Start your own Community HCA! November 21, 2005 8:40 PM
Please do start your own Care2 group for the Homeless in your Community. You can make it an affiliate of HOMELESS COMMUNITY AID (HCA) eg: Tampa Bay HCA, or call it anything you like but please just create a group to address the Homeless issue in your Community and link back to this group so Care2 members can find you if they wish to get involved.
that you will be doing your Community and the Care2 members in your vacinity an invaluable service by just starting a group for them to come to and share information and ideas.
Even if you yourself, for any reason, cannot do anything further than just start the group for them to meet at, you will have done your part.
Yes, thats the plan. Set up a group for your area, put a link on this home base group on the thread started for that, so those who visit here can find your group. Plus of course you and others can keep their eye out for your potential members as well.
Care2 seems to be the perfect vehicle for this linking back.
Germinating ideas here we can all share in is going to be valuable too. Perhaps a little more cohesiveness is in order to get a handle on how best to aid the Homeless.
In san francisco where i live now November 26, 2005 6:02 AM
There are several organization, all nonprofits for the homeless. The biggest problem i see is that most of the energy and finances go toward single homeless when there are so many famillies out there with kids.
Also when you buy $1 paper Street, you contribute to help out a homeless person.
Okay, I'm going to attempt to set up one for OKC! What about a "Midwest" location?
Thing is I don't have much time to moderate groups. I just transfered many from one of my groups to another where a co-host is active daily. I want to set up the group so it will be available for any who need it and basically be there when someone is searching. Any ideas...feel free to share them with me!
I'd like to either
1) post this topic myself in my HCRCL group (with referring links to your group and this thread) or
2) to invite you to post it yourself in my HCRCL group- whichever you prefer
I feel you have a brilliant idea to inspire action on a local level- and there are a bunch of people in my group who'd be willing to do add their communities to the HCA list.
I've linked to every new community group that's been formed so far- and I am jazzed!

I`ve been a bit depressed seeing the "competition" that has gone on of late between our groups, usually by those who think I started this to be in competition. That was never my intention. If I had wanted to compete with your most excellent Homeless group I could have done it a long time ago.
When I got the inspiration for this group that could have so many extensions all over the world on behalf of the Homeless I couldn`t not do it in good conscience.
Please do go ahead and post it on your group yourself because at this point it might be deemed offensive or in competition if I do it. Plus you would know better how you want it presented there.
That's really sad! We should just all link together!
Anyhoo...Donna feel free to use the photo! The photogrpaher is actually a former homeless person. I sent him an email asking to showcase his photos and am waiting for him to reply but I'm sure he will be thrilled to know you want to use his photo also. His name on the streets is "camerman" the homeless in his area gave him that nickname. He now helps at his local homeless shelter & community. I'll let you know when he emails me back about his work. He has some really REALLY great B&W photos of his community.
Harmony, thanks for all your help for my local HCA!
PS Donna let me know if you need me to send you the jpg in file format.
I will be VERY happy to put in a good word/post on your group/s
As you and I both know (and everyone else should), it is the homeless who will benefit most from networking and co-operation. Not to mention a general atmosphere of good will and great feelings!

I would like to recommend a group, Homeless Community Aid (HCA) to join for everyone here who's interested; also to recommend in particular a thread in this group, called "Start Your Own Community HCA!".
I feel this is a GREAT way to bring action on behalf of homeless people to the local level within each community. I feel everyone who can and who wants to, should join Homeless Community Aid, and then form their own HCA group for their own area or city :

In short, I feel our two groups dovetail very nicely in serving the needs and interests of homeless people- and I enjoy friendly networking and co-operation. May there be lots more of it in Care2!
I hope everyone who forms a community HCA group for their own city will let all of us know about it so we can support it and tell others.

as a co-host of harmony's for homeless civil rights and civil liberties, i want to say i'm sorry if anyone from our group made you feel as though we were in competition with each other.
as harmony said, we need to work together and pull our efforts, ideas, members, etc. to do the best work we can for those we are doing this for ... the homeless.

