Hello everyone, I have been finding time lately to discover all of the groups on here, now that my toddler is walking and playing on her own more, yay!

I am also the host of a group on here called Drive Aware For A Safer Traffic Enviroment. It's really small at the moment, but hopefully over time things will pick up.

I don't want people to repeat mistakes of the past.  People who fear or disagree with another group or individuals can try to dehumanize them to make it easier to justify abuse and slaughter.  By doing so, their own humanity slips away.

Let's help re-anthropomorphize everyone's perceptions of each other.

Hello everyone.  I have been a member for a while, but haven't introduced myself.  My name is John and I live in Milton, Florida.  I work in political consulting and volunteer with several human rights and advocacy organizations.  I am very concerned about human rights issues.  Thanks for letting me be a part of this group.  If there are any members near me who would like to organize events, please get up with me.  Unfortunately, in my area, there is not a large commitment towards human rights and civil liberties issues, so I'd like to meet more people with these interests.

Hello everyone!!  I have been a member from a few months, but I am not sure I have introduced myself.  My latest concern is in regard to the hate crimes being committed. Recently a young man here is Houston was attending a party and was taken outside during the evening and was beaten with a lead pipe, kiched in the stomach was sodomized with the lead pipe used to beat him.  Everyone continued to pary while this young man lay in the yard close to death. He was not discovered until morning at which time he was rushed to the hospital. The young man survived the physical beatings but not the psychological impact. He as ask to speak to the Senate regarding the passage of a hate crime bill that might help to deter this kind of thing. One week after testifying before Congress  regarding the "Hate Bill" this young man comitted sucide. I have been out of the country so I don't know what, if anything has happend to this bill. Can someone inform me of the lates news on this importance case.

I'm really happy to see you all here Human rights are a very important issue for me.

Even though sometimes the priorities differ when it comes to human rights, everyone here cares very deeply about human rights. So just try to remember that, and if someone disagrees with you on something, don't assume they don't care about human rights.

Hello, everyone. My name is Rhiannon, and I live in southwestern Virginia. I have a BS in Ecology and will be starting my master's in Environmental Science this fall. Hi. My name is Robin. I am a wife and mother. I live in Michigan but am from California. I am a strong believer in human rights for all people everywhere. I do not think that only those in power have these rights. I believe that we all need to make sure that everyone has a  life worth living and are able to feel safe, heard and cared for.

My name is Karen and I'm from Estonia (it's a small country in Eastern Europe - I'm saying it just in case, as I have noticed that many people don't know where it is )

I have a BA in law and I will start my Master's studies in September. I would like to write my Master's thesis on the legal protection of human rights, mainly with the focus on refugees. And I would like to work in an international organisation (like the UNHCR) in the future

I'm very much looking forward to participating in this groups discussions on various aspects of human rights.

Thank you,

P.S. I read through the list of human rights are they supposed to be for all countrues or just Americans? I only ask because in Nigeria we do not get a lot of those things. And we dare  not complain, especially to the government or terrible things will happen and not just to the person complaining but to their loved ones as well.

I joined this site due to my own involvement with a lot of the petitions I sign that have been sent my way.

I believe in Human Rights for all peoples, and I am a staunch supporter of the "Bill of Rights" in my own country.

I believe in Unconditional Love, as I  know it to be the only way to world peace.

I believe in Protecting the Earth and all of her creatures, not just humans, as we all must share and are apart of the same interconnecting beams of light.

I believe in Education for all peoples, for illiteracy begets poverty, and a wealth of knowledge has far more value than a wealth of dollars.

I live in Phoenix, AZ, U.S.A. I am 42 years old, I have two children that have been taken from me by my ex husband due to my spiritual beliefs.

I have been reading, absorbing and understanding your group since joining and thought it time I introduced myself.

Merry Part then, until merry we meet again.

