The Obligatory Intro Thread November 13, 2005 1:55 PM

This group was made to give Majka a place to come and ask about all those strange subtleties that exist within the english language, not to mention slang and other things I dont understands. I did'nt start learning english before 5 years ago so I'm no experienced linguists, but I do so love it!

It was also made because I've noticed how deeply some people engage in their own language and also how much fun can come out of it. Puns, pet hates, wordplays, weird accents, it's all welcome here.

That was my introduction ( and I hate making serious introductions). Now it's your time.

You got no idea how happy I am to see you here, Uno. Even if I'm pretty sure you joined just because you felt sorry for me.

Hi, Allie ... November 13, 2005 3:41 PM

Hope you had a good birthday, too!

No, Majka ... I joined because I was actually intrigued by the subject matter and NOT because I felt sorry for you.

Let's see....I received the testy, ergo I joined this group!  No?  Oh well, I'm here now and have a bit of a "rep" for being a Spelling Nazi, a Grammar Grinch, and a stickler for a well-parsed sentence.

(Not to mention that if I see the word "congradulations" ONE MORE TIME here at Care2, I might possibly )

If I can be of any assistance, please let me know!

(Hi Uno, Hi Majka!)

Hello Allie!

anonymous Majka November 13, 2005 9:13 PM

I'm here.  Thanks for the invitation. My specialty is oxymorons.   Is it OK if I invite two or three of my  friends?  I doubt if I can find more than that really interested in English.  [report anonymous abuse]

 November 14, 2005 12:35 AM

Allie I'm so glad to see you here! Is this the first time we meet in a group? My b-day was rather eventless really, but that's ok.

Tracy You're perfect, and then I mean PERFECT, for this group.Have I told you how much I love it when people vent about minor grammar mistakes and mis-spellings as if their life depends on it?

Lulu. Invite away. The only advertising I've done so far is to invite my friends ( all 8 of them ) so it would be really helpful if you can make some more people join.

English definitely needs our love. As time goes by it'll need all the friends it can get. As my buddy Hunter S. Thompson (God rest his soul) used to say, "Very soon dark comes."

Hi Majka, thanks for the invite Lulu, this sounds really interesting.  [ send green star]

 November 14, 2005 3:59 AM

Majka. lulu invited me. I hope you'll be able to forgive her for that someday.

When you posted you had an eventless birthday that struck me as an unusuaal way to say that. I think it's more likely a native English speaker would have said it was uneventful which sounds a lot more cumbersome than eventless, IMHO.

In fact. I don't believe I'd ever heard the word eventless. Now I'm looking for an opportunity to use it.

OOPSIE... November 14, 2005 4:02 AM

unusuaal =  unusual spelling

unusual   =  correct spelling

 November 14, 2005 4:04 AM

unusuaal: I like it better. It has a nederlander/afrikaner look to it.  [ send green star]

How do you catch a unique rabbit?............... Unique up on it.

How do you catch a tame rabbit? ............... Tame way. Unique up on it.

I'm here to answer any question you have.  [report anonymous abuse]

Well ... November 14, 2005 5:11 AM

obviously, I'll be a great help.  I thought eventless was fine.   [ send green star]

anonymous  November 14, 2005 8:45 AM

I too prefer eventless. Now added to my Care2 vocabulary.  [report anonymous abuse]

So.... November 14, 2005 11:14 AM

I have now witnessed how short time it takes you guys to accept a piece of bad english to the degree where you declare it as not so bad at all. And voila; you've enriched your vocabulary!

No wonder english is bastardized.

Martti. I had no idea it wasn't real expression. Now all I have to do is look up 'lumbersome'.

I teach English literature and grammar and love language.  Although Greek is my mother tongue, I learned English at 7 and it has been the language I have been better at since the age of 10.

You can ask me any question too.  You can even ask about that comma splice.

I vote for Ted for cohost.  [report anonymous abuse]

ummmm November 14, 2005 10:27 PM

Why is the fake Jeffrey a host?  Are you guys aware he is the fake one?  Or am I mixed up?

Co-host with any Jeffrey.  I guess this was bound to happen after i agreed with Rusty and got a message from Knate.  That makes 3.  Let's stop it there.

anonymous Hi Majka November 27, 2005 4:10 AM

And everyone...

I'm here to learn, and to help when I can.

Ted, that's the real Jeffrey, no worries.

I agree. People are all too lazy when it comes to sending out invites to this group.

Introduction January 26, 2006 7:30 AM

Hello,

Can I hide behind my monitor screen, in hopes of gaining some knowledge? I now send this post in fear of the mistakes that will be found in these two sentences.

Cheers,

Former member of spelling camp
