We are located midway between Dallas and Fort Worth just south of I-30 which connects the two. Just north of I-30 is a former Safari Park area with considerable undeveloped area.

Two weekends ago, I was cleaning up a tree cutting mess when all of the birds feeding along our eastern fence line took immediate flight. I glanced over to see a large hawk landing in the middle of the feeding area. It was unsuccessful in capturing any of the smaller birds. It sat for a few seconds before flying up to a limb overhanging the feed area. It scoped out the area for about a minute before taking flight. We live in a residential neighborhood and this is the first time an occurence such as this has taken place in the 18 years we have lived here. We have seen hawks circling to our north and have noticed they have gradually been moving southward in the more populated areas.

A few nights later, we were sitting out back and saw a porcupine walking the top of our neighbor's fence. In talking with a neighbor two houses over from us, he said he had a racoon in his front yard one morning the week before as he was leaving for work.

Things are changing and the wild is slowing moving amonst us as we keep moving out into their areas.

Since you posted the Ladybug post, I started looking for Ladybugs. The first day or so was futile, finding not a one. On the third day, I found several and tried doing what you did. It works! Now I can find them without trying! I had forgotten about attuning oneself to our entire surroundings and making oneself aware of the littliest beings.....

This past Wednesday, I went outside our ramp door at first break. I saw a ladybug which appeared to be dead laying in the shade on the concrete. I carefully picked it up and moved it to a spot in the sun further down the ramp. A co-worker came out to see what I was doing. We both proceeded back inside the main door and were talking when out of nowhere a ladybug landed on my arm. We both looked back to where I had moved the ladybug and it was gone. I took the one which was still on my arm and walked over to some shrubs where I managed to place it on a leaf. I cannot say the one which landed on my arm was the same one which I had moved into the sun ealier but it seems too much of a coincidence!

A similar occurence happened again yesterday with two ladybugs. They were not moving and I placed them in the sun. After a minute or so, both began walking around and later flew off. We have had overnight temps in the 40s and daytime temps in the 60s. Apparently the ladybugs go into a type of hibernation state with the cooler temps and reactivate with the heating.

A cold front passed through early this morning and it is only 78 degrees at 9:30 AM. A band of rain is approaching us about 150 miles out. We can only hope it holds together long enough to reach us. We had 8 tenths of an inch of rain this past week but we are so far down it barely made a dent in our shortfall.

Our poor plants took a beating from our drought. The Morning Glories are still blooming along with our Hibiscus. The Peace Lilly, Datura, and a few hardy Sunflowers are doing their best tosurvive and have small buds.

A large black and blue Butterfly and a handful of Honey Bees were working overtime trying to find any flowers to pollinate. I watched the Butterfly nosediving into what few flowers it could find which are deep trumpet type flowers. There just may be a bit of hope yet for the 2006 season!

It is currently 28 degrees with a light drizzle. Our bird feeders have been filled for the day and the birds are in a feeding frenzy. I was watching a few minutes ago and we had Sparrows, Doves, Bluejays, Mockingbirds, Grackles, and Cardinals all feeding together which is a bit of a rarity. Normally they feed separately but the cold has removed discriminatory aspects they might otherwise have. The male Cardinals were doing their normal thing of standing guard in a tree while their ladies ate. When the females finished, the males came down to get their share.

Hawk

I was on break several weeks ago and noticed a hawk fly out of a tree near the creek behind our building. It used its wings to clear the tree and began spiraling. With each rotation it rose higher and higher. The only movement was an occasional kick of a leg to keep it within the heat current. When it had reached a god fifty feet above the tree, it began to move toward the north and continued rising without moving it's wings. The grace and beauty of it was a gift to behold. I was witness to a pair of hawks today gliding effortlessly and appearing to be suspended at times much like a kite.

Hi,

Anybody got any input on the symbolism of whistle pigs? It's not unusual to see thm on the side of the roads-or more often than not- dead in the road.........but lately I've seen an unusual number of them-alive- and in groups..... Interprtations anyone?