Respectfully,

I'm Tami, I suffer from PTSD from my first abusive marriage, growing up a very lonely child, my parents had their own business, I learned the unconditional love of a horse.  He saw me through thick and thin, was my confident (he never worried and I got it off my chest), and my best friend.  His name was Royal Flight.  Dave and I were in agony over his death.  Then, we were lucky enough to find a shetland sheepdog, Frisky.  I love Dave dearly, but, there was tremendous comfort in Frisky.  I suffered a bout of PTSD, (from my first marriage to an abusive, alchoholic, undercover cop) and he helped through the hard times when Dave was not home.  I swear he knew the exact thing to do to help me through the panic.  He lived a long happy life, and tried to stay living even after having terminal cancer.  He always thought of me first, as did Flight, and his suffering second.  After his death, we found a loving lap dog shetland sheepdog, Bandit, who only wanted to love and be loved.  That help ease the pain over the loss of Frisky.  2 years ago, I found an abandoned 1 week old freezing kitten.   Dave and I were delighted he survived.  He had some injured an eye, and it did not open until he was 2 months old.  Like my self, he has physical and mental scars.  He has taught me the life is not about the pain and the past, there may be scars, the the future is much better, all you need to do is let go and live.

The red text was added to the homepage after things happened inside the HRN that made the hosts deem the red text necessary.

No, no-one else have commented on it, which naturally made us believe there was nothing wrong with it... perhaps people don't dare So thank you for pointing it out. All that has been said in the red pinned threads as well, so I think it can be removed from the homepage.

I assume the "slug fest" is somekind of Swenglish. I don't know - neither Swedish or English is my mother tongue, even though I can express myself with both

But you are welcome here, just as [most] everyone, and I apologize for the "cold shower" at the door.

Hello to all. I've just joined the Human Rights Network so I figure the best way to start is with roll call.

I'm going ahead with this despite the unpleasant vibes your opening message communicates, but more on that later.

I am an ex-New Yorker and live in Paris. I've lived in France for over 30 years, so communicating in French is almost more natural for me than in English. Glad for the chance to join an English-speaking community on Care 2. I don't have to specify that I'm a woman as I would in France, where Jill more closely ressembles a common boy's first name and I get a lot of mail (male?) addressed to Mr. Jill Gabreau.

I haven't yet joined any other groups and do not as yet have any friends on the Care 2 network.

I have commented on news articles when I have had relevant info to share and the desire to participate in the discussion and/or set the record straight.  The latter was the case for an article claiming that Denmark is happiness-on-earth. I had just read an article about post-Sept 11th legislation pushed through by the ruling Danish right that has set up an administrative obstacle course, with nearly impossible-to-meet conditions, for anyone who wishes to settle in the happy kingdom...including the foreign spouses of Danes. The result has been distress and heartbreak for these couples, who hoped to settle in Denmark. The Danish spouses can of course live in their homeland, but without the spouse they love and can't get residency rights for.  The only alternative they've found is living in more person-friendly Sweden, since they can commute from Malmo to their jobs in Copenhagen.  Saving their jobs may be a practical solution, it does little to mend a broken heart or cure a terminal case of homesickness.

The story also shows how infringement of civil rights as a post-Sept 11th phenomenon is not limited to the USA.

I feel very strongly about issues of human rights and injustice. The planet, unfortunately, abounds in them! Just an example: the multinationals who have set out to "patent" nature; who have a sort of secret police to intimidate farmers that might have another view; who push non-replenishable seeds on farmers, condemning them to a tragic cycle of ever-growing debt and poverty, ever-greater amounts of pesticides to buy in vain attempts to save ever-dwindling harvests. Who do this with the support and backing of governments! Remember the rash of suicides among Indian farmers not so many years ago?

A great victory came about this summer when Coke and Pepsi were outlawed in India. Indian farmers had been complaining for years about these giants using up the limited quantities of ground water for the production of their soft drinks to the despair of farmers who had nothing left to water and irrigate their crops with.

These problems overlap problems of ecology and economics, politics, too, but this type of abuse of power and the seemingly fruitless efforts of the weak to defend themselves really make me furious.

Just a last remark:

It's a little bit strange to access the Human Rights Network home page and be immediately 'greeted' by that billboard text with its very unfriendly tone. I don't know who decided on the placement and the "let's get tough" wording of this text, but it is certainly, to me at least, a strange way of welcoming supposedly like-thinking people, motivated by issues of human rights. Starting right off by being harsh, unpleasant and threatening (ay,ay!! you said "no name calling"! Have I already broken the rule?) .

