Great Lesbian Movies February 19, 2006 11:09 AM

What movies have you seen and liked/loved that had Women Loving Women themes?† Doesn't need to be Oscar-calibur, just a movie that you saw and enjoyed...

††† †††

D.E.B.S. February 19, 2006 11:21 AM

I recently saw D.E.B.S. for the first time and I'm obsessed now!† It's based on a comic book that was written by director Angela Robinson when she was in college.† It's totally a spy-spoof, very satirical, so don't try and take it too seriously.† The main plot twist is that the leader of a crime-fighting team falls in love with the villian they are trying to capture... and both happen to be young women.† The movie doesn't make a big show†about being a lesbian, I think it tries to just say†When it's love, it's love!

And for any Jordana Brewster fans out there, she plays the villian!† She is so fantastic and sexy in this movie!

My all time favorite is Better Than Chocolate.

 February 19, 2006 4:32 PM

Fried Green Tomatoes was excellent. Desert Heat, an older†movie was very good, it was great to see a movie that didn't mence words. If These Walls Could Talk 2, with Ellen Degeneres, Sharon Stone, and others, about lesbians through the 70's, 80's, and 90's, was very well done. And seeing Cher play a lesbian in Silkwood was a great shot in the arm for us.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]
Ooh, yeah! February 19, 2006 6:38 PM

Yes!† I love Fried Green Tomatoes, and If These Walls Could Talk 2!† I have wanted to see Better Than Chocolate... I should make a point to see that...

[ send green star]  [ accepted]

 February 21, 2006 4:25 AM

I Love "If these walls could talk2"!
"2 girls in love" was my first lesbian-movie with Laurel Holloman.
"Bound", I love Gina Gershon alias Corky.
"Boys on the side" with Whoopi Goldberg and Drew Barrymore.
"When the night is falling" ... Is not one of my favorites..
"High Art" - Never seen it..
"F*cking ¬mal" Is a cute story

Ooh, yeah!† "High Art!"† Kerstin, you should see it.† I own it and I don't watch it nearly enough.† It's sad, but so great...

High Art

I have never seen any of the mentioned movies except for Fried Green Tomatoes, and I cannot remember seeing any lesbian scenes at all in it. Can someone please remind me please??†I would be eternally grateful  [ send green star]  [ accepted]
Fried Green Tomatos & Lesbian Scenes February 21, 2006 5:54 PM

Although Fried Green Tomatos was an excellent movie, it didn't have any lesbian scenes in it that I remember.

I forgot about Bound with Jennifer Tilly and Gina Gershon.† That was one hot movie!†
[ send green star]  [ accepted]
 February 21, 2006 7:52 PM

It was definately implied. Watch it again, iggy was so butch. The bible verse† that Ruth sent iggy out of the book of Ruth 1 16 and 17 said and I quote whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God; Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried; the lord do so to me and more also, if ought but death part the and me.

Any way there was no sex but I didn't know there had to be sex to be a lesbian movie.† Ruth Also said in court that iggy was her best friend and she loved her.

I cry when†Ruth dies. Because the bond those two women share is more special than a lot of relationships I have had and seen.

And I do think they kissed once when Ruth goes looking for iggy early in the movie and iggy gets her drunk, it was Ruths birthday.

It is one of those movies where there shoud have been a love scene for sure.

Thank you very much Glenna I was not really meaning sex scenes or nakedness, I just could not remember them ever kissing. But yeah, they did have an amazing bond. I will definitely have to watch that movie again. My grandma has it on VHS.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]
 February 23, 2006 11:31 AM

I agree with you Kat- Better Than Chocolate is hands down my favorite lesbian movie!† You have to see it asap Tracy- it is wonderful!† High Art, If These Walls Could Talk 2 and Fried Green Tomatoes are all also excellent movies.† Another one which isn't the greatest acting or plot, but is still not bad, is Go Fish.† It used to be a favorite of mine in college, but I rented again years later only to be a little dissapointed.† Another really cute one is But I'm A Cheerleader (I hope I have the title right).†  [ send green star]  [ accepted]
Yay Erin! February 24, 2006 10:24 AM

I love "But I'm a Cheerleader"!† I have such a crush on Clea Duvall partly because of that movie.† It's such a funny take on the stereotypes, and I love that it feels like a John Waters movie.

I see that picture of High Art didn't come out... here's another one...

[ send green star]  [ accepted]

 February 24, 2006 12:24 PM

I agree with you Tracy: Clea is adorable (would love to take her home with me, actually...)† I need to get my hands on a copy of that movie sometime soon because I've only seen it once and it was a long time ago†

"Never Met Picasso"?† With Margo Kidder?† Georgie Ragsdale(who plays her lover) is an old college friend of mine(actually, she was†one of my first Lesbian experiences), but I've lost touch with her and can never seem to find the movie/DVD.†

Any help here?

b.t.w.... February 25, 2006 6:30 PM

..."It's In The Water" is hilarious.† Probably considered a 'B' level movie, but still hilarious.† It was done here in Dallas and quite a few 'locals' were in it.

movies movies movies :D February 25, 2006 6:37 PM

IN the water=Satyre of stupidity of straight people! i loved it! Saw it several times and it is hillarious! Basically one gay man who has Aids, spread the rumors that if there are so many gays in their community it is because it is in the local water! People freak out and buy bottled water!!!

THat is only one aspect of the movie, it goes deeper (yups!) than that and it is definitly worth it Check it out!

Fire, claire of the moon, better than chocolate, tipping the velvet February 25, 2006 6:55 PM

Fire is located in India and is about women's condition and the love of 2 women. It is gentle at the same time powerfull, fun and sad....

Tipping the velvet...more for the gender bender minds. A cute young woman at the end of the 18th century i think or begining of the 19th (somewhere in there hehehe) use her androgenous looks to earn money from the streets...and became one of the best female performer as a male impersonator that England ever had at the time. Besides at this time, women weren't able to go on state and play women's role...but as men, they were able to play without going to jail...

Claire of the moon=Canadian movie i think that is sweet and beautifull love story between 2 women.

My favorite canadian lesbian story is one called "1 minute" or something like is about a cyclist who is a woman who has a nasty accident ( you have to love those cyclists!!!) and has to start a new life,...the girl used to be a pro cycler before her is a wonderfull story if you love cycling if you don't, i am sure that it might be boring like hell....

Better than chocolate i think is also from Canada and definitly now a classic as a lesbian movie...i really liked it too.

Definately "Better than Chocolate..."  [ send green star]  [ accepted]
 March 13, 2006 11:58 PM

Thought of another one... "Henry & June."† This one is about Anais Nin and her affairs with†Henry Miller and his wife, June.† I found the book to be quite a bit more sensual, but I did enjoy the movie quite a bit!† Uma Thurman plays June.

[ send green star]  [ accepted]
 March 14, 2006 8:41 AM

Thanks for bringing that one up Tracy!- I love Henry and June.† Anais Nin is quite a woman.† It's kind of neat really (and this has nothing to do with the movie)†because that whole group of literary folk (the Bloomsbury group) were all bisexual and involved with one another- Henry Miller, June, and Nin is just one of the more famous love triangles.† I've always found their relationships†particulary interesting considering the times in which they lived.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]
 March 15, 2006 4:22 AM

I will try to see the movie "Henry and June" sounds very nice. Or I will look for the book, I love sensuality  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Great lesbian movies March 23, 2006 8:03 AM

I also loved fried Green Tomatoes and I never thought that anyone else saw it the way that I did.† It reminded me of my girlfriend and myself in several scenes, but I thought I was just projected my life into the film.† Thanks, Guys!† Also, we rented High Tension from Netflix without knowing it had a lesbian theme.† If you like thrillers, it is really great!† We bought it!† Another one I am surprised no one posted is Love Letter with Ellen De Generes.† My girlfriend bought it for me for Christmas!† It is about a letter that is found and everyone thinks it is meant for them.† A whole town - all ages and life styles are affected and the sweet part is who it turns out to be and how long they were writing.† A good one to watch - it shows how alike everyone is in love and how similiar† falling in love is no matter who is doing the falling. Thanks for the other movie titles.† i wrote them all down!† Virginia  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