The first time I went to the Bohemian Sanctuary, five large black dogs greeted me at the gate. The acted like they were going to tear me apart. Ross came out and got them settled down as best he could and invited me in with, "they won't hurt you!" I rather gingerly entered the gate and lo and behold, they fought each other over my attention. At first, Sheppy backed off but as I was introduced to each one. When Sheppy's turn came for an introduction. her whole rear end began wagging from side to side. I learned her nichname was Wiggle Butt!

I later learned that visit that she is very sensitive to people's energies and if she stays put, it was a good sign. With me, she stayed put and would vie for my attention alogside the others. I noticed with others, she would run into the back room and Ross had to coax her into going outside around whoever she did not like. She is quite a four footer and a special friend! My energies go out to her in this troubled time!

Our favorite ant deterent is powdered cinnamon. When we go camping, we sprinkle the cinnamon around the tent entrances. We have no problem with ants in our tent. To keep them away from our food areas, we give them a food offering away from where we want them to go. This keeps them more than busy working on it and we get to prepare and eat our food in peace.

In years past I was involved in a continuing battle with fire ants.  It seemed that everytime I went outside they bit me.  I have many scars on my feet from those bites.  I kept Diazonon around and regularly poisoned ant hills with it.  Three years ago, I moved to my current home - 5 acres dotted liberally with ant hills!  The war was on - hundreds of bites, dozens of bags of Diazanon.  All this while I devoted myself to a practice of prayer, healing work and teaching!!!  My husband counselled me against my war, but I wouldn't listen.  As last Spring approached, I finally saw the folly and destruction of these ways.  I sat by a particularly large ant hill at the base of a tree and poured out my heart.  I apologized for my acts and my thoughts.  I asked to start over - asked if we could be in right relationship with each other.  I pledged to honor the ants and their homes and asked for the same.  I left an offering of tobacco and an obsidian stone.  Immediately, everything changed. This year there were no ants in the house, the ant hills were smaller and fewer in the yard, there were no ants in the rose garden or near my outdoor bathtub or other well used places.  Most obvious,  for the first time in my life, I did not get bit by fire ants when I went outside - one day, I tripped  and actually fell into an ant hill.  I received one bite - the rest of the ants I brushed off me with no incident!  I am now living with and in appreciation for the ants on the land.  We all have a right to live and flourish.

The year before the deer story, three of us were camped in the same spot at Enchanted Rock. The first night was uneventful but on the second night, we had a visitor. It showed up as I was cooking supper and made several passes at our grill. We chased it off but it would return within a few minutes, bolder than before. The grill was too high for it to reach as it was a pole with the grill extended off the top.

We managed to eat supper with several passes made at the table while we were sitting there. I threw a bun off into the brush and it left us alone finally. Well afterwards, our guest was sitting at the table reading and I was off on a nature walk. I came back to find our visitor had climbed onto the bench on the far side of the table and was rumaging around. This while our camping guest was absorbed with reading. Our visitor saw me and grabbed a box of straws and took off through the brush. I tracked down the remains of the box by following straws which had fallen out. We had to secure the entire campsite that night and the following night. Several times during the night, we heard our visitor outside the tent flap trying to get inside where the food was.

I just love Humming birds

Once I/We lived at 4000 elevation in north cal.We were living in a tee-pee on 10 acres and a Humming bird built a nest in the tree near by,it's was very spiecial to watch.

But this year where I live now I saw Humming birds 3 diffrent times and they come buzzing really fast and then zoom away and this is in Nev.in my back and the front yard too.

The most recent thing that happened is I was driving home from the store and a Dove flew across my path and carrying a bunch of green grapes in beak,This happened last wenesday or so.And of coarse I thought this to be a sign and a very spiecial sight.

These are memories I charish and never forget

It is nearly 10 P.M. here in Texas on 10 November. I just walked our dogs outside and came back to our porch to look around. Something caught my eye in the bush just off the side of our porch. It was a hummingbird going crazy trying to hit every flower which is in bloom. Trust me when I say it had its task cut out for it as there are many tiny white flowers bloomed out right now. We have a cold front due in tonight and the temperatures are expected to drop in the mid 30s overnight the next several nights. The flowers will soon be gone so this apparently is a last ditch effort to get as much done as the poor little thing can accomplish. I watched it for a good five minutes before it disappeared out of the lit area.

