Consider this to be an ongoing travelouge of the City of Austin. Also a place where we can meet, discuss events, brag about our town and share information.
Feel free to start a thread about any Austin subject, questions or just general chatter. I will start a few opening threads, please add as you see fit.
Let us get to know each other and show the world that Austin is a friendly place.

Hello Texas and Austin! I have deep family roots in Austin, being related to Maribeaux Lamar, the first foundations of government in Texas. My sister lived in Austin for 8 years prior to her husbands accepting a job in Thailand , after Bush jerked the contracts from the government superfund lab he worked for... I come to austin a few times a year... I love Austin.

Thank you for the invitation Woodrow. I'm not from Austin, but from Stockholm in Sweden. Allthough, Austin is very high on my Wishlist for places to visit. One of my best friends is moving there in a couple of months and I hope to go visit her later this year - so I'm really looking forward to learn some about the city and it's surroundings from you all!
Hugz All Around!

I spent 8 years in North Central Texas (I think that's what they call the DFW area). I had been to Houston about 20 years ago, but haven't made it to Austin, yet.

I actually live in Austin... February 02, 2006 5:07 PM
Subjec = just a trend I noticed...
Woodrow, thank you for the group invitation.
I've lived in Austin for 14 years. I came here go to college at UT, and, like many, never left. I think Austin is a great city, although it would be better to me if it didn't get sooooo hot! I love the live music, restaurants, natural scenery, and the generally liberal leanings of the people and culture. I couldn't imagine being happy living anywhere else in Texas.
I'm happy to answer questions about Austin and give recommendations. I am also open to meeting new people. It would be cool to actually make a real friend, you know one you can actually see and go do things with as opposed to just exchanging messages online.
Actually on some of the Ebay groups I'm on several of us have met for dinners etc. We once had several of us meet in New Orleans during Ebay live. It was cool. You just gave me an idea. Perhaps If we get enough Austinites interested we could all meet at some restaurant or one of the parks, then share the get together in a thread here.
One thing that I have learned when meeting online friends in person. It is best to meet initialy in a small group at a neutral location, ie: Park, restaurant, etc.
That allows for a situation in which everyone gets to meet and nobody feels any pressure from anyone else.
Perhaps we can start thinking of starting a thread to see how many would be interested in a small get together and where would be the best place.
Hello, all! For those who don't know me, my name is Dennis. I'm a 39 yr "young" single part-time lobbyist and hobbyist living in NW Austin.

Hi everyone new to the group. This looks like a fun and interesting group. I moved to Austin in 2002 from Iowa City, Iowa. Both cities have alot in common as far as both being university towns, liberal mostly, diversity and the arts. i still have alot to learn about the town myself, although I am beginning to know my way around a little better....I just stay on the 'ole beatin' paths...lol
Thank you so much for the invitation. Looking over the posts and members, (and yes, Dennis, I noticed you were a member ...) I have to say, my interest was piqued. I also feel fairly guilty for having lived here for so long and have so little to offer...Though I think I did find one of the best spots for a clean and gorgeous view of downtown. I can't remember the name of the street it's on, but it's the dinosaur park, I think near Zilker Park. If you walk the back trail and climb what, at the time, felt like a small mountain, you have a perfect view of downtown at a good angle and distance. One of these days, I want to go back with a camera...
Thank you again for the invite, I hope everyone is having a good year so far.
Yep it is the "Dinosaur pit" at Zilker Park. My grand kids drag me there almost every weekend and at my age that hiking trail is either going to kill me or restore my stamina.
Dennis, glad to meet you. Yep, we will have a real live get together. Right now it looks like there are about 6 of us that are serious about it.
I will start working out the logistics in the next day or two. It will probably a Dutch treat type thing or a covered dish dinner or something like that.
I think Dutch Treat is the most practical. I wish I could afford to just treat everybody, but my poor SS check don't go far.
Figured this is the best place to post ~ I am not feeling good at all. May not be posting to any of my groups. But will certainly try to answer mails, phone calls...
There is true circumstance (yea, pomp too)...
So my priorities will be changing for things I need done!!
Cheers from Southern Ecotopia (Northern Cali)... August 01, 2006 2:09 PM
Hello Woodrow and Austin group folks...
I've never been to Austin, but consider it to be the most progressive and green city in TX, and as a green/sustainabilty networker I'd like to stay in touch, esp. for a potential eco-tourism connection between Austin and Northern Cali.
Another reason I joined the group is to share with you here the music gigs that my dear friend singer-songwriter Maia Sharp does in Austin. In fact she has a gig coming up real soon there, on August 19th (see announcement below). Maia is already know to many Austin music lovers, but if you're not aware of her awesome music, check out her website: http://www.maiasharp.com She and her dad Randy Sharp http://www.randysharp.ws/ co-wrote the lead song ("Home") on the Dixie Chicks CD of the same name.