I've been getting a cable channel called Logo.† It's a channel for GLBT people.† it has many movies including all of the ones mentioned by others, as well as documentaries, news features, series.† I have been enjoying a channel geared to my interests.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]
Better then chocolate and Logo April 12, 2006 12:57 PM

I had started to watch Better then Chocolate today and more then half way through it, It had messed up. I rented it on DVD. So far I liked it and wished I had gotten to see the rest of it. Wow.

Logo is another channel that I have been watching alot of lately especially at night after my daughter goes to bed. Not sure what is on during the day on that channel. I had just found the channel about a month ago. Told a freind of mine about it at work and she dont get that channel but have been wanting to watch it.She dont get that channel. I have been watching it ever since I seen it.

But when I can get a chance I will swap the other movie for a different one so that I can finish watching it.

RENT April 19, 2006 11:48 AM

Rent is pretty good, Mostly a musical but has gays and lesbians in it. It gets sad at the end because they also deal with drugs and aids.

I liked what I saw so far of Better then chocolate but almost over half way through it the DVD messed up so I took it back to Blockbuster. The other DVD was already checked out so I couldnt rent that one out. Will grab it when I can.

Oh I did buy the book Better then chocolate.

I loved all of the movies mentioned. Bound was my favorite although Fried Green tomatos was my favorite too. I really liked them all.† Fire was a great movie too and I haven't seen D. E. B. S, for some reason or other I keep passing it up. I'll have to add it to my collection, since I have all of the above mentioned.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]
Frida April 20, 2006 4:50 PM

So many movies out there that I haven't seen--this topic list would make a great Must Watch list! I loved "Better than Chocolate". There is also this obscure Chinese movie I saw a few years ago that was excellent. I mused to my friend that it'd be cool if the leading girl would fall for this secondary girl character instead of the obvious boy. And Lo! It actually happened. Wow. Wish I could remember the title.

I also really liked "Frida". There's not really *enough* of the Women Loving Women in there to satisfy.. but there's a teensy bit that I liked.

Better than Chocolate is very good.† For a great laught and all around good one I like It must be in the water.† When her mom goes on her tirade I can just see my mom a going.† The only cliche I think the old bag misses is "it's just a phase".

So I may have to buy Aimee and Jaguar (maybe just so I can spell her name right)† I love to own my movies. I can watch most of them over and over and then watch them with the voices telling about how they made the movie etx.† Makes it more interesting.† So may just order the movie for Lee.†

I just wish I could run into best buy or target and snag it off the shelf.† Oh well at least there is e-bay.

Saw the trailer for Imagine me and you.† It sounds like it could be good. Not for sale yet on tla anyway.

We need more lesbian flicks...

I'm hoping to have more movies to add to our list fairly soon.† My Netflix queue is filled with the lesbian movies that you ladies are recommending, and also others that I have heard of.† I'll get back to you all with reviews!!†

imagine Me and you--Fire and Kinky boots! May 18, 2006 11:29 PM

It is cute and light wiht some drama played in a sweet way i think. I enjoyed it so did my friend

Kinky boots is based on a true story. It is a†queer movie not a lesbian movie, but it is sweet and pretty interresting how they deal with the gender issue. I really enjoyed it.

Fire is powerfull! clash of culture, shows how little respects women got in this specific area of india...the love between the women is very sweet, powerfull and cross many boundaries...a must see

[ send green star]  [ accepted]

 May 19, 2006 6:05 AM

Yes thanks again for recommending it.† I think I got it with a couple of others, they were three for twenty dollars. Well worth it. I just love the way she falls for her.† It is cute when Lucy tells her friend that Amy "is into me".† Movie definitely plays that out.† It is a cute little movie.† I think my daughter and son would even like it.† He is such a teenager, when I told him the movie had lesbians in it he made a face and said eewww.† I said what?† He said he doesn't mind the lesbians it is the fact that his mom said it.† Remember moms don't have sex!

