In explosive testimony before the Senate before the break, the former number two official in the Justice apartment, James B. Comey, testified that Alberto Gonzales tried to bully a deathly sick John D. Ashcroft into signing off on a secret and massive domestic wiretap scheme which had already been determined to be profoundly illegal.

And if that were not bad enough, Gonzales had previously testified UNDER OATH, that there had been no disagreements in the department about implementation of the program.  So he just bald-faced lied and perjured himself again, and again, and again.  And he's still doing it.

The situation is so bad that 56 members of Alberto's Harvard Law school class took out an ad also in the Post excoriating him for his outlaw abuse of power.  The Harvard Crimson further reports that there was NO dissent whatsoever in this from members of that class, even among those who for professional reasons could not sign on publicly. Isn't this enough?

Stand Up for Harriet Nahanee!
People across the province were shocked by the 14 day jail sentence handed down to 71 year old native Elder Harriet Nahanee in January, 2007 for peacefully protesting while inside an injunction zone at Eagleridge Bluffs. Harriet served 9 days in prison at a maximum security pre-trial facility. She had filed an appeal, but became gravely ill and died shortly after being released from prison.

A petition that raises specific concerns surrounding Harriet Nahanee’s sentencing is in circulation. It demands that our elected officials call an immediate public inquiry into the handling of this case. The petition is now available online.

Please honour a very courageous native elder by reading the petition, signing it and passing the link on to others on your contact lists. The Supreme Court of BC must be held accountable for their actions in this case. It is the duty of our elected officials to ensure that a full and public inquiry is held.

Please answer some questions re: the tiger petition for me.

My stand on it is that I would--and will, if my concerns are satisfied--sign it in a heartbeat, if it were just a case of people wanting to wear tiger skins or even people wanting to eat them.

There's only one thing holding me back at this time--and that is that these tigers are used in Chinese medicine according to the information given.

What if we had a medicine over here that cut down the chances of people getting cancer/A.I.D.S./diabetes or would help people who had gotten muscle/nerve/brain diseases such as Parkinson's/ALS/Alzheimer's and had been using it successfully when some people in another part of the world took it upon themselves to ban any more of it being made because they were afraid that it would bring a particular species to extinction?

It sounds to me as if the species isn't exactly being brought to extinction, because they're raising them for this use.

In short, I would feel much more comfortable signing a petition that wouldn't be an out-and-out ban of this practice but, instead...

1. One that will ban frivolous use of the tigers but will still make it okay for them to be used for medicinal reasons.
2. Will contain a clause that so many tigers will be bred for being put out into the wild to keep up the species along with those being bred for sale.
3. Will make it illegal to hunt down these tigers in the wild--while, at the same time, won't create a monopoly to where licensed breeders get greedy and charge unreasonable prices for the medicine produced.

Anyway, these are just a few thoughts on this, and I'd be very interested in receiving feedback in this thread so that signers will have a more clear understanding of this petition.
