Deaths due to AIDS

Every minute of every day, a child under the age of 15 dies of AIDS-related illness.

AIDS claimed three million lives in 2004. One of every six of them was a child under the age of 15.

In 2004, 510,000 children under 15 years old died because of AIDS.

HIV infection among children and young people

Each year, 640,000 children under 15 are infected with HIV. Without treatment, half of them will die before their second birthday.

Nearly 90 percent of new child HIV infections occur in sub-Saharan Africa, but the number of such infections is increasing in other areas, particularly Asia.

Every 15 seconds, a young person between the ages of 15 and 24 is infected with HIV.

In 2004, more than 2 million young people aged 15 to 24 were newly infected with HIV.

Pediatric Treatment:

One widely available drug, cotrimoxazole, can nearly halve child deaths from HIV/AIDS. The drug costs as little as three U.S. cents a day. But only 1 percent of children who need it have access to it.

An estimated 4 million children, some already diagnosed with HIV and others born to HIV-positive mothers but not yet diagnosed, need access to cotrimoxazole, which is proven to fight off deadly infections.

There are roughly 660,000 children under the age of 15 who need access to antiretroviral treatment.Less than 5 percent of HIV-positive children in need of anti-retroviral medicine receive it.

Until there's a real AIDS vaccine - our best vaccine is education January 11, 2006 2:27 AM

Despite clear evidence that education can drastically reduce the rate of new HIV infections, President Bush's AIDS policy is almost entirely focused on abstinence education rather than a comprehensive approach -- teaching abstinence, monogamy and condom use -- a formula that has succeeded in Africa and elsewhere.

Empowering women and girls through education truly works; but conservative ideology is blocking access to information that would help those who are most vulnerable.

Tell the Administration that to fight AIDS we must prioritize comprehensive education over ideologically-driven abstinence programs!

Help The ONE Campaign in the Fight Against Poverty and AIDS January 11, 2006 2:27 AM

Africa has been hit harder by the HIV/AIDS virus than any other region of the world

At the G8 meeting on July 8, President Bush and leaders from the world's richest nations pledged to increase development aid to Africa by $25 billion.

But this is only the beginning - and serious work remains to be done.

We must recognize that if new aid is to translate into genuine improvements in the everyday lives of Africans, we must insist that aid promises are kept and resources allocated.

Please join us as we urge our leaders to turn this historic pledge into meaningful, lifesaving programs. Let's keep up the positive pressure and make 2006 the year we joined together to make history.  [ send green star]
$1.00 for EACH candle January 11, 2006 2:30 AM

Credit goes to Elsie for pointing this one out and to Michael B. for posting it....

I would like to ask for you help and it will only take you just a few moments to do this for me as well as others who are living with HIV and or AIDS.

This site will donate $1.00 for ever candle lite, so I ask that you go to this site and lite a candle, and then forward it on to your family and friends so that as many people as possible will lite a candle to help researchers to help find ways of maybe coming up with a cure, if not better medicines to help control it.

...A truly great cause thank you guys!