One day 2 springs ago I saw a deer while I was in the car with a friend. We were parked on the side of the road where we knew the deer came near sometimes.  It stopped a few yards away and stared right at me, I felt so much love, had been down all day and felt such healing and calm, it was just what I needed!  There was a definate, uniistakeable connection between us.  We communicated on the deepest level, and of course I said thank you.  That day I didn't have my camera though and haven't seen any deer there since.

Greystar, we have seen how animals react to you and I would not be suprised to one day hear of birds landing on your shoulders! Is it you who is blessed by their encounters or the animals with their encounters with you? Or both? We have seen that peaceful stillness you have when you coax Sheppy into circle!

The Deer

There were six of us on our last camping trip to our favorite sacred site! We arrived Tuesday evening and chose our favorite spot as the campground was empty. As we proceeded to set up camp, we were surrounded by 30-40 deer. They kept well off in the distance except for one stag who ventured to within about 30 feet of us. I threw a piece of bread toward him and he ignored it, preferring to study us instead. After about 30 minutes or so, he turned and wandered off taking the herd with him as he left.

I was the first one up the next morning and had the coffee going when I heard something behind me. The stag had returned and had three does with him. I threw some bread crusts to the does and they readily accepted the treats. When they got within ten feet of me, the stag would stomp his hoof and they would retreat! Meanwhile, one of the others in our party had gottten up and saw what I was doing. They wanted to feed the deer and came racing up. The deer backed off big time and would not get any closer than 20 feet or so to the others.

That evening, one of the does brought her fawn back to us. The others tried feeding the fawn and it would get to within about 15 feet of them before its mother would stomp her hoof causing it to retreat. The others tired of this and went about cleaning up for the day. I got some bread and tried feeding the fawn. It made it to within about a foot of my outstretced hand. I think I could have actually touched it had it not been for one of the others in our party racing up to see if she could do the same. The fawn backed off and again would not get within 10 feet of her.

I was able to get a picture of the fawn the next day but just could not get it quite as close as that first time. I will see if I can get it scanned so that I can get it posted. Looking into those large black/brown eyes was something else.

Animal rights groups have gotten a law passed to make it illegal to feed wild animals as we did in the above story. I see their point especially during hunting season and having animals lured with food up to the hunters! And there are those who would take advantage of that! This experience was a special gift for me and one I will carry in my memory for the rest of this lifetime!

While traveling to meet a friend in the Tetons, I was passing along a river in Idaho and the thought of a particular friend at home kept nagging my mind. After a couple hours of knocking, I pulled over where I had phone reception and placed the call. She answered and I asked what was going on. She related that she was at the hospital with another friend whose husband had just suffered a massive heart event and was facing surgery and the outcome was unknown. I began to visualize as soon as I was off the phone. As I walked along the bank I noticed a bright red swath of blood on the opposite shore. I decided to build a small fire and cleanse the energy, invite healing or release whichever was needed. I began my prayers. I heard strong beating of wings and calls from above. As I followed the sounds I saw the arrival of the first of four eagles alight upon a large pine and survey the scene. I wrote a poem to the experience.

Animals are such great teachers because they're so connected with nature and aren't as distracted as we are, though we are connected too we don't feel that signal as strongly as they do.

By the way, I LOVE frogs!  I love all animals but frogs are one of my favorites!  "Ribbitt!"

Hey Roni, Where I live we see skinks all the time in the summer! A couple of months ago my ex was cleaning out the gutters of my house with my kids and they found a nest of skink eggs! They did displace them, dropped one and it hatched. It was so cool! I have a picture of it, but am not totally sure how to post it.skink

i have enjoyed reading everyones stories about some of thier animal contacts. in my picture, i have a skink lizard walking on me. we tried our hand at doing a small garden this year (we live in an apartment) because i didn't want to go through another season without trying to watch things grow. shortly after my husband started to dig the garden plot, the little guy in the picture started to show up on our porch. throughout the summer months, we have been visited several times by these particular breed of reptiles with the babies racing over and under the plants on the porch. thier lower half of thier body shining irredesent blues to purples. in the 4 years that i have lived here i have only seen reptiles about 3-4 times; this summer we have seen them atleast a dozen times. our children laughing with delight at them as much as i have done. my garden was a learning experience and prob. not one that most would consider a 'successful' garden (i only got 1 spaghetti squash) lol, but it has been a delightful experience and one that has taught me alot.

