Bexar County Programs November 27, 2005 5:48 AM

There is a link to Community Action Programs on the resource page. Thought it might be easier to give a brief run-thru of some of the programs here, to keep folks from having to jump around the internet. Please remember, this is a recap, not a cut and paste. If you see a program and need more information, you'll still need to go to the official website or make a phone call.

While SA/Bexar have programs in place, most of them seem to be co-ordinated/administered through Community Non-Profit or Faith Based Organizations. If there is a government office where a person can request assistance, fill out required paperwork (once) and be automatically enrolled in whatever programs they qualify for, I haven't found it yet.

Community Services Program (CSP) November 27, 2005 6:45 AM

Community Services Program (CSP) provides emergency assistance and case management. It is "designed to improve the immediate individual and family needs" of San Antonio and Bexar County residents. There are eight CSP centers in the area, which provide services based on zip code. To find out which one serves your zip code, call the main line at 210-207-7830 or one of the other centers. (I'll list those below.)

I strongly suggest calling ahead not only to determine center to use, but to get a list of required documentation, as well. The last person I spoke to who had tried to apply for assistance had to go back four times. Each time they would stop the process at the point they needed docs she didn't have with her and tell her to come back with them. What they didn't give her was a comprehensive list of everything she needed from that point forward. (Typical Bureaucratic Run-Around.) So be prepared.

Scary Rehab Centers? November 27, 2005 8:59 AM

Hi- First of all, I appreciate the invite. As a teacher I am often paycheck to paycheck myself, I am really excited about doing something in or for SA. I live near Downtown/ close to a shelter and agree that there is a huge homeless population that is going to be in trouble when the temp. goes down.

RE: my subject- I am looking for an in-patient drug rehab facility for a friend of mine. Something very primitive/ basically "scared straight-ish" Last time he went through a "club med" type program and was back on blow within 3 weeks- the thought is maybe there is a County facility that offers more of an aversion type therapy.

Does anyone have any ideas? And yes- funding is an issue: paycheck to paycheck means he's broke because it all went up his nose.

Substance Abuse November 27, 2005 11:49 AM

Well...I found some information on a county substance about program. So far, the articles sound as if it is only available via the act of getting yourself arrested. I'll keep digging into THAT. Meanwhile I was able to pull a list of local treatment centers from the official SAMHSA website. Many of them have have scalable rates, based upon income and payment assistance services. The searches are deleted after you use them, so I can't link to the results from here.

To find a list of facilities in the area that meet specifice needs do a detailed search here:
