Dear Dr. Eshelman,

Your activism just made a huge difference. Six weeks ago we called on you to help end the cruel and unnecessary use of live dogs in the University of Michigan’s trauma training course. Thousands of you took action—and the school listened! Today, the University of Michigan announced that it will use only simulators in the Advanced Trauma Life Support course.

You have sent more than 20,000 e-mails to University of Michigan (U-M) administrators, asking them to use nonanimal training methods in their Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATL course. The school’s Graduate Medical Education Committee recently met and decided that it agrees with you. No dogs or other animals will be killed in the school’s ATLS course, according to a university statement.

Your hard work helped end animal suffering and improve medical education in Michigan. Now we need your help to do the same thing in New Jersey. While more than 90 percent of United States and Canadian facilities no longer use animals for ATLS training, University Hospital in Newark, part of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), continues to use live pigs for its course, despite the availability of nonanimal alternatives like the TraumaMan System from Simulab. The hospital’s next ATLS course is scheduled for March 13.

Please e-mail, call, or write to UMDNJ president William Owen Jr., M.D., and politely ask him to end animal use in University Hospital’s ATLS course. Being polite is the most effective way to help these animals. Send an automatic e-mail.

Dear Dr. Eshelman,

Just seven days after PCRM launched its public effort to end the use of live dogs from a local animal shelter for Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATL training at Idaho State University (ISU), the school announced it would end the practice! We couldn’t have done it without your calls, e-mails, and letters to the school’s president.

An Idaho State Journal article published yesterday stated that ISU “announced Friday it has suspended the use of live dogs . . .” In the future, the course will use “high-tech mannequins that simulate human functions.” PCRM’s campaign against ISU’s use of dogs sparked other media coverage in Pocatello, Boise, and elsewhere, raising awareness of this issue among people in Idaho and across the region.

Your swift work has helped end animal suffering and improve medical education in Idaho. Now we need your help to do the same thing in New York. While over 90 percent of U.S. and Canadian facilities no longer use animals for ATLS training, Albany Medical Center (AMC) continues to use live pigs for these courses, despite the availability of nonanimal alternatives like the TraumaMan System from Simulab. Please e-mail, call, or write to AMC president and CEO James J. Barba and politely ask him to end animal use in the institution’s ATLS courses. Being polite is the most effective way to help these animals. Send an automatic e-mail.

On Nov. 12, 2008, PCRM will file an official complaint with the U.S. Department of Agriculture citing the unlawful use of live animals by AMC. The complaint cites an ongoing 2007-2008 survey by PCRM, which has so far received responses from 193 U.S. facilities offering ATLS courses. The survey has found that 177 of those facilities (more than 90 percent) exclusively use nonanimal models for instruction. In addition, the vast majority of those 177 facilities exclusively use the TraumaMan System.

On Friday, Nov. 7, the Albany Times Union carried an article about our federal complaint.

Learn more about the TraumaMan System and SimMan. If you have any questions, please contact me at rmerkley@pcrm.org or 202-686-2210, ext. 336. Thanks so much for your help!

Wildlife Victories!

Thanks to people like you, this week saw many victories for our wildlife and wild places.

We will continue to provide a voice for our wolves, polar bears and other imperiled creatures -- making sure our elected officials do the right thing for our wildlife.

Thanks for all your support!

Dear Mary,

This was an amazing week for our wildlife and wild places. Thanks to the support of people like you, our wolves, polar bears and other imperiled creatures have a brighter future.

But it isn’t just the enormous win I told you about yesterday -- the defeat of House Resources Chair and America’s #1 Wildlife Villain, Rep. Richard Pombo. Conservation wins came on several fronts in Tuesday’s elections:

  • Defenders Action Fund helped defeat anti-wildlife candidates in 14 House races across the country, sending more pro-wildlife votes to Washington, DC (see below for the list of wins).
  • According to media accounts, control of the Senate has also changed -- albeit by a very slim margin. Needless to say, the Congressional landscape will be fundamentally different from the current anti-environment Congress.
  • Changes in Congress will provide much-needed oversight of an anti-wildlife Bush Administration that's cozy with Big Oil and other special interests.
  • In state elections, voters in California, Idaho and Washington rejected deceptive ballot initiatives backed by greedy developers that would have undermined land use and environmental regulations.

These victories are only the beginning. The American people have spoken out in favor of forward-thinking environmental policy -- and against elected leaders that pander to special interests at the expense of our wildlife and wild places.

Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund will continue to hold our elected officials accountable and make sure our most imperiled creatures are protected for future generations to enjoy.

Thanks so much for all your support in these amazing victories!

Sincerely,

Rodger Schlickeisen

No Tax Cuts for Trophy Hunters! August 04, 2006 5:22 PM

https://community.hsus.org/ct/0daelYs1QR6l/

Victory for Hunted Exotics (and Taxpayers)
For years, big game trophy hunters have been sticking American taxpayers with the bill for their hunting vacations. A two-year investigation by The HSUS revealed that some trophy hunters are shooting rare animals around the world and donating their mounted prizes to phony museums so that they can take a tax deduction. A comprehensive pensions bill passed last week by the House and last night by the Senate contains provisions that tighten the laws on charitable giving and closes this trophy hunting tax scam loophole.

There is nothing charitable about shooting rare animals and writing off the cost. Closing this loophole will help save rare wildlife around the world and save American taxpayers an estimated $43 million over the next decade. More...

HOOTERS STORY A HAPPY ONE July 25, 2006 5:29 PM

Dear brenda,

Imagine facing certain death simply because there was no place to call home, no family to welcome you in. The sad truth is that over 5 million homeless dogs and cats face that reality every year in this country. These innocent pets are euthanized simply because there is not enough room for them.

Every week, North Shore Animal League America travels near and far visiting shelters that are at full capacity - shelters that euthanize due to overcrowding and the amount of time animals remain there. The League rescues perfectly healthy, loving animals that in some cases only have moments left to be saved.

In January 2005, a young dog named Hootie was running out of time. He was scheduled to be euthanized because his shelter was overcrowded.

Cont.. Ralph Lauren to drop fur June 12, 2006 3:58 PM

Huge news: After months of vigorous negotiations, we have won a major victory for animals killed for their fur and skins—and I want you to be the first to hear about it.

Polo Ralph Lauren—one of the most widely recognized consumer brands in the world—has publicly announced that it will eliminate the use of fur in all its merchandise and home collections, starting with its holiday collection, in all its stores around the world. Read more about how this important victory came to be.

I assure you that it is only because of your vital support that this victory has occurred.

As a result of PETA's behind-the-scenes pressure and eye-opening anti-fur investigations that have struck a chord with ethical consumers, Ralph Lauren joins an ever-increasing number of retailers that are turning their backs on fur. With your help, in the last year alone, PETA has made significant progress in the fight for animals who are slaughtered for their fur—including getting other major companies like J.Crew, Ann Taylor, and The Limited (including all the company's brands, such as Victoria's Secret) to pull fur from their stores forever!

This work and this victory represent a watershed event for the animal rights movement and for fur-bearing animals. For that, I want to sincerely thank you. Your support has truly meant a world of difference in this campaign, as it has given us the resources and the help that we need. It has allowed us to add new depth and new tactics to our campaign to stop the international fur trade—which have led to new clout and new successes for animals.

As important as this victory is, there is much more work to be done. With your help, we can expand our precedent-setting work to expose the hideous cruelty to animals that is the norm in the fur trade, educate consumers, push designers and retailers to stop using fur, and help bring an end to the horrible cruelty that animals, including dogs and cats, suffer for the sake of "fashion." We have a list of other corporate targets that we're already trying to get to join Ralph Lauren in renouncing fur, and we won't stop as long as animals are suffering. Now is the time to use the momentum from this victory to change the hearts, minds, and practices of so many others in the fashion industry.

With kind regards,
Ingrid Newkirk
Ingrid E. Newkirk
President

P.S. Thank you so much for all that you do to help animals. Read more about exactly how our efforts brought Polo Ralph Lauren to this important decision to no longer use and promote fur.

Vibe,

Sweetie I do think It's related to Care2. I have no doubts really.  It happens in at least one other group also. Possibly 2 groups.

Too many things to explain in a post & I don't want to waste your site discussing this here.

A few quick things...It's so slow while composing that you have to wait for each letter to display slowly & catch up. A pretty extreme delay & wait.   If you need to backup or delete ,It's the same.Every letter is so slow to delete.

I preview and it displays one way and posts another . Plus it cuts off the post after it was previewed and posted. It goes back and cuts it off.

A few more things too...

The odd thing?  It's not doing it now for the 1st time ever .This exact stuff happens in 1/2 other groups also. I figure it must be Care2

Vibe,Don't worry about it unless it rejects completely...

Shaw's Supermarkets endorses Food Marketing Institute's Animal Welfare Policy.  Furthermore, Shaw's supports programs that strengthen animal welfare and will only do business with vendors who follow the Animal Welfare Guidelines established by their respective trade and/or animal welfare certification organizations.

USDA/APHIS standards of humane animal care and treatment must be satisfied through all stages of the animal's life (i.e. being raised, transported or processed.)  Shaw's suppliers must participate in programs that through routine monitoring verify that their practices comply with the Animal Welfare Act.