I quote:

This group is not an all-out-full contact debate heaven for slug-fests. Here we play by the CoC and ToS, and if you cannot respect yourself or your fellow members enough to respect this, then you do not belong here, and you will be removed. You will be given one warning then you will be removed for a week - re-offend and you will be permanently blocked.

That there is little reason to have much faith in human kind may be a fact, I am still really shocked that the first collective text on the group billboard should say this, in this way, to new members! I've barely arrived and already it appears I may "not belong" and will be "removed"!

Gee, uh, well, hi and nice to meet you, too....

Why are you expecting the worst from people who have a declared interest in human rights? Have you come across so many uncivilized individuals on the site?

By the way, what kind of language is "slug fest"? I can figure out what it means, but never heard it before.

In any event, I find it very difficult to punch out the letters at my keyboard wearing boxing gloves. That tough language is the kind  I'd save for my opponents not my sympathizers.

Has no one else commented to the 'welcome' committee?

Hi, I'm Elainna, born in the USA, raised in California and a citizen of Canada. I left the USA over 30 yrs ago, during the Vietnam war. Back then we had to worry about a sinister network of communists, supported by the Evil Empire who were determined to eliminate the free world. Now we have to be careful of another sinister network of terrorists, most of whom are Islamic extremists who want us It seems like nothing really changes. I joined Care2 for a very simple reason. I wanted to save our environment. I'm also concerned with trees and andand most living creatures. I want us & them to live in harmony on our beautiful planet.

DAN 1's Introduction

Hello everybody. I support most Human Rights. The main ones I am focusing on is related to New Tribes and Old Tribes and all of the Tribal Lifestyles that have lived and are living on Mother Earth. The city states of America and other capitalist entities are crowding out most of the other Human lifestyles. I want to see this trend reversed and a new balance initiated in which all worthy lifestyles can exist in harmony on Our World. This is at the core of what this dreamer is all about.

Presently and for the last several years I am involved in the Ghostchild movement of Turtle Island, my own path called Narbarism and many other ways of commitment to build a Better World. The fair and equatable establishment of the lives of Indigenous Peoples the world over is is one of my major concerns. Land must be returned to them for them to practice their way of life. Profiteering interference in their areas of sovereignity has to stop. The planetary Human population must be reduced to make this work.

A path and way of life must be established for disenchanted individuals of little discernable ethnic heritage to be able to form Family, Clan or Tribe in a new beginning of cultural construction. This is the core of the New Tribalism Movement that is destined to harmonise with the various lifestyles of the Old Tribes in a broader base of cultural freedom on Mother Earth. Narbarism is one path of the NewTribalism movement. We are also called the "NarBar Way of the New Sacred White Fire of the North". There are also "other ways" of the New Scared White Fire of the North. We are in basic foundation stages right now. Looking for good hearts and minds to help us build culture and develope all the aspects of culture. To propose, to consider what is proposed and vote.

Out of this basic foundation would emerge Our first Tribe, the "HamaNar" (The People of Hope".) This whole process is painfully slow due, in part, to people already being very busy with their lives and involvements and prevailing Human apathy of those who care only about themselves. But, since this effort is fun as well as important to me, I will never give up. It is fun to build a new culture...religion, philosophy, mythology, language, lifestyle skills (practical things we have to know to live an alternate lifestyle outside of imperial capitalist social structure.)...and other things as well.

My profile here has more to see about me and you can come look at Us and message me at http://www.narbarism.org/forum/ and

http://www.phpbbcity.com/forum/?mforum=ghostchild  (here I am running a temporay cyber camp forum for the Ghostchild People. Their main web site got trashed by their hosts and are in the process of rebuilding.

Also, We are at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/narbarism2 , but here is fine too, because I will begin to come here daily on my patrols.

Well. I guess this is enough of an introduction for now. I am open to questions, comments and criticisms and wish all of you happiness and discovery of Better and More...of that which is worthy.

