You know the kind that I'm talking about! The kind of remedies that EVERYONE'S grandma...or great-grandma, depending on how old you are....used to use! That's a lot of what natural healing's about!
My Mom used to have a book called, Vermont Folk Medicine, and she used to use a lot of things on us out of that. The one everyone in my family knows and loves...including my kids, believe it or not...is SWITCHEL! It's something most folks would sure hate to drink! Hahaha! Our family actually developed a craving for it!
Switchel is an excellent drink used for many purposes, such as balancing the pH of the stomach and working to reduce mucus and inflammation throughout the body. It's especially well known for how well it helps the joints move!
Here's how you make it the best!
3/4 C Pure Organic Apple Cider
3/4 C Raw Local Honey
Enough purified water to fill a 2 Qt. pitcher
Shake it up...stirring is not enough...and you have to turn it upside down and shake it every time you drink it, or the honey will all sink and you'll just get a vinegar drink.
Try it! My family has always loved it...and how it makes us feel!

When I was a child my mom would treat my earaches with (don't laugh) salt she had heated in the skillet and put in a sock.
She would then put the sock on the outside of whichever ear was hurting. It worked!! The heat dulled the pain.
Also, my Mamaw, would put Sweet Oil drops in my ears and then put in cotton. This also helped. ![]()
A remedy I found for ear aches is ear candles. I have always been prone to ear aches, usually having about 3 a year. I started using the ear candles in 1998 and have NOT had an ear ache since. I LOVE THEM!!!!!!
It is often thought that ear candling originated in the East but I found out that is NOT the case.
The Native Americans, specifically, the Hopi tribes used ear candling as a cleansing and spiritual practice. ![]()

You don't really hear much about poultices anymore except in hard core herbalist and naturopath circles...it seems to be an art that got lost.
But poultices have been used throughout time, with extremely good results in helping to alleviate pain and in drawing out inflammations and infections.
What is a poultice? It is soft, moist plant tissue applied warm or hot to the body exernally. The best ones are made from ground or granulated herbs.
First, wash the area to be covered with hydrogen peroxide, if possible. If not, water will do just fine.
Mix just enough water with powdered herbs to make a thick paste. It should be about one inch thick when applied. If using granulated herbs, make a thick paste by mixing with cormeal or some othre meal, along with hot water.
Green leaves can also be used. Mash them up and then steep them in warm water for a few minutes before applying.
Poultices should be applied hot, but take care not to burn the skin. The object is to retain the warmth and moisture as long as you can.
The hot paste that is made from combining the plant material with water and any other poultice making materials used, can be spread onto a flannel cloth and applied, so as to reduce the mess. In some cases it's best to cover the whole thing with a piece of plastic. Some plant juices stain, so be sure to cover your clothes.
A hot water bottle may be used to keep it hot for as long as possible. Prepare an extra batch to have ready to use as soon as the first one grows cold. Do not rewarm and reuse...throw it away and make fresh! Remember, poultices draw poisons out...you don't want to put them back in.)
Here's a real easy one to make out of ingredients you probably already have! This is for inflammation and supperations. ("Supperations" means forming pus.)
CARROT POULTICE
(Mmm...sounds good!)
- 4 oz. carrots (use onion instead if the rabbits ate all the carrots!)
- 1 oz. cornmeal
- Boiling water (enough to blend)
Just shred the carrots and use according to the instructions above...
I've used carrot poultices for years! We're talking 40 or 50 years here. I never knew they were supposed to be warm. I just shread a carrot or two, and put it on the wound, wrap it up and let it stay a while. Maybe a repeat in a couple hours.
Another item I've used is seaweed. Very healing. Since I live in the mountains now, I buy a package of dry, tear a few pieces, wet them and put it on for a few days time. It's what finally healed my 3 1/2 year old leg ulcer. 4 doctors and a would clinic couldn't do it. So I took matters into my own hands.
Maybe it was 5 doctors...
Took about 3 - 4 weeks to heal over. I mean heal, not scab. I still have a dent in my leg, thanks to the (*not*) miracles of modern medicine.
Red Wine, Garlic (swallow cloves, but smelly), Olive Oil, Vinegar, and Fresh Lemon Juice. However, genetic science might one day show these things to only be beneficial according to ones DNA.
My Nanny (Grandmother) swears by anything sweet for children, literally or figuratively (just don't tell Mom & Dad). LoL!
Honeycomb is a wonderful treatment for disturbances of the breathing tract. Chewing the comb and eating a few spoonfuls of honey each day, has been known to help with hay fevers, allergies, stuffy noses, colds and sinus problems. What a delicious way to feel good!

