Watson Seal Hunt Acquittal Overturned November 30, 2006 12:01 PM

The P.E.I. Supreme Court has overturned the acquittal of the president of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, Paul Watson. Watson now stands convicted of being too close to the Gulf of St. Lawrence seal hunt in April 2005. Watson had argued the ship was his place of residence and so the rules on proximity to the hunt should not apply. A provincial court judge agreed and dismissed the charge against him. But this week, Supreme Court Justice Wayne Cheverie overturned the decision, saying the judge had made an error in interpretation. A date still needs to be set for sentencing. Watson's lawyer, John Mitchell, said he's waiting to hear from his client to see if he wants to appeal. Please note:  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

That is very sad indeed. It's such a ridiculous law to begin with! It makes me very angry with the Canadian government.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]
