Causes Of Homelessness December 27, 2005 7:11 AM

We hear some people say that only the Mentally Ill or Drug Addicted become Homeless. Though obviously those are reasons, should we buy into it that they are only ones?  [ send green star]

we're only a paycheck away January 26, 2006 2:40 PM

Donna,

Great discussion topic. I don't have stats in front of me, but from my reading and experience I am sure there are many reasons for homelessness, and many different types of homeless persons. I also truely believe that a majority of Americans are just one paycheck away from being homeless. If we allow people to get away with the mental illness excuse for looking the other way, or if we allow people to use the "they like living on the street, it's their choice" argument we are giving support to those who want an excuse to abuse and mistreat the homeless. There are even working poor amoung the ranks of homeless persons. It is our resonsibility as people of conscience to help those who are less fortunate.

You bring up the excellent point of "Working Homeless" of which I could only add that many working people (not quite Homeless yet)are one, possibly two paychecks away from being Homeless themselves. Low wages (and getting lower in the Tampa Bay area) coupled with high rent (and getting higher) are two ways people become Homeless that have nothing to do with mental or addiction problems.  [ send green star]

I sent Donna a message about her new host announcement. I definitely think the Devil is to blame for both homelessness and the horrible treatment the homelessness receive at the hands of the police & others. True, we all have a free will and can obey the voice of Satan or the voice of God in our actions that affect such individuals. So Satan does have his helpers. And many are other people-not just evil spirits.

I consider many economies in the world, including that in the United States, to be greed-based. A favorite saying of mine is "For the love of money is the root of all evil." I feel these problems with homelessness are perfect examples of the result of a love of money.

Also, the sin of Pride is the worst of the 7 deadly sins. I feel that Pride not only feeds this love of money, but causes some people, including the police, to want to chase the homeless away or take them to jail-even when they're no bothering anyone. I feel that sense of Pride is also why resident of some communities don't want certain kinds of people, such as minorities, or places, such as group homes for the mentally retarded in their neighborhoods.

Very good points. I agree, it's about much more than greed, as if that were not enough. Mean spirited people look down their noses at Homeless, attack them physically and use the arms of the law to harass and take away their civil liberties.

Karen, Check out the above group which is the Care2 HCA Home Group that was started by myself a few years ago, the goal was to interest Care2 members in starting HCA groups for their geographical areas which some did. To my knowledge none of them evolved into brick & mortar groups however.
