San Antonio Food Bank November 29, 2005 8:56 PM

Most people in the area are aware of the San Antonio Food Bankhttp://www.safoodbank.org/) and the work they do. It's hard to find a business in the area that doesn't hold food drives for this organization and most area residents donate food stuffs, especially during the holiday season. But many forget that The Food Bank also needs volunteers to help sort and distribute all of those donations.

They are asking for help this weekend:

24-HOUR SORT-A-THON DEC. 2-3 ... All through the night Dec. 2-3 Looking for a way to get on Santa’s “nice” list before Christmas? How about donating a few hours of your time down at the San Antonio Food Bank’s 24-hour “Sort-A-Thon” beginning at 1 p.m. Dec. 2? It’s a fun way for your group, organization, church, or even your family to get together and do something that will directly benefit hungry people throughout Southwest Texas.

Four-hour shifts are available in the around-the-clock schedule, and food and drinks will be provided by the San Antonio Food Bank, thanks to some local restaurants, like Double Dave’s Pizza Works, Thundercloud Subs and Krispy Kreme.

WHAT: It's a marathon session of sorting food at the San Antonio Food Bank!

WHY: We need volunteers to work four-hour shifts all day and through the night to assist in sorting out the huge amounts of food we receive from the Food 4 SA and various other food drives. Volunteers will also put together holiday food boxes to help feed the hungry this holiday season. Any size group is welcome! We’ll have coffee and water available, as well as Double Dave’s pizza and Thundercloud Subs sandwiches for the munchies!

WHO: We need volunteers (groups or individuals) to works all shifts.
Shifts are as follows:
Dec. 2: 1-5 p.m.; 5-9 p.m.; 9 p.m.-1 a.m.
Dec. 3: 1-5 a.m., 5-9 a.m.
Walk-in volunteers are welcome on any shift. A two-hour minimum stay is required. Please arrive on the hour.

Hi, Richella December 09, 2005 2:59 PM

Generally speaking, links are imbedded in the topic strings. I put a short list of links in the Announcements section on the group homepage. Hopefully, they all work -- I'm not exactly a wiz at HTML programming!

Thanks for the suggestion! ~Deb

Current VOLUNTEER Opportunities December 10, 2005 2:23 AM

Walk-Ins and large volunteer groups are needed to assist in building thousands of holiday food boxes for our local population. Specific walk-in times: 9 a.m.-9 p.m., Mondays through Fridays, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturdays, and 12 noon -7 p.m. Sundays.

The location of the volunteer experience is at 5909 Business Park (located off of I-35 Northbound and Rittiman/Business Park.

If heading North on I-35, exit right in Rittiman and go to the 2nd light, turn right and the warehouse is on your immediate right hand side ... the door we use is the EXTREME far left side and it is unmarked. The task is sorting food and building food boxes for those in need.