Respectfully Submitted,  DAN 1 of the First TriNar of Narbarism, Honorary Ghostchild Elder.

Hello From Malaysia:)

Hi..my names Ross Ariffin and I am living in Kuala Lumpur/Malaysia.A country which has 125 detainees in its Internal Security Prison (ISA). something. This country has its draconian laws where if you criticize its government too much or in a manner that makes you a security threat....youre hauled in and held against your will without any charge(s),lawyer representing you, trial and most of the time cut off totally from all family and friends...FOR YEARS on end. I find this totally draconian and against all laws of human rights.

Countless letters and emails have been sent to the previous and current Prime Ministers to no avail They read it but they dont care!
I believe that Malaysia is on Amnesty International's watch list and even they have demanded on numerous occasions that the govt come clean and release those held against their will if there are no charges or proof of guilt. Doesnt it remind you of the Facist/Nazi concentration camps?. Lets not forget the merciless brutul beatings by the Police/FRU personel a couple of months back right front of the KLCC (Petronas Twin Towers) in Kuala Lumpur of a few families inclusive of women and children who were peacefully protesting against the hike in petrol and electricity prices.

Having mentioned all that I am honoured to join this group

In the 1930's, someone in Congress, I forget who, referred to "The 47 {at that time} States and the SOVIET of Washington!"

I am here because of Doris and Donna D. and Carol S.

I am very concerned about Human Rights issues and the trampling of those issues whenever another coup is sponsored in Latin America by [Yanqui-go-home!]  American govts. {Not ONLY the present Horror Regime!}

I am concerned that present govts. labelled "Leftist" by the U.S., be continued to be allowed to develop in their own ways towards Democracy, as U.S. interference has always proved the opposite of beneficial. As well as developing their OWN economies for their OWN people's benefit; and not economies tied to the U.S. economy and benefitting the U.S. rich at the expense of the Latin American poor.

Close down Guantanamo; not ONLY the prison, but the whole U.S. Naval base; which has NO BUSINESS AT ALL being on CUBAN soil!!!!! Close the notorious School of the Americas. STOP INTERFERING IN ELECTIONS AND MILITARY COUPS! This is what I have long wished for MY country to do! B Mutiny T

Hi ... Sapan Rinpoche here ...

Hello, I am Sapan Rinpoche, from Boulder County, CO, USA ... living in the "Jewel of the Front Range," Lyons, Colorado ... about 14-miles North of Boulder [home of CU, etc.] in the foothills of the Rockies.

I honor and work with ALL groups that I can, with respect to Human Rights. I am presently most concerned about the status of the Voting Rights Act that a coalition is working hard on right now, in the face of vest-interest-driven and inept U.S. Congress. We must all continue to, as our time permits, weigh in on all fronts with regard to Human Rights ... for ALL on this fragile and tumultuous Planet. Thanks, Olav, for the recent wake-up calls and invite to this forum. =sapan=

Just realized I'd not answered roll call.  Wonderful to see how many countries and US states represented here.   Very concerned about all human rights abuses...In case you didn't know, Cuba has been elected to the new UN Human Rights Council (had to ditch the old commission because of continued US bribery and threats) ...the US couldn't be a candidate 'cause they are still sanctioned for abuses.

I'm Janice from California and have been a fence post sitter for years.  I care about people but find two causes often contradict each other.  Perhaps my greatest concern is children, peace, and the right to be heard without being condemned.  I am certainly liberal in my voting but appreciate the insight from people who focus on information...even when I disagree with their politics.

yay for the high school kids
Hi- I want to share a thing that made me very happy this morning.  I heard kids shouting outside in the rain and I first thought that it had to do with a game and school team spirit.  Then I realized that it didn't seem right that it would be in the rain in the morning.  So I peeked out of the window..and saw a large group of high school kids marching towards downtown.  This is a little city-town in the valley of California amongst many orchards/farms/ranches.  There is a strong conservative public here.  and rednecks, too.  Hunters, exploiters, etc.  Rarely is there a protest.  But within the little urban area live many people of Mexican origin...many immigrants or descendants of such.  The last time and only other time in the past 2 1/2 years that I've been here the only protest I ever saw was to legalize immigrant Driver Liscences.  I got joy from that one.  But now, I was just so happy to see the high school kids marching along towards downtown surrounded by police. The school administration actually encouraged them to go.  They were opposing the possibility of the Senate voting to pass the law to penalize illegal immigrants by making it a phelony.  Ceasar Chavez is a hero here, even if iI haven't heard him spoken of often.  Well, before now, only when I spake it!  The town I live in is not completely submissive and apathetic.  YAY!!!!!!

It goes without saying that The Human Rights Network has many fine and caring members.

It would be wonderful to see our members take a moment to announce themselves here and say what Country they hail from so we can get an idea of just how widespread our Human Rights concerns are.

I`ll start by saying that my name is Donna and I hail from Hurricane Country, Florida, USA.

I`m honored to host this group as I have deep concern for many of the Human Rights Issues featured on this group.  Paramount issues for me personally are Prisoner Human Rights, Death Penalty Abolition, Poverty and Homeless Human Rights.

Please sign in and tell us the Human Rights Issues of most concern to you.

Hello. I joined a while ago, but I am just now getting to posting. I am sorry.

I am Maria Angela Grow. I am 51. I live in Cincinnati, Ohio. I am married to a wonderful man named Tom. We are both disabled, but we want to do what we can for human rights, animal rights, the environment, etc.

I am neither totally liberal nor conservative. I make my own judgements about each issue or situation. Basically, I just want to see no living creature harmed. I want justice, insofar as it is possible in this world, and I want to uphold the rights of the defenseless, who can not defend themselves, whether that is a mistreated animal or abused women or mistreated minorities, or the poor.

I am glad to get to know all of you.

I believe in Human Rights - to all - even criminals - and one of the rights, in my mind, is the right to get fairly punished for breaking the law.

Hi Everybody,

I'm a 44 year old mother of 4 from Staten Island, NY  USA.  I work in market research (finding out what people think of various products and services).

From what I have seen over the years in this city, human rights is just as much a local issue as it is one between countries.

Coyote Chasing Hawk Trax

Greetings and Saluations everyone.  Where do I come from?  My favorite answer is that "they told me to tell you I come from Earth."  When I answer this way it makes you think I am from here and diverts all the questions about my true origin.

I reside in Massachusetts with my two sons and my otter Queen wife, Jenny.  I am a spiritual saladist who tries to appreciate and apply every possible avenue of freeing my spirit, most importantly anything which leads me and it to defy gravity and escape the 5 sensory boundaries which I consider to be the biggest illusion of them all.

I write and attempt to live poetry, as well as finding gifts in every moment of my life and I practice letting go of faultfinding, judging, or wasting energy on people and behaviors that would increase my spiritual gravity and plummett me back into humanly defined limits, boundaries, walls, and lower plains of existence where I cannot see the magic of the moment evolving in front of me.  This is the most important moment in my life, this is the most important day, and all of this moment and what I do in it is inextricably connected to every possible future for all who ride this adventure called life with me.  I hope my ripples may increase the sprirtshine and devour the nimbus shadows that block its magical rays.

I am ultimately just a confused coyote chasing the fresh trail of a red tail hawk, nose to the ground and deep into the scent of fresh tracks.

And I am so glad to be in such amazing company and incredible creations, Wow what incredible works of art I am surrounded by.

Warm Fuzzies to all of you,

Ziggy

the only indication of the possible parameters of that agreement are those in the law. The law clearly allows the taking of additional land by eminent domain for "ancillary facilities" described as any unrelated industrial, commercial or agricultural use that benefits the corridor (Sec.227.082 (d)), as well as another section which allows adjoining right of way to be leased to a private entity for any purpose, including billboards, hotels, restaurants and gas stations (Sec.
370.172(a)(2)). Under the current law "tolls, fees, fares, or other usage charges are not subject to supervision or regulation by any agency of this state or another governmental entity" (Sec. 370.172(d). As state land, the utility corridor and its water pipelines will be exempt from local ground water conservation district limits, and currently there is no law in place prohibiting that water from being transported outside of Texas.

