Greetings,
Forty-one years ago this week, President Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 into law -- one of the most important pieces of legislation in American history. This law helped lay the groundwork for the Voting Rights Act of 1965 (VRA) which continues to be our biggest line of defense against voter discrimination.
But all that progress could be in jeopardy. Unless Congress acts soon, several key provisions will expire that help prevent discrimination against minority voters.
Urge Congress to act NOW to protect over 40 years of civil rights progress by reauthorizing the Voting Rights Act.

Urge your Senator to Act on Hate Crimes Legislation
Current federal hate crime law, passed by Congress is 1968, allows federal investigation and prosecution of hate crimes based on race, religion, and national origin. It does not include sexual orientation, gender or disability.
To remedy this, hate crimes legislation that would protect the GLBT, & disabled communities was introduced in the House of Representatives and the Senate in May 2005. The House passed the legislation on September 14th, 2005 by an overwhelming 223 to 199 bipartisan vote, taking a historic step toward giving law enforcement the tools they need to enforce and prosecute hate crimes against gay, lesbian, bisexual ,transgender & disabled Americans.

Wow...I didn't even know that attacks on people who are gay or bisexual were left out of hate crime legislation. Anyone commiting a crime against someone just because they are different from him or herself is very disturbed in my book...so we should throw the book at them! [

It is the first time that I have ever made a petition, so I hope that it was done right!
Anyway, it is a petition for Care2 to increase the default font size from 2(10pt) to 3(12pt). This simple act will make it easier for me and countless others to read EVERY post in EVERY group if that is what we desire.
I HAVE tried all of the various fixes and they do not work for me (and others)[so have I Tina...so have I!!], however to post in font3(12pt) or even 4(14pt) is easier for me. In the smaller fonts, I can get headaches, nausuea, and just not pleasant to read.
I think that if people would just take the extra second to click up to a higher font, then it would be ok. But many people don't bother to change it, period.

In order to halt the ongoing eradication of South African primate populations (the Chacma Baboon and Vervet Monkeys), new laws that protect primates from being indiscriminately hunted are urgently required;
Baboons and Vervet Monkeys after many years of being persecuted as "problem animals’ in certain provinces will now have more protection once provincial authorities redraft legislation in accordance with N.E.M.B.A – National Environmental Management Biodiversity Act 2004 - requirements. In spite of both the Vervet Monkey and Chacma baboon being listed on C.I.T.E.S Appendix 2, our indigenous primates are not monitored in South Africa and still face a slow eradication. There are less than 120 individuals left on the Cape Peninsula.
While the N.E.M.B Act hopes to bring about protection of biodiversity, the hunting laws still in existence presently allow indiscriminate killing. Landowners, their employees and family in the Western Cape may "hunt" all protected game without licence or permit subject to the season, daily bag and degree to which prohibited hunting measures are suspended (poison, bow and arrow, gin traps etc). There is NO limit to how many baboons are allowed to be shot annually. They may be hunted at night (sitting targets while sleeping in trees), with dogs, traps etc. Holders of an annual hunting licence legally do the same.
We need laws that will protect all free roaming species before it's too late.

In the past, protected species were not immune to being persecuted under the hunting laws. The hunting laws - The Hunting proclamation 2005 - does not adhere to the requirements of N.E.M.B.A – nor does it acknowledge endangered status outlined by C.I.T.E.S (Convention for International Trade in Endangered Species) in that it allows landowners, farmers, employees and families to hunt species in a manner that does not protect them in the interests of bio-diversity and continues to place our wildlife and their habitats at severe risk. Farmers are given the right to extreminate species at the expense of environmental conservation. For example, primate populations and troop structures appear to have been severely damaged in the Western Cape as a result of the hunting proclamation. Populations of species like the Caracal and Bushpig who are nocturnal, rarely seen by humans and even less understood, continue to be persecuted relentlessly. This hunting proclamation has focussed on the hunting of free roaming wildlife and actively promotes the extermination of species regarded by farmers as “problems”. (Some mammal examples of species considered to be a problem to farmers are the Vervet Monkey, Bushpig, Baboon, Porcupine, Caracal, Jackal and Leopard). These populations have not been monitored and remain unknown although some may be heading towards extinction.
It is of utmost importance to the health and protection of biodiversity that key players with hands-on experience in dealing with our primate populations - and other species formerly targeted by landowners - are consulted in this process of planning for Biodiversity and redrafting of Conservation Laws. Once the new laws are in practice, when permits are required to deal with public issues, these representatives should be consulted about the permit process. Representatives from reputable rehabilitation centres - experienced environmentalists who have dealt with declining primate populations, primate behaviour, destroyed troops structures and misconceptions that have accentuated the public's attitude towards those species who co-exist alongside human suburbs and agricultural areas need to be consulted on this important process. With decades of direct experience in this field these organisations and individuals have much to offer. Workshops between Nature Conservation authorities and these representatives are necesssary to this process in order to achieve the best results in accordance with N.E.M.B.A requirements.
With hundreds of primates a year being orphaned after farmers have shot their mothers, being injured on our roads, being poisoned, electrocuted and captured for research or muthi, our primate rehabilitation centres are experiencing increasing difficulty. There are too few habitats to release along with other bureaucratic obstacles; there is a backload of primates held in these centres without much hope for freedom in the near future unless the laws change to pAltho

Although this petition specifically aims to help our primates - who are increasingly adapting to sharing their habitats with people - it's ultimate goal is to seek protection for all species perceived to be a 'problem’ who have been tainted by human intervention due to the ongoing encroachment of human development on their territories.
Addressed to the D.E.A.T. and C.N.C, we are asking for all interested parties to be invited to engage in workshops while provincial legislation is redrafted to meet with N.E.M.B.A requirements.