I was driving home from the Tibetan Buddhist Center in Knoxville one day where the resident monk had mentioned not killing snakes and frogs. My memory is slipping for the name of that kind of diety- but the gist was that these dieties usually pictured with mermaid like bodies often disguise themselves as snakes and frogs. They can be easily angered if killed in this form and can then persue the perpetrator for MANY lifetimes! Powerful. ---So I'm driving along zippy around a corner on a mountain road and here's this blacksnake accross the road- missed it! Yes, safe from that one. ---Then I look up and there's this red tailed hawk being harrassed by about half a dozen crows! Really being dogged! ----- More an American Indian spiritual thing there, but still one right after another! The message? Beats me, any ideas?
Maggie

I realize it's often difficult to notice the "lesson" or the message a wild animal may be trying to give us, and remaining open is key. Quieting the mind can sometimes be difficult. My chow/lab mix Maggie "decided" on her own, that she wanted to become my dog the night my hybrid passed away 2 yrs. ago. He was, what I would call my heart/soul dog. Sometimes I'd swear he asked Maggie to watch over me....it's uncanny sometimes. Maggie belonged to my friend-and after burying Bandit(hybrid)in her backyard, Maggie jumped in my lap(something she had never done to anyone)and laid her head across my heart for hours till I was done crying. When I finally left that house, and not taking her with me...she acted out in many ways. I knew she wanted to be with me, but was not allowed. One day she attacked another dog-it all ended up well. The dog is fine, and Maggie is happy with me. When I'm in need of a "boost"-she actually smiles with the corners of her mouth-showing no teeth, and her eyes flash-for just a split second. Providing that boost; causing me to smile back... I have so much to learn.
Momma Cat Lessons
Several years back, one of our female cats had two kittens. I was sitting at our table beneath our pecan tree and heard the sound of the cats climbing the tree behind me. I statrted watching to see what they were doing. The mother cat was in the lead and one of the kittens was attempting to follow her up the tree. She kept calling to it using that soft meow-purring sound. The kitten was having some difficulty and was making slow progress. Momma finally made it to a large limb four feet up the trunk. She kept coaxing the kitten until it finally made it. She rewarded it but licking it and cooing while she did that. After a bit, she turned and began walking the horizontal limb. She kept twitching her tail as an enticement for the kitten to play with it while she slowly moved across the limb. The kitten chased after her batting her tail. Momma cat went out about 6 feet or so then turned back toward the trunk of the tree and stepped over the kitten. The kitten got this dumbfounded look on its face like what just happened. The kitten made this akward turn and pursued the momma cat back to the trunk. She rewarded it again by licking on it and cooing softly. She repeated this out and back cycle two more times with the kitten following her each time. Upon the third completion, the kitten had mastered tree climbing and started exploring other higher limbs. Momma cat jumped to the ground and coaxed kitten number 2 to the tree and started the same process with it. Three times out and three times back. These type of things happen all around us everyday. But, are we taking the time to stop and learn from them? To go along with my cardinal story, we have a family of doves feeding in our yard. The male dove does not stand watch as the male cardinal did and still does, different styles for different birds. Brightest of Blessings with peace and Love-Greystar