I've been wanting to see Fire. The repression of women tho, not sure I would like it. We do even with our problems here have it so much better than others.†

Wish French Twist would come out in english.† MY boi really likes that film but the subtitles are a downer. I guess I could learn french.† But I think that would take too long.

Bye for now.

Saving Face June 03, 2006 8:16 PM

Just saw this film last night. Joan Chen plays the mother of one of the lesbian leads. It's a nice romantic comedy about being yourself and loving who you love no matter gender or age or cultural & family repression. I love the subplot that involves Chen who is 48 years old and unmarried but pregnant. Rent this film....

Foxfire is very powerful but it doesn't have enough of the woman loving woman- it teases you-provokes you and makes you desire it but there was not enough... Angelina Jolie is in it and so is Hedy Buress- mmm.

But, I'm a Cheerleader was very cheesy- and I agree Clea Duvall was worth watching the entire film.

I have watched "Imagine Me & You", finally.† It's very sweet, if not very realistic.† It seemed to me to follow sort of a fairy tale style.

There was quite a lack of girl-on-girl action (just some kissing), but I did†very much†enjoy watching Rachel visibly fall in love with Lucy.† You could just see her longing, her need to touch her... (I'm sure we've all been there!! )

I was at Target and lo and behold they had Imagine me and you. So I bought it.† I did enjoy it also. Bring snacks and watch it. right now we don't have cable so don't get it.

I don't know that I have any to recommend that haven't already been mentioned here.† But I do have a number of movies on my Netflix queue that might be good!:† Go Fish, Amour de Femme, Therese and Isabelle, 2 Girls In Love, Better Than Chocolate, Aimee and Jaguar, It's In the Water, Claire of the Moon, Saving Face, Julie Johnson.† I also got Tipping The Velvet, and I liked it quite a bit.† That might be a good one to watch with your friend!

hi September 20, 2006 8:26 PM

††† This group is great! When I was 20 and living with my boyfriend at the time, I used to sit and watch Fried Green Tomatoes alot when he was gone at work. Then later I heard people calling it a lesbian movie. But I honestly just loved the characters and how they deeply loved and cared for one another. It actually showed female characters who had depth, and not just side characters to leading males, which was rather rare at that time.
††† I also liked Gia, but it's very heartbreaking. Prepare to cry if you are going to watch it. I've not really seen many other so-called lesbian or women loving women movies, but I do see many listed on this message board that now I'm curious and would like to watch. Also, Netflix has a good list in their lesbian category. Thanks for all the suggestions and for starting this message board!

Crystal, I so agree with you!!† Fried Green Tomatoes is just incredible because of the love between the two friends.† Whether or not it's "lesbian," who knows.† It's just really wonderful.† And Gia is one of my all-time favs.† I watched it about every other day one year in college.† My mother actually sent it to me in a care package because she knew how much I liked it (come to think of it, she bought me the DVD later, too!)† But you're right, it is heartbreaking.† It's so sad to see her decline.

I just watched Therese & Isabelle.† It's from the 60s, b/w, the story of two girls at boarding school who fall in love.† The first hour was pretty boring, but it got pretty hot after that.† Not a lot of graphic visual stuff, but gorgeous nudity and graphic descriptions.† Very cool if you're into old movies.† (It seems older than it actually is, I think.)

great lesbian movies August 21, 2010 12:02 PM

One of my favorites was Personal Best starring Mariel Hemingway.  In one memorable scene she asked and open and willing lover what she should do.  The other woman said: "Just do what you feel."

Great Lesbian Movie: The Children's Hour August 22, 2010 6:54 PM

The Children's Hour (1961)
Starring Audrey Hepburn, Shirley MacLaine & James Garner.
Wonderful movie that must have been very controversial in 1961. Nothing explicit but lesbianism was the focus of the story, a very powerful story.
This was a groundbreaking movie with an all star cast. Still holds up very well today.
The story and script was adapted from a 1930's stage play of the same title.
