Kate, I just can't imagine what it must be like for you living through all of the turmoil that Greece is experiencing now. I really feel for the peoples of Greece and fear the same things that are happening there, spreading under these austerity measures that the very wealthy continue to push.

Two more Greek far-right party MPs jailed before trial

ATHENS (Reuters) - Two lawmakers from Greece's far-right Golden Dawn party were remanded to custody on Saturday pending trial on charges of belonging to a criminal group, on what prosecutors say is evidence linking the party to a series of attacks, including the killing of an anti-racism rapper in 2013.

Lawmakers Yorgos Germenis and Panagiotis Iliopoulos are the latest senior party officials to be jailed pending trial as part of a government crackdown on the party, which it has branded a "neo-Nazi criminal gang."

Both men denied charges against them in a marathon plea session before investigating magistrates that ended late on Saturday after more than 12 hours. A trial date has not been set. All Golden Dawn lawmakers deny involvement in the killing.

"Golden Dawn is a legitimate political party taking on a sincere political struggle," Iliopoulos told reporters earlier on Saturday, flanked by dozens of flag-waving supporters, some chanting the party's "Blood! Honour! Golden Dawn! slogan.

"We will not buckle. Golden Dawn will be victorious - Greece will be victorious," he said.

Party leader Nikos Mihaloliakos and dozens more senior party officials were arrested last September following the stabbing of rapper Pavlos Fissas and were charged on what prosecutors say is evidence linking the party to a series of attacks.

Another MP, Stathis Boukouras, was due to respond to the charges on Sunday. "All these lies will be forfeited - the truth will shine," Boukouras said outside the court

The public arrests of the party's top brass riveted the country, which has not witnessed a mass round-up of elected politicians since a military coup nearly five decades ago.

Golden Dawn rose from being a fringe party to win 18 seats in parliament in elections in 2012.

It has drawn on anger over the debt crisis, budget cuts, high unemployment and corruption to become the Greece's third most popular party in surveys, but it lost about a third of its support after the killing.

As part of government efforts to clamp down on the party, parliament last year voted to cut off state funding for the group.

Golden Dawn, whose emblem resembles a swastika and whose members have been seen giving Nazi-style salutes, rejects the neo-Nazi label.

.
A hard hitting documentary which shows the plight of refugees and migrants in recession hit Athens, Into The Fire is a film with a difference.
.
Shot and edited with sensitivity and compassion, it doesn't pull its punches and makes for harrowing viewing in parts. It is the product of crowd funding, dedication, self-sacrifice and a burning sense of justice.
.
On 21 April, Into the Fire is simultaneously released on websites, blogs and other platforms around the internet. The film will be available in various languages, including Albanian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Italian and Spanish. There are a number of public screenings planned in several countries in Europe and Northern America. To participate in the release or organise a screening see http://intothefire.org/publish
.
This strategy is being used to maximise the audience, in the hope that the audience will become active participants, commentators and amplifiers when it comes to opposing the conditions visited on the victims in the story.
.
The premiere of Into the Fire on 29th April, 6:30pm will be hosted by the School of Oriental and African Studies. The filmmakers will be joined for discussion by Habib Rahman of the Join Council for the Welfare of Immigrants.
.
In times of severe austerity things look bleak for Greek people, but they're far worse for those who have recently arrived. Without housing, legal papers or support, migrants in Greece are faced with increasing and often violent racism at the hands of the growing Nazi party Golden Dawn and the police in Athens. Many are trapped by EU laws and legislation of other EU countries meaning they'd be returned to Greece if they managed to get to another member state, they are desperate to leave the country.
.
This film gives incredible insights to the reality faced by people who simply want to lead peaceful, normal lives.
Having been to Athens to shoot footage about austerity in April last year, Reel News video activists started talking and working with a young Somalian refugee, they made many contacts in the migrant world and those contacts gave them access to a huge number of untold and shocking stories.
.
Funded by small donations from friends and organisations, the film makers are once more turning to their supporters and allies in the UK to distribute the film online and through screenings to grassroots groups across the country. No one has been paid to work on this film.