Animals from the tree
Here a little memory of some friends a made among animals, it's rather sad, I actually cried a bit while writing this story. As I have written in my profile I lived in a tree for about half a year. The trees on which we build our platform was not all that high and standing on a slope, so on end of the platform there was ~6 m to the ground on the one side of the slope and ~8 m on the other side of the platform. The slope was covered with rather big stones and among these stones lived many creatures. Sitting in a platform ~48 hours in a row there is times when there is not much to do but watching the life around you. I learned to know a little family of mice, watched the parents bring home food for the kids, looked at the small mice playing around among the stones, watched them grow over the weeks and months. I often threw down raisins, peanuts and other food to watch the mice come out and collect them. It really warms my hearth thinking back at this little family of mice that I got to know so well. I had to leave the platform at some time. I hope the mice succeded in migrating before the machines starting destroying the slope that I and a few friends defended. When we decided to give up the platform for a last press-stunt I was so absorbed by media and the likes that I didn't think about helping thise little mice finding a new home. When I started thinking about them again it was to late ... I made a lot of other freinds among the animals living on and near that slope, for example one little bird came into my tent a few times to comfort me when things were hardest, it just landed on the platform and went around looking at it and inspected it while I sat as quiet as possible just watching it, it walked past my leg just a few centimeters away. Most of the animals i met were big enough to migrate so they probably made it. The birds lost another place to live but they hopefully will find somewhere else, hopefully all the other animals have found other homes and not returned to their former home, cause then they will risk being run over if they return to what now is a big motorway at the outskirts of Århus. By the way if you want to see a few pictures from our platform we have a homepage for our group: Jutlanders Against Superfluous Motorways, its mostly in danish but the pictures are still viewable if you don't understand that language. http://www.jmom.dk/_fotos/oversig1.htm
The Cardinals
Here again I have two tales to tell. One is rather sad and will make you angry but appears to have ended well. We do our part for our winged friends, in having numerous bird feeders around the Sanctuary. Ember was gone for the weekend and the task of filling up the feederd belonged to me. A male cardinal was sitting in a tree waiting for me to fill up the feeders. After completeing the task, I sat down at our outdoor table and started reading. The male cardinal came over to a tree next to me and proceeded to get closer and closer. I finally stopped reading and started paying attention to his movements. He finally landed on a limb about three feet above me. I cautiously and slowly looked up at him. He was turning his head from side to side and studying me. This lasted for several minutes before he finally took off and landed in a tree just above one of the feeders. He began a rythmic chirping and within a minute, a female cardinal appeared at the feeder along with three young cardinals. They proceeded to ground feed with the male standing guard overhead. After about ten minutes, one of our cats came outside. The male immediately gave alarm and the others took flight. I watched this behavior for many days afterward and have been rewarded by it over the years. This is one of those somethings we have to simply open our eyes to see. This next story took place in our warehouse. One day we had a pair of male and female cardinals inside the warehouse, I tried to walk them out and one pair left. An hour or so later, I heard this ear piercing chirping of desparation. I found the female cardinal had got herself trapped in a glue trap. I carefully picked her and the glue paper up and headed for the door. My coworkers came over to see what the rukus was about and basically said the only thing that could be done was to put her out of her misery. I had other thoughts and took her out into the parking lot. I took hold of as gently as I could. She initially tried pecking at my hand but finally relaxed and loooked at me with such a pitiful look. I pulled her loose as gently as I could and finally freed her with minimal feather loss. I held her up and released my grip. She managed to raggedly fly away into the tree line. The next morning when I got to work, one of my co-workers told me I had a visitor in my area. I could not see anyone and was puzzled until I heard her chirp. I looked down and there she was. I got a bowl of water and put it alongside my desk. She hung around for an hour or so and I saw what appeared to be her flying out the door. I have not seen her or the male since but this was an emotional experience for me. I walked the entire warehouse checking for other glue traps and removed the only other one I found. I also got with our pest control person and told him if he ever put any more out he would be wearing them in an inconspicable place, Brightest Blessings with Peace adn Love-Greystar
Butterfly Tales
There are two of which I will tell. This is a night of the long knives for me so sleep will be short if any at all. The odor of hazelnut coffee drifts through the house as I type this post. Two years ago, I was the only person manning the warehouse. I spotted something on the floor and walked over to see what it was. It was a butterfly slowly opening and closing its wings. Two ladies from the front office came out to ask me a shipping question at that particular moment. They approached me as I bent down and put my hand in front of the butterfly. The butterfly climbed onto the back of my hand and continued to open and close its wings. The ladies looked at it while we talked. After about five minutes or so they turned to go back up front when one of them asked me what I was going to do with the butterfly. I told her I was going to set it outside in the sun so it could warm up. I proceeded to do just that. After about 30 seconds of being in the sun, the butterfly took off and headed for the trees. This next story took place at one of the sacred sites we were visitng. I was walking along the stream bed when a buck, a doe, and a fawn came crashing through the weeds and brush off to my left. Something drew me over to where they had just passed. I walked along their trail for about 30 feet or so and decided to head back to camp. As I turned, I spotted a butterfly flittering about an old tree on a small rise. It was as if it wanted me to come to the top of the rise. I made the trek to the top and looked at the gnarly old tree and admired the view which was spectacular. There was no trace of the butterfly which had beckoned me to the top. I offered some tobacco from a cigarette and started to leave. About 10 feet or so down from the top, I spotted something in the leaves and undergrowth. It was a small crystal pointer uncommon to this area. About 10 feet lower down the rise, I spotted another something and this time discovered a small crystal cluster. I turned to the old tree atop the rise and once again offered tobacco for the gifts I had just received. Unexpected gifts such as these are something one treasures. They occupy a special place in our library. Brightest of Blessings with peace and Love-Greystar

