for getting the word out! My husband, Bjorn Tore, and I live in the center of a moderately sized town and have gone without a car since 1999. HOWEVER, when we want to go on trips, move heavy furniture or go across the fjord on the ferry (am in Norway, here) we borrow my husband's dad's vehicle.

Hi Harmony! You're welcome - glad to meet you!
Never had a car

However, a desire to continue my education is forcing me to get one. And learning to drive when I'm almost 35 will be quite a challenge! I've always rode the bus or walked to everywhere I've needed to go. Interesting group! :) Jill

Hi all, this group is great!! I have never had a drivers license which I may have to remedy (for emergencies, long distance, etc.) at some point but I take the bus everywhere even though transit in my city (Windsor, Ontario) isn't great but it's not too bad. I love to hear inspiring stories about other transit users/walkers/bikers. Keep up the good work, everyone!! Yay!
I'm really happy this group was started...

Hi,I'm a artist, naturalist, biologist, and work in wolf recovery... I ride my bike where possible..and LOVE to walk,as well as hike.MY hope for the future is building a car that does not harm the air around us. I'm from up state ny and I know all about the fumes. A word about the amish people,I respect the way they live, raise their family, and survive. Do you know there is no crime where they live, they grow all their own food, now you know they have to be healthy.Too bad so many people out there need wheels to show off,and it's too bad we can't adopt some ways of the amish. I vote for less time in cars! How many of you have been in a car and while your in traffic you get to inhale all those lovely fumes.Maybe we can reach out to others..who feel like we do ..less cars on road, less time on road, walk or bike ride instead!