Here's a great linament that's easy to make and practically free, plus it's REAL GOOD for the BONES!
Take a couple of egg shells...empty ones...and put them in a jar and cover with apple cider vinegar and let it sit for a couple of days.
Bubbles will soon begin to rise to the top from the shells, and the outside of the shell will become covered with many blisters. Within a couple of days the whole shell will dissolve, leaving behind just a thin membrane. At this point, the calcium has entered into solution and you've got something very potent to use as a linament, on say, perhaps, broken bones, like the one I have in my foot! I'm using this stuff right now, and it seems to be helping a lot.
I am sure it is not only the calcium which is helping, but the apple cider vinegar, too. The apple cider vinegar serves to associate the calcium with potassium. Potassium regulates the use of calcium within the body, so this combination delivers extremely good results, and it's very cheap and easy to make!

I found a great way to treat planter warts. My daughter had one when she was about 9 years old and we took her to a foot doctor. He treated it "humanely" he said by putting acid on it once a week for 10 weeks. The poor kid could hardly walk for three days after each treatment and would just be healed up and start all over again.
So, I saw her limping about a year later... and she started screaming that she would rather have the pain than go through that again. So, I looked and this time she had three of them almost in the same spot on the ball of her foot.
I asked her if she would like me to look and see if there was anything natural we could use and she said she would. So, I searched for a couple of days and finally found something in one of my natural medicine books... wish I could remember which one, so I could post a reference, but I can't.
It said to break open one capsule of Vit E and rub it directly on the planter wart. Then it said to take 1 capsule daily, at least 500 IU. By 24 hours the pain was gone and she was able to walk normally. We did this each day for 3 weeks and then they just formed little black balls and fell off. She has never had another one since.

“My grandfather would cut branches with the leaves still on them and crush the leaves, then he and his brothers would stick the branches between the harness and the horse to keep deerflies, horseflies and mosquitoes away,” said Charles T. Bryson, an ARS botanist in Stoneville, Miss. “I was a small child, maybe 7 or 8 years old, when he told me about the plant the first time. For almost 40 years, I’ve grabbed a handful of leaves, crushed them and rubbed them on my skin with the same results.”
An old Amish folk medicine remedy for cataracts is to scrape a raw pototo and put it onto a cloth to be applied to closed eyes and left on overnight.
Another one is to press the juice from an old raw potation and put two drops of fresh juice into each eye with an eye dropper every night before bed.

When I went to Vietnam. I tried something that was told to me by many chinese/vietnamese patients. So I tried it and it works!!
YOu get chrysanthemum petals(sold in chinese market) and you boil this for about 7 min. then you take the tea and drink it.(could add sweetener of your choice) Then you put the wet petals in a compress and leave it over your closed eyes for about 20 min. you should do this every day for one month then every other day until your vision clears(mucous, blurry vision, warts, ect.) also good for cleansing eyelids.
Just wanted to contribute.
Blessings
Robert

In India, Ayurvedic physicians prescribe apple cider vinegar in combination with the herb Gotu Kola to help in the revitalizing of the skin. Indians have been known to consume apple cider vinegar in combination with honey to improve digestion.
It contributes greatly to the breaking down of food in the body and also prevents harmful bacteria from multiplying. Even respiratory infections can be kept at bay, sore throats improve, and nasal discharges decrease. The benefits of apple cider vinegar have been proclaimed by the ancient Egyptians and have been traditionally used by them to treat ailments of all kinds. In fact they believed apple cider acted as a tonic improving the circulation and flow of blood. Apples are allowed to ferment and this fermented fruit acid, which is loaded with pectin and minerals like potassium, chlorine, magnesium, sodium and calcium, seems to be a panacea. In addition it contains vitamins and beta-carotene. In fact experiments have proved that it contains carbolic acids, aldehydes, ketones, alcohols and acetates also. It is no wonder than that the health benefits of apple cider vinegar are infinite. Pectin in the apples is a fiber, which attaches itself to cholesterol globules, and when combined with the herb centella aids in getting rid of bad cholesterol and helps in regulating blood pressure. This fruit acid is often used by some as a final hair-rinse.