Indonesia plans to cut a 2,000 kilometer long, five kilometer
wide swathe through one of the world's largest remaining areas
of pristine rainforest to create a massive oil palm plantation.
The project would destroy nearly two million hectares of ancient
rainforest in Kalimantan, traversing almost the entire border
with Malaysia, and slicing through three national parks. These
remote rainforests on the island of Borneo are home to countless
species of rare birds, plants and mammals including the largest
remaining wild orangutan population. This Chinese-funded
"agricultural development" is almost certainly a thinly veiled
ruse to access timber. Indonesia has huge land areas of
abandoned, unproductive palm oil plantations and degraded forest
areas that would be suitable for oil palm development. Palm oil
plantations - which completely clear the rainforests and are
biologically depauperate - are the number one enemy of
orangutans. Orangutans need vast areas of interconnected forest
to survive, and this ill-conceived project would speed up their
extinction. The business as usual palm oil trade is expected to
cause the extinction of the orangutan within 12 years. Let the
Minister of Agriculture know he must cancel the Kalimantan
project, and that new oil palm plantations should be built only
in previously cleared and unused areas. Note your protest emails

first baby seal was killed for her fur on Canadian ice. It was heartbreaking to
watch, but bearing witness to this cruelty -- and exposing it to the world -- is
essential if we are finally to end this slaughter.
I am now in Canada,
leading a skilled team of experts from The Humane Society of United States to
the ice floes in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. We are here once again to document
the horrifying abuses inflicted by sealers, abuses that violate Canada's own
laws.

One of Turkeys most important heritage sites is the Roman Spa of Allianoi. Unfortunately a new dam is going to flood the entire site which will wreck it. A change to the dam design would stop this.

Friends I like to inform you of the posting of my 2nd petition on the web. I respectfully ask all of you to join me in petitioning the House of Representatives to order an immediate inquiry on a National level, to investigate every State, Children Services Administrations.
After careful consideration I thought that it would be selfish of me to only fight for my niece Geneva. There are so many horror stories out there, and many families don’t have a voice to represent them; or anyone standing in their corner just to say I care.
I used my family story in this petition to alert our representatives throughout this great country of ours to show how ruthless this administration can be along with the family court institution. A primary cause of homelessness in the Charlotte - Mecklenburg area is the shortage in the supply of affordable homes. A worker earning minimum wage no longer has sufficient income to afford a safe and decent apartment. And with regional fair market rents averaging more than $650 a month for a two-bedroom apartment, many working families are struggling to find homes within financial reach. With your help, we can ask the Mayor to help.

Why not invest this kind of money into day shelters for the homeless. You could provide lifeskills classes to these people. Finally people would be able to get back on their feet and contribute back to society. Do you really believe that people who are homeless chose to be this way? It happens because life happens, not because this is the way they choose to live. Please think about the future of Charlotte and the surrounding areas. Think about the future of our youth. My brother, Larry Neal, was deliberately held under secret arrest for 18 days in 2003, while police repeatedly and falsely denied having this 54-year-old heart patient who was a lifelong mental patient. See http://wrongfuldeathoflarryneal.com. Unfortunately, Larry suffered a fatal heart attack and died, while his social worker and family searched everywhere for him. At least, we now know why police did not help to search for this troublesome mental patient, who had suffered repeated arrests for over 20 years for disturbing the peace, vagrancy, and the like. Larry’s death was presumably caused by deprivation of his prescription heart drugs, although his family does not know for sure. We have been denied any investigation and jail records regarding Larry’s death for 4.5 years! Mine is the only American family in the 21st Century to have a member secretly arrested and returned to his family a corpse with no excuse, explanation, apology, arrest records, inquest, and denied an investigation.
The attorneys hired to represent Larry’s family after his death never filed suit, and we discovered later that the managing partner of the law firm was in a senior position on the county commission that owned and operated the jail where Larry was euthanized. Unrighteousness and injustice are rampant in the world, and human rights are often not valued or protected, particularly for indigent, disabled persons.
Since Larry's death, I have become an advocate for the incarcerated mentally ill in America. As my family unsuccessfully tried to get access to records and we were denied an investigation regarding Larry's euthanasia, I researched and discovered the dire condition of our mentally ill citizens in America, especially the indigent. Sadly, prisons have replaced hospitals and outpatient treatment for 1.25 million mentally ill Americans. Not long ago, most of these prisoners would have been either hospitalized or receiving psychiatric treatment in their communities. Many never even understood their Miranda rights or their criminal charges. For safety, many of them suffer solitary confinement, held naked in cold jail cells to prevent self-inflicted harm. Each year, mental patients across America die in restraint chairs or are electrocuted by Taser guns during arrests.
I believe that many people in elected office as well as in our general population care about the least of these, His brethren, as I do. Please sign our petition for an investigation into Larry's death and pass it on to your friends. The acutely mentally ill usually do not vote. Please help me to prove to our nation's elected officials that voters care about the treatment of these disabled persons. Please show that you believe these people matter as much as Michael Vick's dogs. Those dogs deserved to live. Please agree with me that the deaths of disabled citizens deserve investigation, too.