One hot summer day in 1999 a fly buzzed past me many times. I became annoyed and killed it, but when I did, a feeling overcame me I'll always remember. This tiny life form inside my hands was fading away, and I was responsible. As I felt the life leaving it's body, chills of great discomfort, deep sorrow and regret humbled me to stop and think. Quickly I opened my hands, sincerely apologized to it and said a prayer before sending it away. I felt no pleasure in it's demise and thought, "We shouldn't have this kind of power to destroy life so easily". From then on I vowed to do my best to send the critters back outside, I'd gentely capture them without causing harm, and tell them my intent was sincere. Can you imagine being so tiny and being lifted by a huge object, you'd be so frightened... since then I avoid taking another's life, unless it spreads disease, like cockroaches, or endangers my life, though I still apologize and pray. Until that day, I enjoyed killing bugs. When bees buzz past me I assure them I'm their friend, most times they don't sting me. I'd never attempt killing one so formidable, and should give the same respect to the less defensless beings. If I were a hunter I'd only take what I needed, and show respect for that life. I do my best to respect all life as part of my family. Maybe being nearsighted is good sometimes, it's usually hard for me to catch flying insects anyway. This tiny bug, who seems so insignificant to many people, taught me a most valuable and powerful lesson on a much deeper level than I already knew, not just the intellectual level, about myself and how we all fit into this world. I remembered this incident when speaking to a friend who, like me, has a "Native heart." She said we can learn the greatest lessons from the smallest creatures. We were in a chat program where many people take power names like buffalo, eagle, wolf, but forget the smaller animals, so I called myself a bug, in appreciation for the lesson, in respect and honor of the fly who's life was cut short by my angry hands. In memory and thanks to all the beings I've encountered, big and small, and many I know only in spirit, you've taught me many things which I'll always remember. I pray for the beings killed unnecessarily by those with angry hands, closed hearts and closed minds. Sincerely, Ariel

A big part of shamanism is learning how to communicate with animals or to recognize signs they are giving to us. We all have many stories we can share and this topic can easily exceed the "Spirit 35" post limit. If so, we will open up as many as needed. We have four black lab females here at the physical Bohemian Sanctuary. They are all from the same liter and each has their own personality and place. Our baby in size, Threepaws, is our little "shadow dog" and guardian. Her specialty is internal issues and to protect people from the "nasty" outdoor cats when they arrive or leave. Our next one up is Beauty. If someone is in need of a self-esteem boost, Beauty will crawl into their lap before they realize it. They literally receive Beauty upon them. Sheppy is our sensitive and can not tolerate disorderly chaos energy. Many people come here in crisis and she will exit stage left until they get their chaos in some semblance of order. Our last one is Tippy. If one comes in out of balance, Tippy will demand attention until they get more in alignement. Their mother, Chubby, used to give people undo mothering if they were in need of that. Unfortunately, she crossed over a year and a half ago. Our moonflower plant marks her resting place and she is still with us in spirit. Another short story I will tell is the black bird. I was headed in to work one morning and was approaching an intersection. A large black bird appeared out of nowhere in front of me and I just missed hitting it. It veered off to the left at the last minute. I stopped at the intersection stop sign and turned left, the same direction the bird had veered. Normally I would have gone straight but something said to take the alternate route. That evening I was on my way home and was taking the route I had deviated from that morning. As I rounded a curve, the road was barricaded with a sign "Bridge Out." A small bridge, crossing a creek, had literally sank a foot at one end. Coincidence? Brightest of Blessings with Peace and Love-Greystar
