For some reason every single poll on care2 looks like it was written by a primary school student. So I thought I'd start collecting them.
Today's poll:
How much allowance do you give your kids?
$5-10 per week. $20-30 per week. $40 or more per week. I don't give my kids an allowance. I don't have kids. Other.
Apart from other, there is no option for parents who give their children less than $5 per week. What kind of message is that sending? It's the kind of message the advertisers would approve of.
Can you get any more vacuous than this poll? There is just as much variation in the media as in the general public - probably more variation. Two people could give the same answer and mean the different things.
How bad do you think global warming is?
Worse than the media makes it out to be. Not as bad as the media makes it out to be. Exactly as bad as the media makes it out to be.

Here's another one - what useful information could they possibly gather by asking ignorant people a technical question like this?
Which of the automotive alternatives do you think is most viable and deserving of government incentives to produce affordable vehicles?
Electric/gas hybrid. Electric. The compressed air vehicle. Biodeisel. Hydrogen fuel cell. I don't think the government should provide these kinds of incentives.
This one appears to be targetted at advertising revenue:
What do you hear during your commute?
Music or talk radio. The news. Audiobooks. The other commuters in my carpool. The wind in my ears as I walk/bike. I am usually on the phone. I don't commute. Other.
Another silly one. If someone deserved forgiveness you would have nothing to forgive. You can only forgive someone because they deserve punishment, because they don't actually deserve forgiveness. Forgiveness is about rising above an eye for an eye. It is about rising above what they deserve, not denying that they deserve it.
Does everyone, no matter what, deserve forgiveness?
Uno, if you don't know what Freediver's talking about I would be surprised, but if you really want to know I'll tell ya...
Anyway, it's right that a lot of the polls are stupid. If I feel like wasting my time with them I do, if not I don't. I have often wondered who writes them, though.
I think Jeff visited a primary school once to tell the students what he did for a living. As part of the festivities he got every kid in the class to write a poll question. They thought he was serious about it so now he is guilt tripped into putting them on his site.
cultural superiority, exotic pets November 09, 2008 11:18 PM
This sounds like an attempt to reinforce cultural superiority. Exotic just divides animals into those we are used to (ie the ones we brought with us from Europe) and those we are not so used to. In terms of suitability as pets, it is a totally meaningless concept.
Should exotic animals such as a monkeys be allowed as domestic pets? Poll Results: 997 votes Yes. No. Depends. Not sure.
Here's a dodgy ad that looks like another poll. It takes you to a dodgy external site, but it is impossible to tell whether it takes you to an external site before clicking on it.