A strategy meeting in Amsterdam became a critical milestone for the convergence of different European social movements on the frontlines of resistance against the neoliberal EU austerity regime.

How Europe's Social Movements Converged in Amsterdam to Plan 2014 #EUInCrisis

.

http://www.occupy.com/article/how-europes-social-movements-converged-amsterdam-plan-2014-euincrisis

.

The Transnational Institute hosted in Amsterdam a European strategy meeting in October which brought together different European social movements on the front lines of resistance against the neoliberal E.U. austerity regime.

.

Austerity, privatization and attacks on social rights, imposed by the European Commission, have become a reality for people across Europe. While there have been many impressive struggles at the national level - especially in Southern Europe - European coordination is still weak apart from sporadic days of joint action.

.

In recent years European social movements have organized numerous meetings to analyze the situation. However, it also became clear that European social movements required a common strategy. Following the results of the E.U. economic governance assembly organized in the Alter Summit in Greece in June, the Amsterdam strategy meeting was called to coordinate European struggles against the Troika's imposition of neoliberal policies under the new E.U. economic governance regime.

.

A European Square

Coming from all over Europe, 60 organizations and networks from well-established groups with a long history to the most recent social movements, gathered over three days in Amsterdam to share stories of successful resistance and to shape common campaigns and strategies.

.

There was a strong commitment to apply the lessons learned during the recent camps and occupations. The proposed agenda was modified along the lines of a general assembly, where all the participants had their say through an open and horizontal process. Different working groups were created to further develop the topics that were considered most important for the months to come: Democracy and the commons, Troika and Debt, the Competitiveness Pact, and the European elections.

.

As a result, four different initiatives were jointly developed at the end of the strategy meeting:

.

  • Troika Party: Under the slogan of "Democracy is not competitive", this communication campaign organized around a fake political party will expose the role of the Troika in European decision making, and the real discourse behind the Troika policies.

.

  • Competitiveness Pact: This new piece of E.U. legislation under discussion is the new framework to push further austerity measures and weakening of labor laws. This campaign will not only oppose this pact but also will say "Basta!" to the principle of competing in a race to the bottom.

  • Mapping the alternatives: A newly created online directory will map all the European initiatives that are protecting the commons and developing solidarity economies. It will make them visible and demonstrate that there are real alternatives to neoliberal policies.

  • Week of action during the European elections: The European elections were identified as a key moment to mobilize European social movements against the neoliberal E.U. crisis regime. De-centralized but coordinated actions will be promoted all over Europe.

To @VivianeRedingEU: Save @Presseurop!

.

Update: As of 22 December 2013 Presseurop.eu is in hibernation. If you believe in a future for the Presseurop project, your support for this petition is still valuable!

This Friday, Presseurop is scheduled to close down. Our contract with the European Commission, which finances the website, ends on 22 December and the Commission has informed us that it does not intend to continue the project, citing budgetary reasons.

.

This is despite the European Parliament voting for an increase in the EU's 2014 budget so that the Commission would have additional resources to finance media projects, including Presseurop. The Commission apparently prefers to use the funds for other initiatives. Deprived of this funding, we will be forced to close.

.

Since it was launched, at the Commission's initiative in 2009, Presseurop has earned itself a reputation as a leading independent European Union news website. Each day, our readers can find the best of the European and international press translated into 10 languages. They can also share and comment on the articles posted. A community was thus created – a true embryo of European citizenship – allowing debate about Europe on our unique multilingual discussion platform. For the newspapers and for the journalists, intellectuals and experts – more than 1,700 to date – whose articles we have published, Presseurop is a way to reach audiences beyond their linguistic borders.

.

We deeply regret that just a few months ahead of European elections that will be crucial for the future of the EU and despite being greatly valued by readers and journalists, the European Commission wants to halt this experiment. An independent review ordered by the Commission gave a glowing assessment of Presseurop and encouraged the continuation of the project. But the Commission has chosen to follow a different path – one that deprives European citizens of a precious tool enabling them to participate in the EU's democratic life.

This shared space must not disappear
