Black rhino hunt permit auctioned in US

Protest outside the Dallas Convention Center where the Dallas Safari Club held its weekend show and auction

There were protests in Dallas as the auction took place

A permit to hunt and kill an endangered Black Rhino in Namibia has been sold at a US auction for $350,000 (£212,000).

-

The Dallas Safari Club in Texas says the hunt will help protect the species by removing an old aggressive rhino, and funding future conservation.

-

However, the auction has been fiercely criticised by conservationists, and has even drawn death threats.

-

Namibia is home to about a third of the world's 5,000 black rhinos, and issues just three hunting permits a year.

-

It is the first time a permit has been auctioned outside the southern African nation.

-

'A sad joke'

The auction was held amid tight security at a Dallas convention centre, where dozens of protesters had gathered.

-

The winning bidder - who has not been named - will hunt an old, non-breeding male rhino.

-

The organisers say such animals actually pose a threat to younger rhinos, which they sometimes charge and kill.

-

All proceeds will be donated to the Namibian government and will be earmarked for conservation efforts, safari club officials said.

-

Animal rights groups described the hunt's conservation claim as "perverse" and "a sad joke".

-

"This auction is telling the world that an American will pay anything to kill their species," Jeffrey Flocken of the International Fund for Animal Welfare (Ifaw) told the Associated Press.

-

"This is, in fact, making a spectacle of killing an endangered species."

-

More than 80,000 people signed online petitions against the auction.

-

The FBI says it is investigating a string of death threats over the auction.

At present it is estimated that there are around 20,000 white rhinos left.

-

Experts say that growing demand for rhino horn in Asia is driving up instances of poaching.

-

It is being fuelled by the belief in countries like China and Vietnam that powdered rhino horn has medicinal powers and can impact diseases like cancer. Horns can sell for around $65,000 a kg.

I read an article posted by the Africa Geographic Editorial on October 31st 2013 saying that a Dallas Based Safari Company will in January 2014 auction off one Black Rhino for Trophy Hunters. Rhinos' are an endangered Species, why oh why are you allowing one clueless hunter the chance to shoot one of these magnificent creatures, there are so few left in the World. Our Game Rangers are fighting a "War" against poachers to protect them honour them and help stop the slaughter.

Don't Allow the Sponsored Sport Killing of a Rare Black Rhino!

.

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/721/035/486/dont-all-the-dallas-safari-club-to-sponsor-the-killing-of-a-rare-black-rhino/

.

I fell upon an online article from the Dallas Observer by Eric Nicholson which unbelievably report that the Dallas Safari Club intend to sponsor the hunt and kill of a rare Namibian Black Rhino...one of only 1800 left in Namibia and whose government has approved as well as our own U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.

.

The event takes place in January and has the possibility of bringing in $750,000. Ben Carter, the director of the Dallas Safari Club, claims to be committed to saving the black rhino and insisted the money will be donated back to the Conservation Trust Fund for Namibia's Black Rhino. The article stated, even more disturbing to learn is this kind of event is an annual one. Given their are less than 2000 of the rare animal in that country, this seems very contradictory, senseless and obviously cruel.

.

It is bad enough that paid poachers kill for the horn's imaginary medicinal properties, but what is far worse is that the thoughtless pay for sport hunting resulting in yet one more dead endangered animal just so they can hang the decapitated head on their wall only to puff about it over cocktails. Deplorable and shameful. I urge you to sign this petition and pass it on imploring President Pohamba to rethink and change what Namibia's government has set in motion and put a halt to this action.

Thank you.

Conversation efforts have seen gradual population increases after a long and devastating period of  hunting and poaching. Even so, black rhinos are still critically endangered, with a popular demand for their horns.

Stop Importing Endangered Rhino Trophies to the U.S.

.

A hunter from Wisconson killed and endangered black rhino while on safari in Namibia, Africa. The United States granted permission for the American hunter, (David K. Reinke, CEO of Liberty Parts Team), to import his trophy back into the U.S. There are only 5,000 black rhinos left in the wild.

.

Setting a new precedent, it is first time any endangered species taken from the wild has ever been allowed to be imported into the United States.

.

The hunter claims that the $175,000 he paid to kill the rhino will go towards conserving them. But killing endangered species doesn't conserve them, it encouages safari hunters to kill even more of them.

.

The hunter claims that the $175,000 he paid to kill the rhino will go towards conserving them. But killing endangered species doesn't conserve them, it encouages safari hunters to kill even more of them.

.

Teresa Telecky, Director of the Wildlife Department at Humane Society International says,"I hear this argument all the time, The money trophy hunters leave in the country will improve the conservation of the species.

.

But whenever we actually investigate how much money and where it's going, we just can't find evidence to verify this. " She continues, "In fact, in this particular case, the $175,000 that this fellow left in Namibia in return for his rhino, is going into a general fund which is tapped for all sorts of things, including rural development, which might not be good for the species at all."

.

Tell the United States to uphold ban the trade in endangered species and stop granting permits to import safari hunt trophies.

The Dallas Safari Club has auctioned off a hunting permit for a Namibian black rhino. The winner of that auction needs to obtain an import permit from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to bring the rhino they kill back to the U.S.
.
Urge the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to deny the application for the import permit. With fewer than 5,000 left in the wild, black rhinos need your help.

Once they waive the regulation for this, they will be asked to do it again and again and again. Doing it this time will set a precedence that will make it harder for them to deny another request. I said as much in my comment.

This is for my island Crete thank you all again for your support .

"The Greek government has made an agreement with the Americans to unload Syria's chemical weapons, through the method of hydrolysis into the Cretan sea. This will lead to the destruction of aquatic ecosystems in the Eastern Mediterranean. Pollution will transform the water around western Crete, Malta and Libya into a graveyard where there will be no aquatic life. People will not be able to swim due to high levels of toxic pollution, consumption of fish will be highly dangerous and the economy will suffer immensely due to a sudden decrease in tourism. Don't let them turn paradise into a toxic wasteland."

Rhino Poachers In South Africa Set Terrible New Record

Rhino Poachers In South Africa Set Terrible New Record

.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/01/17/1000-rhino-poaching-south-africa_n_4618752.html?ref=topbar

.

.

Poachers in South Africa reached a milestone in 2013 when they killed more than 1,000 rhinos for their horns.

.

The harrowing benchmark is a new record for poaching in the African nation. It represents more than a 50 percent increase from the year before, Reuters reports.

.

South Africa is home to the majority of the world's rhino population, so mass killings of this volume is a dire warning for conservationists, the outlet notes. The black rhino is considered "critically endangered" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), while the white rhino is classified as "near threatened." Both subspecies live in South Africa.

.

The drastic rise in rhino deaths has been tied to skyrocketing demand in Asia for the creatures' horns. Prized for its status as well as its alleged medicinal value, ground up rhino horn is sold as a cure for everything from cancer to diabetes at prices up to $100,000 per kilogram.

.

Vietnam has proved to have a particularly insatiable demand for the powder, which was reportedly linked to the recovery of a cancer-stricken official, Smithsonian magazine notes.

.

In an effort to stop poachers, South Africa has turned its park service rangers into soldiers and has even deployed members of the armed forces to the hard-hit rhino habitat of Kruger National Park, the Telegraph reports. Although more than 300 suspected poachers were arrested last year, the criminal operations use sophisticated tactics and resources to elude law enforcement.