The next time vinegar came to my rescue was for an ongoing problem I was having with plantar warts on the bottom of my foot. I contracted the pesky virus from the local Y's locker room floor. It was spreading and I was dreading going to the podiatrist because I knew it would involve pain and money. Instead, I luckily thought of vinegar....it saved me before....could it get rid of plantar warts? I decided it was worth a try. I soaked my foot about three times a week. I should have done it every night but I just couldn't remember to do it every night. Nothing happened for about 2-3 weeks but I was determined to make life on my foot very uncomfortable for these warts. So after every soak I would rub my foot vigorously with a clean towel. Finally after about 2-3 weeks I noticed the nasty little black warts were loosening their grip on my foot and some were being toweled away!
I just found a "FEW" interesting sites about Vinegar
My episitomy stitches tore open and the doctor suggested putting coffee (finely ground) on the open wound. I lived in Colombia, S.A. at the time. It healed in a couple of days. I could feel it drawing the skin together.
Also healed rough skin from frostbite on a knuckle of my hand. I put very strong brewed coffee on it for several days. A scab formed and then the skin was like new.
I will be keeping it in my favs! Only problem, I am vegan, so no honey for me! I already have alot of organic spices and vinegars, along with my vegies, and most of my fruits. Organic nuts when I cook. Even my coffee and chocolates (vegan, dark) are all organic when my budget allows. Vibe helped get me started on herbal remedies for my cats. I knew some, but not as much. We are all on herbs, except my hubby who is stubborn as a ****!!!!
Olive Oil and lavender essential oils just got me over an ear infection, I also use lavender in the cats bath, yes they bathe, to repel mosquitos. An onion cut in half and rubbed on a wart is helpful, I didnt know about the other. When my son was little, he got a really bad sore throat, slippery elm bark in a tea solved that, He had his voice back, loud and strong, in three days. I tried it when I got a sore throat, worked great. My cupbaords are filled with herbal teas. I love them.
I get so upset with the way the government is trying to take over natural health teachings and practice, all in the name of the almighty dollar, of course. This has been going on throughout history, and it's happening right now under our noses again.
DO NOT SUPPORT NATUROPATHIC LICENSURE PLEASE!!! It is an absolute trick!!! True traditional naturopaths do not want the State to mandate the art of folk medicine, folks! I am nationally recognized as a Certified Traditional Naturopath and I have spent years of my life studying natural health and holistic healing...40 years to be exact...and I have a Doctor of Naturopathy from a very fine and highly recommended college of natural health...and the group that is promoting this licensing attempt is trying to take over it all! If they have their way, Aunt Betty won't even be able to sell elderberry jam anymore, if you follow my drift...Please don't let the STATE define what natural medicine is!!!
Please read this share that I wrote awhile back on the topic:
Alert: BOYCOTT NATUROPATHIC LICENSURE!!! IT TAKES AWAY CHOICE FROM THE CONSUMER!!!

