21st July Challenge!

I am a member of the Born Free Activate Team and every two-months I recieve details on a new challenge and send letters by e-mail or sometimes by post to relevant decision-makers such as Prime Ministers ect. It is very rewarding and we have had lots of sucesses include stopping the export of wild-caught elephants from Borneo to Japan; stopping the use of live lion cubs in Disneyland Paris parades and stopping the use of lion and tiger cubs for tourist photos in a Spanish theme park.

They are looking for new people to join all the time. It is FREE and simply involves e-mailing the person in charge who will send you a starter pack over the internet or through the post with everything you need for your first letter-writing tasks. Go here for more details and I want to hear that as many of you as possible have joined: http://www.bornfree.org.uk/get-involved/activate/

When you join you will recieve a Green Star from myself and if you do write any letters please post them here as well so I can read them too.

Here is an example of one of my letters:

Dear Professor Geoffrey Wahungu,
I am writing to you today to express my concerns about the proposed Whale Shark Conservation Project at Waa. It will involve Whale Sharks being captured from the wild, so tourists can swim with them in a shallow sea pen off the coast of Kenya. This is the plan of a company called Seaquarium Ltd and I believe that this plan should not be approved.
Whale Sharks are magnificent creatures and can dive down almost 1000 metres-the average depth of the enclosure will only be 10m. And although the sharks pose no threat to humans in the wild, if they are in close proximity to tourists they may well behave violently. Whale sharks can live to 100 years old. The planned swim-with programme might result in their illness or early death, threatening this vulnerable species.
The methods for transporting wild sharks have not been outlined in detail to date, but will likely involve attaching floatation devices to the sharks to tire them out, then the captured sharks being towed to the enclosure, where tourists will be able to swim with them. It is easy to imagine what a stressful experience this will be for the whale sharks.
As well as the frightening capture process, these animals will be kept captive for up to six months, with ‘fresh’ sharks being caught and transported as others are released. This is supposed to avoid stressing the animals! It will not.
It is unclear how Seaquarium intends to source correct quantities of the right food to fed them and this may dramatically impact the health of the captive whale sharks. It may also be very expensive to look after them properly and I am inclined to believe the aquarium does not have the financial ability to care for the sharks for a long period of time. This one factor could be fatal.
Volker Bassen, the director of this plan, has justified the project on the basis that the whale sharks will remain within their ‘natural habitat’. There is nothing natural about confining a highly migratory, deep-diving species to a shallow sea pen where it will be subjected to the stresses of heat and tourist interactions.
Considering that whale sharks are assessed as globally Vulnerable on the IUCN1 Red List of Threatened Species, I cannot see how you would approve of such cruelty to an animal already struggling to survive in the wild. There are no apparent conservation gains to this project; in fact it is more likely that it will have a negative impact on East Africa’s whale shark populations. Please consider these points I have made and put a stop to this terrible plan before it goes any further.
Kind Regards,
Bethany Dale

Beth, I gave to Best friends. I don't have extra money that's why I sign petitions like Ruth. Sorry Beth, I would if I could.

Sorry if I did not make it clear but Activate is completely and utterly free of charge which is why I suggested it as a challenge. I would not have suggested it if you had to pay of it as I understand people have struggles with money.
