People of Earth ratifying the Kyoto Protocol January 03, 2006 5:20 PM
Dear friends,
After two weeks of research of the Kyoto Protocol (due to University chore), I have come to learn the importance of this Protocol in further international negotiations about dealing with Global Warming.
Therefor I've found it incredibly important that the citizens of the world will also give their support to the protocol and its implementation.
I've picked up a high bar - attempting to get 50 milion people to sign in 2 years time (by 2008 countries taking part in Kyoto should already make a long way to mitigate Greenhouse Gasses)
I really need your help in promoting the petition - reaching this goal will make an enormous change in International Politics by proving enviromental issues to be key issues in today's politics.
The petition's URL is http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/179477556
Should you be ready to help me promote the petition beyond signing it and sending it to your friends, please contact me so we can work together to make the world a better place.
Truely yours,
Erez Luke Cohen

HAS EVERY MEMBER SIGNED THIS ?
As of yesterday morning (and after 11 days on Care2) the total signatories stood at only 269.
I then blogged it: http://www.care2.com/c2c/share/sharebook/ and we now have 281..... NOT GOOD ENOUGH BY ANY MEANS..... We are looking for THOUSANDS..... We know there are thousands of people on Care2... and if every member sends it out to ALL their groups we may just reach those thousands of members.
Please spare 5 minutes to try and achieve this aim.
Thank you - May your day be blessed.

If something doesn't work, try AGAIN.
And if it doesn't work then, try something NEW.
I posted the link on the announcements link on my group but I don't know how effective it has been. But I think this is a better way of spreading the word than Red and Blue pins.
If the hosts of some of the popular (and other) groups (environmental or otherwise) are your friends, you can request them to try this. Even if the post archieved, anyone visiting the group wil have easy access to the link.

New ways to spread the word January 15, 2006 3:42 PM
We're now standing at 297 (just 3 more to 300).
I think it could be a good idea to cite the number of signatures every time we post something on this thread (unless no signatures were added since the last post on the thread). It will give us motivation to work harder.
I've created two new banners for the project. you can find them in my photo album and at:
http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/1840/ratify24tc.jpghttp://img299.imageshack.us/img299/5757/raitfy6xk.jpg
I've added one of them with a link to the petition in the anouncements thread.
The other was added just the same to my BillBoard.
please join me with these actions. Put the banners in your Billboards and hosted groups and set an example to other Care2 members

Thank you for adding it in the announcements in our other group. I have also added one to my profile.
I wish you would turn those thingy things on in here - so I can alter size of text and colour etc.

Anyway must go... its bedy-bye time... its past midnight here in U.K.

I was happy to become signature 290 on the "People of the World
Ratifying Kyoto" petition. I feel it crucially deserves passing on and I'm doing
so.
I am currently sponsoring a petition against VP Cheney, who I believe is
one of the top foes, not only of Kyoto but of all environmental issues
-- as well as human and animal beings throughout the world. I hope you
will read my brief petition and consider signing it and passing it on.

Peace and love,

I was hoping we could get to 500 by the end of the weekend, I guess that won't happen but we have to push it beyond the 400.
I've posted the link of the petition in some of the envirolink pages, some should already host the link, others will take about a week to add the link to their sites.
Does anyone of you have a homepage?
We should get more people who has websites to add the petition link to their sites.
This is after I've posted another alert today calling people to urgently sign the petition and this is not enough of course.
I'd like the petition to push through the 500 signature line before it is one month old - meaning - By Febuary 3rd 4:36 p.m. PST.
Please pass it on to all your friends if you haven't done so yet and publish alerts with the petition link to your network in the next few days. It shuoldn't be that hard to get another 24 people to sign the petition in 48 hours.
One more thing you can do is bump posts regarding the petition in other groups by calling people to sign it. I've done so in several groups and don't want to over do it myself as for not to be regarded a spammer.
We have reached the 500 sigs before the end of the first month but we must push onwards. The only way we can prove a ripple effect is by reach more than 1000 signatures by the end of the second month.
The project's website will be up and running this weekend.
If anyone surfs websites and forums outside care2 - it's time to spread the word outside the network, as care2 signatures are becoming harder and harder to harvest.
Studies back fears sea levels are rising rapidly February 12, 2006 4:19 PM
Studies back fears sea levels are rising rapidly Matthew Denholm February 01, 2006
THE world's worst fears about global warming and rapid sea-level rise will be realised or exceeded, according to two new reports.
Australian climate change research published yesterday found the average level of the oceans had risen 19.5cm since 1870 and the rate was increasing.
The study provides the first evidence of a 20th-century acceleration in sea-level rise and supports predictions the world's oceans will rise 31cm above 1990 levels by 2100.
A separate report released in Britain paints an ever more alarming picture, suggesting ice sheets may be melting, raising the prospect of sea levels rising by 5m over several centuries.
British Prime Minister Tony Blair said the research clearly showed that "the risks of climate change may well be greater than we thought".
"It is now plain that the emission of greenhouse gases, associated with industrialisation and economic growth from a world population that has increased six-fold in 200 years, is causing global warming at a rate that is unsustainable," Mr Blair writes in a foreword to the research.
Published in the report Avoiding Dangerous Climate Change, it warns of large-scale disruption if temperatures rise above 3C - within the range of climate change models for this century.
The author of the Australian research, internationally renowned CSIRO chief research scientist John Church, said it was now clear there would be significant sea-level rise without major changes to human behaviour. "Clearly, sea-level rise will be reported in metres unless we have a substantial decrease in greenhouse gas emissions," Dr Church told The Australian.
He said his study, conducted with CSIRO scientist Neil White using data from tide gauges and satellite measurements, vindicated sea-level rise projections by the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
"Although predicted by models, this is the first time a 20th-century acceleration has actually been detected."
The study concludes that sea levels rose an average 16cm during the 20th century, with a rough year-on-year increase of 1.7cm.
It finds that sea level rise began during the first half of the 19th century, when global sea level was about 20cm below current levels. A comparison of sea-level benchmarks carved in rock on the Isle of the Dead, near Port Arthur in Tasmania in 1840, and the height of ancient Roman fish tanks, indicated little sea level increase until 1800.
The study, part of Australia's Climate Change Science Program, is likely to be considered at the IPCC's global climate change assessment next year.
The British research, based on a forum of scientists at Exeter last February, includes a warning from British Antarctic Survey head Chris Rapley that the West Antarctic Ice Sheet may be starting to melt.
Scientists believe the melting of the ice sheet would eventually raise sea levels around the world by 5m.
"The last IPCC report characterised Antarctica as a slumbering giant in terms of climate change. I would say it is now an awakened giant," Professor Rapley writes. "There is real concern."
The report warns a delay of even five years in reducing greenhouse gas emissions "could be significant".
The federal Opposition said the findings highlighted the need for Australia to sign the Kyoto Protocol.
I will send an e-mail to all my contacts asking them to sign the petition and forward. But I dont really understand this myself... can someone give me a easy-digest explination that I can use? Thank you!

The past three days have brought our petition 122 signatures.
Our dear Agnes C. have sent messages and e-mails to all her friends and called them to sign the petition.
A reminder was posted on all big groups on Care2 and I posted a call for signatures on Israeli Environmental Forums.
Agnes has proved the importance of sending the petition to friends via messages and e-mails. If you hadn't done so, please send the petition so we can get more leverage from this wave of signatures.