Regardless of what TxDOT wants or doesn't want, they are negotiating a contract with a corporation that is in this for its profit making potential, and the profit making potential lies in the full exploitation of the law, not just collecting tolls on the road. Texas has never entered into this type of agreement, or negotiated this type of agreement with a private company. And yet we are rushing to complete this one. We have to ask ourselves why? If the legislature does not make any changes to the law during this session, then TxDOT and the Transportation Commission will proceed with their negotiations under the current law. There will be no further opportunities to amend or affect the outcome. Fifty years is a long time to bind the citizens in such a hurried manner.

There are opportunities for the Legislature to change the law during this session. HB1273 has been filed by Rep. Lois Kolkhorst, et al, to amend some key provisions of the law created under HB3588. Several bills have been filed to limit the taking and transportation of water within the state, including HB1794 by Rep. Glenn Heger.

Solutions to our urban traffic problems need to be addressed. I am not a transportation expert, just a resident of Texas, but I do know that the Trans-Texas Corridor, as proposed, is an enormous project that will change the face of Texas forever. It will scar our rural landscape, impact our wildlife, and damage our agriculture and ranching industries. These are the fundamentals of life in Texas, and such an undertaking should not be made in haste.

Linda Stall

Linda Stall is a legal secretary in La Grange, Fayette County, Texas, and is co-founder of CorridorWatch.org, a non-profit organization challenging the wisdom of the Trans-Texas Corridor. CorridorWatch.org is not affiliated with any candidate or political organization.

I am here somewhere LOL and Noel is right about the human rights stuff here in my grand state of Texas and also the liberal closet thing... hummmmmm Need any more liberals in your neck of the woods Noel LOL I am looking to relocate in 2 years time getting out of this wonderful Closet state.. And by the by Perry is starting to get bashed by conservatives hell hath truely frozen over here LOL

The following is an editorial about the proposed Trans-Texas Corridor. Perhaps you've heard of it...a 1200 to 1500 foot wide swath cut across Texas from north to south. This looks like it's going to be one of the largest and foulest cases of eminent domain abuse in history because it is going to be (largely) a for profit private development that will use eminent domain to take the property from current property owners and give it to the developers.
You'll have to scroll down to read the editorial. At the top I've included a statement from my mother. For those of you who don't know, my parents are very politically active conservative Republicans. I am frequently fond of saying that they are slightly to the right of Rush Limbaugh. When they dislike a Republican leader you can know with certainty that there is something very wrong with that leader. When they are willing to support a protest against that leader or something he's doing, well....HOLY %#&!*%!!!! he must be really bad. It's a pity that my parents didn't figure Perry out sooner or they would have joined me in voting against him and his dirt-bag friends. I think we should do this the California way and re-call the bastard.
I don't normally do this, but please send this to every voting age Texan you can.
Thanks,
GregZilla
******************************************************************************
(My mom's e-mail)
I will never vote for Perry again. A friend of mine is retired from the Seed Lab here in Giddings - it's run by the Texas Dept of Ag.....and you might remember that Perry was the Sec. of Ag. in Texas a few years back. DeAnn has little affection for the man. Thought he was an awful Ag. Sec. He only thinks of the glory he will get when he does these things (toll roads and corridors) and has no interest in us little people. The corridor is set (?) to pass through Lee County - not sure which side of Giddings - but if Perry manages to see this through - we know many people who will have their land taken from them - maybe Max, Kim, Roy, Rick, Timber and Grace - to say nothing of our neighbors up and down 141.

I sent emails to all the people on the transportation commission. There's going to be a huge protest in Austin on May 5 at the state capitol building.

Mom

This is not only important to the people in our area (Lee County) where this corridor is proposed to take our land but should be important to all Texans. Please, please call or write to your legislators and voice your opinion and ask them to support HB 3363 which places a 2 year moratorium on the corridor. I've included some links for you. Please go on and read this editorial which does a great job of telling just what will happen if Gov. Perry has his way. MH

I’m from Budapest, Hungary.