Getting the homeless back on their feet
http://www.wiscnews.com/pdr/news/index.php?ntid=66328&ntpid=2
By Mark Boxley
For the homeless in Columbia County there is not much respite, but a group of concerned citizens is trying to change that and bring a homeless shelter to Portage.
Between the different organizations in the county that handle requests from people in need, about 40 calls are fielded every month from people without a home looking for a place to stay, said the Rev. Richard Inglet of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Portage. Inglet is part of a group of citizens looking into what it would take to bring a shelter to the area.
When people do call looking for a place to lay their head, there are different organizations in the area that can find them a motel room for a few days, but after that they are back on their own. To really get back on their feet, people need more time than that, Inglet said.
"There's nothing," he said. "There's nothing in Columbia County for that."
There are homeless shelters in Dane County, but for a person without a place to stay, transportation is usually a difficult thing to find, said Susan Tucker, supervisor of the homeless prevention programs with the Central Wisconsin Community Action Council. And, even if they were able to get there, the waiting list is so long, it wouldn't do them much good.

"It's always full; there's a waiting list to get in," she said. "There's a great need to have something in the Portage area."
There will be a meeting Jan. 10 to look at the possibility of bringing a homeless shelter to the area, Tucker said, but one of the things that will have to be secured before anything can start up is dedicated funding. It's not a good thing to start up a shelter and have to close it down six months later because the money is gone, she said.
Even more than the people who call, there are more folks out there who have lost their homes and are staying with family.
"A lot of families double up, a lot of people do," said CWCAC case manager Wendy Losacker. "Nonetheless they're still homeless in that they don't have their own place to live.
"I hope it happens," she said of the shelter. "We really can use."
"That would give people an opportunity to get back on their feet," Inglet said.
Anyone interested in getting involved with the possible shelter can contact Tucker at (608) 254-8353.
For Inglet, aside from just wanting to help, as a pastor, this is a part of his calling.
"To take care of the least of these," he said.

At any rate, the question that's forming in my mind is this:
If we notice that a particular place or area has no homeless services, could we then
1) put out a community care2 message? The wording of it is unformed, but it would say something like "NEEDED: Advocates and activists for the homeless in Columbia County" (for example) and then refer people to Homeless Community Aid (HCA) and starting your own HCA...
or maybe we could put a message like this in our sharebooks?
2)Additionally, should we contact the non-Care2 people in the area and let them know what we're doing and ask if they're interested and want to participate?

maybe it got lost amidst the large post, lol..

competition... sometimes a little competive spirit can motive people... of course when it is done in a co-operative and kind fashion.... I myself am not one who thrives on competion but I know many people do, and the incentative of a little 'prize' or certificate or something can 'spur' some into action...
[send green star]
spirit of co-operativeness.... I offer a little prize..... I will give the 'group' that the community decides has achieved the most positive impact, a gift certificate from my store for 50 dollars worth of custom crafted organics home health and beauty products.
I would donate it however since my store is more of a spiritual 'arts' type of shop I don't think there is much I have to offer that would really do a homeless person much good, I just don't see that a homeless person would have the opportunity to use bath salts etc... but they would make a nice 'treat' and offer a well earned little 'break' in reward for all thier hard work.
If the group finds this objectionable I apologize.... it was meant in the spirit of 'co-operation'
[send green star]
HCA groups, well any gorups working together co-operatively towards creating 'solutions' . Give it something like 6 months and then every get together compare notes and votes.
[send green star]
looks like i missed you all was doing a few things at once and was just 'catching the post at the top of my list... Sorry.... but I will let the group decide on who, how etc each 'charter' group would qualify and the time limits etc... Let me know what you all decide
[send green star]
Been brainstorming about this....though I like the idea of this healthy competition....First I`d like to see a lot more of spreading the word about our Homeless Advocacy via Care2 first as Harmony suggested. I`m going to start a thread about it.
[send green star]
No worries the offer is not going anywhere.... so once everyone get 'networked' and is ready the offer will still be here... I will send you my email addy Donna so you can let me know when you all are ready. I can not start and HCA right now... so this is my way of 'contributing' not much I know but we all do what we can.

