Does anyone ever ask you "Why do you bother?~~You can't possibly save everyone"? This wonderful poem basically answers that question:
"As I walked along the seashore This young boy greeted me. He was tossing stranded starfish Back to the deep blue sea. I said "Tell me why you bother, Why you waste your time this way? There's a million stranded starfish Does it matter, anyway?"
And he said, "It matters to this one. It deserves a chance to grow. It matters to this one. I can't save them all I know. But it matters to this one, I'll return it to the sea. It matters to this one, And it matters to me."
I walked into the shelter, The owner greeted me. She was helping Misty learn to trust. She was struggling I could see. I said, "Tell me why you bother, Why you waste your time this way. Misty's only one of thousands, Does it matter anyway?" And she said, "It matters to this one. She deserves a chance to grow. It matters to this one. I can't save them all I know. But it matters to this one, I'll help her be what she can be. It matters to this one...
...And it matters to me."
No matter what people say, you can always make a difference~~you can't save everyone, but the people that you do help, even if you do it one person at a time, get a second chance at a better life. Won't you please take the time to help the homeless in your community~~you will be making a difference in someone's life!
This actually brings tears to my eyes. When I see the Homeless suffering on the streets, in the cold, shoeless, starving, hasseled by police and citizens, I am so anguished I cannot help each and everyone of them.
You are very welcome Donna!! I feel the exact same way. It's a helpless feeling to see so many people in that situation and not being able to help them all in some way. But even the smallest effort can make a difference in someone's life!
Thanks Tracy,
The Starfish story is areally good one. Have you ever thought how many would be helped if each one of us just helped one person? We'll do what we can. Love n light, Doris

Thank you so much KitCatTiger and Doris! Yes...just think how many out there would be helped if all of us just took time to help at least one homeless person....

give and it shall be given... July 24, 2006 6:15 PM
i always liked the scripture: "give and it shall be given unto you; full measure, shaken down and running over..." this story reminds me that when we help others, do for others, we don't lose anything of ourselves; if anything, we gain. the motive that is giving isn't quid pro quo, it's a fluid exchange of synergy when the heart is in a good place. add this to the mix: "it's better to give than to receive" means that the one receiving is enabling the one giving to receive a blessing. i'm not a religious person, but i think these ideas point to a life truth. if we're in a credit/debit mode when we give, we lose something in giving; if we're sharing out of a sense of joy in life then what comes from us to give to others is pure overflow
