Hi Group;

Though not strictly an internet radio station, I volunteer for one of the strongest and best-supported campus and community radio stations in north america: CJSW 90.9fm in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

This station serves as the hub of alternative culture in Calgary and SW Alberta, broadcasting at a massive 4000 watts. We were one of the first radio stations to offer streaming live audio - you can listen live 24/7 at http://www.cjsw.com. CJSW is also a bastion for the left-of-centre community here - in a place that is often perceived as being exclusively conservative and intolerant.

Up until last night, I co-hosted a world music program called "speaking in tongues", sunday nights from 8-9 pm - I will now be switching to thursday mornings from 9-11, into a more mixed-music and spoken word slot. I think I'll call my new show "soapbox derby".

The station's programming is top-quality and incredibly diverse - Lots of the alt-rock, pop, punk, hip-hop, rpm, etc. that you hear on any old college radio station, but also local and syndicated spoken word programming, multicultural (we broadcast in 25-30 languages!), gay/lesbian/transgender shows, arts and culture, country, reggae, metal, folk, live local bands - and hundreds of shows (like mine, I hope), that defy silly genre pigeon-holing.

I don't know much about the technical aspects of running a radio station, internet or otherwise. I can tell you, though, that I love doing radio. I am not by nature a confrontational person, but I do have some pretty strong ideas on how we might make the world a better place, and most of them flap in the face of the status quo. Radio allows me to convey these ideas openly and without fear - at least, it allows me to get a bunch of stuff off my chest. At best, it allows me to share ideas, encourage discussion, and build community.

I would encourage all of you to get involved in radio - it will strengthen your community and make you feel as though you're making a real difference.

and thanks for your input on Community Radio. I`m sure your experience and knowledge there will help us here. Probably lots of stuff applicable to Internet Radio can be learned from Community and Broadcast Radio DJ`s. You are the 4th member so far with DJ experience, on and off the Internet.