It has come to my attention that some may have inadvertantly gotten the wrong idea about starting a HCA group.
It is a virtual group we`re talking about here as opposed to an actual offline group in a building. I mean one could do that if able but most aren`t. A virtual HCA Care2 group would be set up for care2 members to gather, discuss and brainstorm.
This main group here is for everyone from all areas of the world. An individual affiliate HCA group would be for a locality to discuss Homelessness in that specific area. I hope this clears up any confusion.
PLEASE START YOUR OWN CARE2 HCA GROUP December 31, 2005 7:25 AM
This is addressed to Everyone in this group:
If you have not done so because you thought it meant starting an offline group please know that a Care2 HCA group is virtual, not physical (unless you want to do one in the real world).
Purpose of starting a HCA Care2 group is to find others from your area on Care2 who want to discuss ways to help the Homeless in that area.
It`s not hard to create a Care2 group even though you may have never done it before. It can be fun and creatively fulfilling if you approach it that way. Just decide what geographical area ( Baltimore, Tampa Bay Area are examples already covered )you want to be in and go up above the screen here in the green and blue file tabs and click on "Create a Group" and you`re off!
I am ordained as a minister through the Universal Life Church, I am still job hunting, in effort to form my small spiritual community, which after we are able to fully support ourselves will offer help to anyone we can. If I do not end up homeless and end up independant enough I will start this in our community.
Now what you do is chose TWO webmails.. You can use my webmail if you would like to... I recommend that or http://www.gawab.com, http://www.gmail.com or http://www.yahoo.com OR http://www.care2.com's mail service... If they can access care2.com that is what I recommend them to use as one of the accounts for sure. Choose the services you want to try.. Find a friend, or someone who will allow you to use their Address, or phone number, or put the address and phone number of the current place you are staying at if you have a place, or your P. O. Box, or PMB mail box in... After you register for your new mail on another webmail service... you can put in homeless@dnatureofdtrain.zzn.com as your email.. and usually it will have you log into that email account to hit your confirmation validation. Write down your password, and your email address. Now choose another webmail. Sing that account up.. as well.
THEN... What you do.. Is go into your account information.. and put your email address from sign up account number 1, into your sign up account number 2's account information. And then you go into sign up account number 2, and put in your email address from account number 1 in.
Then log back into homeless dnatureofdtrain account and DELETE. Your confirmation emails. This way.. Your email account will be under your total control, and your responsibility... Pay attention at signing up about how often it says you have to log into your account to keep it active.
I recommend using gmail.com and care2.com as your accounts. Gmail has loads of space, and care2.com has plenty of resources, and if you do not want to use both webmail accounts. Then you can change your care2.com information.. To make your care2.com email your main email address.
the homeless@dnatureofdtrain.zzn.com account is ONLY to be used for a sign up purpose.. It is NOT to be used for your account... It is to help you create your own account. I will log into this account from time to time, and make sure it is not being used for any other purposes, and that people remembered to delete their confirmation emails.
Thank you for the invite into this fantastic group. I have always wanted to make an impact on our homeless situation in America. Now, about "setting up a group in my community". This is to get people from my community interested in banding together, to brainstorm in order that we get something going to help our homeless in our community? I'm sorry to sound so dumb...but I've never been involved this way.
Any help is appreciated. I live in a town outside of Ft. Lauderdale, FL.
Yes, just set up a Care2 group designated for the geographical area you wish. It can be a town, city, county, province, whatever.
You would be there for existing members of care2 and if you so wish you could get people in your area who are not yet members and invite them to Care2. That is your perogative.
Check out the HCA linked groups in this thread to give you an idea how to go about it.
Hopefully some activities will then evolve out of it to help the Homeless in your area but you do not have to have a physical address for your HCA unless you want to.
The group is the basic first step to whatever follows.
So happy to see your involvement with helping the Homeless. Yes, please do link back to us on HCA. Harmony, is Dixie going to include her link here to her HCA group? I just saw it and it is wonderful!
[send green star]
Your group is wonderful. Don't be shy about getting members for it. Go to our thread titled Tips on HCA groups and it will explain how to find Care2 people from Nebraska and then invite them to your group. Click on their profile where it says: "Invite To Group". Any problems or questions, come back here and just ask.
[send green star]
when i try to go to someones page to invite them to join my group, it says pending next to my group so i cannot select it to add anyone. does anyone know what this means or how i can fix it? i want more people to join my group but i cannot add them.
[send green star]
It probably means I've already invited them and they havn't joined yet. That doesn't mean you can't send them an introduction inviting them again though.
oh ok thank you so much for contributing to my page. i really appreciate it alot. this means so much to me to be able to spread the word about the very place that helped me and it helps to know where they come from and what its like. most people tell me "why do you tell everyone you were homeless. I wouldn't want anyone to even know if i was." i just tell them because sometimes it helps to know that things will and can get better with a little help and its easier to talk to someone whos actually walked that mile in your shoes.