I, too, want to help alleviate suffering. I hope I’ll actually be able to do something about poverty-related suffering. It’s such a big problem that seems so simple (simple, not easy) to solve—but I’m probably just naive.

My other big focus is on the rights of children. I don’t mean particular children’s rights, I mean general human rights. Children should have the same human rights as adults.

I find this cause especially important because it’s so little-known. In the case of children, many human-right violations are seen as acceptable or perhaps even desirable. For example, forcing children to learn a particular set of knowledge, or to become particular kinds of people, is a violation of their freedom of thought (and the means used toward this end are often violations of other, more palpable rights)—yet compulsory education is even included in the declaration of human rights.

That’s why I’m so glad for groups like Voting Rights for Teens(http://www.care2.com/c2c/group/votingrights4teens) , Radical Unschooling (http://www.care2.com/c2c/group/) unschoolersas well as for Antispeciesism (http://www.care2.com/c2c/group/antispeciesism) and Everyone Matters (http://www.care2.com/c2c/group/), two groups where anti-ageism is one of many causes. If you know of any other anti-ageist groups, please tell me, I’d be very interested.everyonematters

Many thanks in advance,

Hi Everyone, I am Felisa.  Hats off to you lovers of human rights!!!
I am an avid participant in anything to do with human rights in the U.S. and abroad.  I live in Massachusetts but am originally from New York City.  My mission is that all will be treated fairly and the world is more peaceful to live in.  However, it starts with some milestones along the way.  Being a mother of 3 ladies it imperative that I speak out for what is right towards all.  It is very uplifting reading the post here today!!  Keep up the fine work you all are doing and wish you all a great week.

*Hi* everyone. I believe in human rights and civil rights, and constitutional rights. Mental patients rights,  rights of oppressed, homeless, and poverty stricken people. And all basic human rights, freedom of speech, freedom of expression, freedom to petition grievences to the government, and freedom to conscientios objection....

Basically I believe people have the right to live the way they choose to, as long as they are not a threat to other people in society.

Off Topic For Beth - Why The Texas *shudder*
11 years ago

Beth - there are some positive things that have come out of Texas, and some nice places in Texas, however I didn't really enjoy living there, mostly due to my more liberal leanings (not that all Texans are conservatives, it's just that the liberals tend to be a little in the closet about their views in most parts of the state).

But my shudder was related to  it's criminal justice system which is, well... I don't really know how to put it delicately. Suffice to say, Texas is #1 in executions, and considering the group I host, my issues with Texas and their record on human/civil  rights  when it comes to the death penalty are as big as the state itself. They've already had 18 executions this year, there's at about  5 planned for Nov., at least one  1 in Dec. (a woman)... And the man in charge is Gov. "I'll never commute a sentence" Perry. Grrrr.

Sorry for the mini-rant.  I hope that explains things and you're not offended. It's nothing against you personally.

Ok, Now I'm Convinced

Donna is trying for Care2's longest discussion thread record.

Obviously, I'm Noel. I live behind the Redwood Curtain on the coast of Northern California in a small ultra-"liberal" university town, (but I grew up in Southern California and have lived in the scary states of Montana and *shudder* Texas).

Human Rights concerns... where do I start? OK, Criminal Justice/Prison Reform/International Justice/Ending Torture, Disability Rights, Education, Free Speech, Religious Freedom, Women's Rights (Abuse Issues, Reproductive Control, Equal Rights and so on), Gay/Lesbian Rights, Racial/Ethnic Equality, Poverty, Health Care, (I'm sure there's some I left out).

And then there's my little "pet project", Abolishment of the death penalty.  For those of you who don't know, (excuse the self-promotion), I host a little group called Citizens Against The Death Penalty. I'd be delighted if you'd join.

Hello, my name is Mary and I live in San Antonio, Texas. I have worked for the state in some capacity for the last 21-1/2 years.  Six of those years was as an advocate for the rights of the developmentally delayed/physically challenged and the mentally ill.  Although, I work in another department now, I still advocate for these individuals' rights in addition to world human rights.
ROLL CALL!