Cinnamon & Honey
Bet the drug companies won't like this one getting around. Facts on
honey and cinnamon: It is found that a mixture of honey and cinnamon
cures most diseases. Honey is produced in most of the countries of the
world. Scientists of today also accept honey as a "Ram Ban" (very
effective) medicine for all kinds of diseases. Honey can be used
without any side effects for any kind of diseases.
Today's science says that even though honey is sweet, if taken in the right dosage as a medicine, it does not harm diabetic patients. Weekly World News, a magazine in Canada, on its issue dated 17 January, 1995 has given the following list of diseases that can be cured by honey and cinnamon as researched by western scientists:
HEART DISEASES:
Make a paste of honey and cinnamon powder, apply on bread, instead of
jelly and jam, and eat it regularly for breakfast. It reduces the
cholesterol in the arteries and saves the patient from heart attack.
Also those who have already had an attack, if they do this process
daily, they are kept miles away from the next attack. Regular use of
the above process relieves loss of breath and strengthens the heart
beat. In America and Canada, various nursing homes have treated
patients successfully and have found that as you age, the arteries and
veins lose their flexibility and get clogged; honey and cinnamon
revitalize the arteries and veins.
ARTHRITIS:
Arthritis patients may take daily, morning, and night, one cup of hot
water with two spoons of honey and one small teaspoon of cinnamon
powder. If taken regularly even chronic arthritis can be cured. In a
recent research conducted at the Copenhagen University, it was found
that when the doctors treated their patients with a mixture of one
tablespoon Honey and half teaspoon Cinnamon powder before breakfast,
they found that within a week, out of the 200 people so treated,
practically 73 patients were totally relieved of pain, and within a
month, mostly all the
patients who could not walk or move around because of arthritis started walking without pain.
BLADDER INFECTIONS:
Take two tablespoons of cinnamon powder and one teaspoon of honey in a
glass of lukewarm water and drink it. It destroys the germs in the
bladder.
TOOTHACHE:
Make a paste of one teaspoon of cinnamon powder and five teaspoons of
honey and apply on the aching tooth. This may be applied three times a
day until the tooth stops aching.
CHOLESTEROL:
Two tablespoons of honey and three teaspoons of Cinnamon Powder mixed
in 16 ounces of tea water, given to a cholesterol patient were found to
reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood by 10 percent within two
hours. As mentioned for arthritic patients, if taken three times a day,
any chronic cholesterol is cured.
According to information received in the said journal, pure honey taken with food daily relieves complaints of cholesterol. (By the way. if you're taking cholesterol medicine STOP! They all contain STATIN which weaken your muscles...including YOUR HEARTand none has been shown to stop heart attacks or strokes!!!!
COLDS:
Those suffering from common or severe colds should take one tablespoon
lukewarm honey with 1/4 spoon cinnamon powder daily for three days.
This process will cure most chronic cough, cold, and clear the sinuses.
UPSET STOMACH:
Honey taken with cinnamon powder cures stomach ache and also clears stomach ulcers from the root.
GAS:
According to the studies done in India and Japan, it is revealed that
if honey is taken with cinnamon powder the stomach is relieved of gas.
IMMUNE SYSTEM:
Daily use of honey and cinnamon powder strengthens the immune system
and protects the body from bacteria and viral attacks. Scientists have
found that honey has various vitamins and iron in large amounts.
Constant use of honey strengthens the white blood corpuscles to fight
bacteria and viral diseases.
INDIGESTION:
Cinnamon powder sprinkled on two tablespoons of honey taken before food relieves acidity and digests the heaviest of meals.
INFLUENZA:
A scientist in Spain has proved that honey contains a natural
Ingredient which kills the influenza germs and saves the patient from
flu.
LONGEVITY:
Tea made with honey and cinnamon powder, when taken regularly, arrests
the ravages of old age. Take four spoons of honey, one spoon of
cinnamon powder and three cups of water and boil to make like tea.
Drink 1/4 cup, three to four times a day. It keeps the skin fresh and
soft and arrests old age. Life spans also increases and even a 100 year
old, starts performing the chores of a 20-year-old.
PIMPLES:
Three tablespoons of honey and one teaspoon of cinnamon powder paste.
Apply this paste on the pimples before sleeping and wash it next
morning with warm water. If done daily for two weeks, it removes
pimples from the root.
SKIN INFECTIONS:
Applying honey and cinnamon powder in equal parts on the affected parts cures eczema, ringworm and all types of skin infections.
WEIGHT LOSS:
Daily in the morning one half hour before breakfast on an empty stomach
and at night before sleeping, drink honey and cinnamon powder boiled in
one cup of water. If taken regularly, it reduces the weight of even the
most obese person. Also, drinking this mixture regularly does not allow
the fat to accumulate in the body even though the person may eat a high
calorie diet.
CANCER:
Recent research in Japan and Australia has revealed that advanced
cancer of the stomach

Both of my dogs shed terribly. One dogs tail was bald. I changed their diet to soup. LOL I buy only organic beef fed NO soy. I then cook burger add 4 potatoes and organic pasta. This makes about 4 days of food for 1 big dog and 1 small dog. They love it! Both have stopped shedding and are healthy happy dogs!
Also on the black elder berry? I make my own. I have found that if I eat something nasty with GMO corn/citric acid, I get a gallbladder attack. 3 glasses of the wine drank fairly quickly (Do not slam it!) LOL allows me to sleep pain free. I wake up the next day with no pain at all. It is like I never had an attack. Yet the pain meds the doctor gave me, left me sore ALL day long from one attack. I now do not ever take any pain meds for anything.

As doctor mom, I am always looking for good ideas, and this group has been a great help. I think it's high time I give a little something back.
I have been using yarrow leaf (fresh or dried) for years, to treat wounds of all sorts (except burns, for which we use aloe). With 3 kids, and 2 dogs, we do have a variety.
I gather the leaves myself, put a few in boiling water and use it as a compress. The most impressive results were when my son stepped on a nail. Bad news, and the site was looking quite infected by the time I saw it several hours after the fact. I boiled a little water, added yarrow leaf and some crushed garlic, then soaked his foot in the water. Later I wrapped the slightly 'wrung' leaf and garlic onto his foot. Checking on it a couple hours later there was improvement, so we continued this treatment for several days, all better.
When hiking, there is almost always some yarrow around, and many a scratch or bite has been rubbed with a squeezed leaf. I keep a small jar of yarrow leaf 'tea stuff' (leaves and a little water) in the fridge, and we use it much like one would use neosporin, a little piece of leaf, on the wound, held in place by a bandaid. When the wound is 'wet', I use dried leaf, rubbed to a powdery consistency. These seem to prevent infection and speed healing.
The flowers we use sparingly, along with nettle, raspberry leaf, elder flower and a little licorice, to make a 'common cold' tea, which eases coughing and congestion and speeds recovery.
